I run until my legs give out, stumbling over roots and fallen branches, my dress catching on thorns. The forest is thick here, ancient trees blocking most of the sky, but not enough.
Not nearly enough.
The first true rays of sunlight break through the canopy ahead of me, illuminating a small clearing in gold and amber. Beautiful. Deadly.
I freeze.
There's nowhere left to run. The sun is rising too fast, spreading through the trees like liquid fire. My skin already feels tight, sensitive, that warning tingle that comes before burning.
In minutes, maybe less, I'll be ash.
I close my eyes, because I don't want to see it. Don't want to watch my own skin blister and char. Don't want to know the exact moment when—
Heavy fabric falls over me, blocking out the light completely.
I gasp, my eyes flying open to darkness. A cloak—thick, heavy, smelling of leather and night air and something that makes every nerve in my body come alive—wraps around me completely.
Strong hands adjust it, making sure every inch of me is covered. "Don't move."
The voice is male, deep, carrying an authority that resonates in my bones. Not a command exactly, but close. Something that makes my body want to obey before my mind can catch up.
"Who…" I start, but he cuts me off.
"Not now. We need to move."
One arm wraps around me—the cloak between us, keeping me sheltered—and then we're moving. I can't see anything through the thick fabric, but I'm acutely aware of him.
The solid warmth at my back. The easy strength in how he carries my weight. The way he moves through the forest like he knows every root and stone by heart.
The air grows cooler. The sense of immediate danger fades. After what feels like an eternity, he stops.
"We're here. Stay covered."
I hear fabric rustling, stakes being driven into ground, the efficient sounds of someone who's done this many times before. Then his hands find me again through the cloak, guiding me forward.
"Now. Quickly."
I stumble into deeper darkness—the interior of a tent. The cloak is carefully removed, and I blink, trying to adjust.
And then I saw him properly for the first time.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair pulled back from a face that's all sharp angles and controlled power. He moves with a predator's grace toward the supplies, though there's a hitch in his left leg—subtle but unmistakable. An old injury, long healed but never quite forgotten.
‘Dangerous,’ my instincts whisper. ‘This man is dangerous.’
But it's his eyes that steal my breath.
Silver. Not gray, not pale blue—true silver. Like molten moonlight, luminous even in the tent's dimness. The color is so unusual, so impossibly striking, that for a moment I forget everything.
Forget to be afraid. Forget that I'm bleeding and hunted and broken.
I've never seen a vampire with silver eyes. Never even heard of it. The color is wrong, too bright, too alive… Magic.
That's what it looks like. Pure magic made flesh.
"You're staring," he says, and there's the faintest hint of amusement in his voice.
Heat floods my cheeks. "Who are you?"
"Sebastian Delmare." Those silver eyes pin me in place. "Elder Council Enforcer."
Elder Council Enforcer. The words mean nothing to me, though the way he says them suggests they should. What even is that position?
"You need to bind that wound. The silver is still in your system—I can smell it."
I look down at my wrist. Blood still seeping through makeshift bandaging. "How did you know I was—"
"Sit."
It's not a suggestion. So I sat.
He kneels in front of me with that slight hitch in his movement, reaching for my wrist. The moment his fingers touch my skin, even that clinical, professional touch… something jolts through me. Electric. Alive.
His eyes flick to mine, and I see it—he felt it too.
For a heartbeat, neither of us moves. Then he looks down, focusing on unwrapping the crude bandaging.
"You were in the forest at dawn," I say, needing to fill the charged silence. "Why?"
"My business."
"So you just happened to be there?"
"I was there. That's all you need to know."
He wraps fresh bandages with practiced efficiency and I could feel the frustration bubbles up.
"You saved my life. I think I deserve—"
"You don't deserve anything from me." His silver eyes lift to mine, direct and uncompromising. "I chose to help. That's all you need to know."
I swallowed hard as he returned my own words. Let’s try something different then.
"Those eyes. Are you really…" I hesitate. "A vampire?"
"Yes."
"But I've never seen—"
"No, you haven't." He ties off the bandage. "And you won't again."
Warning and promise, all at once.
"I'm heading to Elder's castle when the clouds cover the sky," Sebastian says, standing. "Should be a few hours."
He's not asking. Not inviting. Just stating the fact.
My mind races through options as I watch him check supplies, that slight limp evident as he moves.
I can't go back to House Ravencrest—they literally cast me out to die. My parents' estate is too far, and I'm too weak for that journey. I have nothing but this blood-stained dress and a body barely holding together.
This dangerous stranger is my only option.
"I'm coming with you," I announce.
He pauses, glances back. "Are you?"
"Yes. Because I won't survive on my own. Because you won't escort me anywhere else. Because I don't have a choice."
"No," he agrees quietly. "You don't."
Something flickers across his face—respect, maybe.
"Rest," Sebastian says. "I'll wake you when it's time."
The moment I close my eyes, darkness swallows me whole.
When I surface again, I'm on horseback. Sebastian's arms are around me, hands steady at my waist. The rocking motion, the solid warmth at my back, the scent of leather and night air—
"Easy," his voice says near my ear. "We're almost there."
The sun is setting. We're passing through massive gates carved with shifting symbols. Beyond them, a castle rises against twilight—old, powerful, nothing like House Ravencrest's political grandeur.
"The Nyx estate," Sebastian says. “Vampire King’s grounds.” he supplies helpfully.
Guards in silver and black line the courtyard. Servants pause their work. Everyone watches—not Sebastian, but me.
Sebastian dismounts, that slight hitch in his movement visible again, then helps me down. My legs barely hold. He keeps one hand at my elbow.
"This way."
Through corridors of shadow and starlight. Everything is beautiful and ancient. We stop before massive doors flanked by guards who simply nod and push them open, as if they were waiting.
The throne room beyond steals my breath. Vaulted ceilings disappearing into darkness. Pillars carved with unreadable script. And at the far end, on a throne of black stone—
High Elder Silas Nyx. King of the Vampires.
He's powerful in a way that makes every other of our kind I've met seem lesser. Centuries of power radiating from him, but it's his eyes that hold me—dark and knowing and fixed on me with devastating focus.
Sebastian walks forward and I follow. We stop before the throne and he drops to one knee as I fall beside him in curtsy.
High Elder Silas rises, studying my face like he's searching for something specific. Then his expression cracks—pain and joy and relief tangled together.
The throne room falls silent.
"Welcome back," he says, his voice powerful but trembling slightly. "My dear daughter."
