His Discarded Queen

Chapter 23

Ch. 23 / 30 Mar 17, 2026

[Tessa's POV]

"Who are you?"

The words come out thick, unfamiliar in my own mouth. My tongue feels heavy. Everything feels heavy.

Two faces hover above me. One with silver eyes, sharp and worried. The other with dark eyes that I should know. Should recognize.

"Tessa." The silver-eyed one leans closer. "It's Sebastian. Do you know where you are?"

Sebastian. The name clicks into place like a key turning. Sebastian. Enforcer. House Nyx. Training. The Challenge—

"The Challenge," I rasp, and my throat burns. "I was—there were so many of them. They were saying—"

Memory crashes back. The throne room. The mocking. The way their words cut deeper than any blade. The power exploding out of me until there was nothing left.

"Easy." The dark-eyed one—Soren, my mind supplies—reaches for my hand. "You're safe. You're in your chambers. You've been unconscious for a day."

A day. I've lost an entire day.

I blink, trying to clear the fog from my vision. The room comes into sharper focus. My chambers. My bed. Sebastian and Soren on either side of me, both looking like they haven't slept.

"What happened to me?" I manage.

"You drained yourself completely," Sebastian says, and there's something raw in his voice. "The power output—it knocked down everyone in the throne room. You passed out before you hit the ground."

"I caught you," he adds quietly. "Before you fell."

The fog is clearing now, thoughts becoming sharper. I remember the explosion of power. Remember feeling it pour out of me like water through broken glass. Remember the terror of not being able to stop it.

"Did I hurt anyone?" The question comes out small, afraid.

"No." Soren squeezes my hand. "You knocked them down, but no one was seriously injured. Just bruised egos and a few minor cuts."

I try to sit up, and both of them immediately move to help. Hands under my elbows, supporting me until I'm upright against the pillows. The movement makes my head spin, but I force myself to stay conscious. To stay present.

"You need sustenance," Sebastian says, looking around for what to do. “You haven't eaten in—"

"I'm fine," I interrupt, but my voice cracks on the words. "I just need—I need to know—" I take a big breath in. "Did I pass?" The words come out broken. "The Challenge. Did I—was it enough?"

Soren's hand comes up to cup my face, and I'm too tired to pull away. Too desperate for comfort to care that I probably shouldn't let him touch me like this.

"You didn't fail," he says softly. "You were magnificent. Terrifying and powerful and everything they feared you'd be."

The words break something open in my chest. Relief so profound it hurts.

"You passed," Sebastian confirms. "Silas is finalizing the acknowledgment now. You're officially the heir to House Nyx."

I should feel triumphant. Should feel vindicated. Instead, I just feel exhausted and hollow and like I might shatter if anyone touches me wrong.

Soren must see it in my face because he moves closer, carefully pulling me into his arms. I should resist. Should remember all the reasons I can't let him close again.

But I'm so tired. So wrung out. And his arms are familiar in a way that has nothing to do with love and everything to do with history and comfort and the memory of a time when this felt safe.

I let myself lean into him. Let him hold me while I shake with silent tears I didn't realize I was crying.

His lips press against my forehead. Gentle. Careful. Like I'm something precious that might break.

"I'm sorry," he murmurs against my hair. "For everything. For my testimony making it harder. For every moment I failed you. I'm so sorry."

I don't answer.

When I finally pull back, Sebastian is still there. Still watching. But there's no jealousy in his expression. No anger or possessiveness. Just understanding. Recognition that Soren's worry is genuine, even if everything else between us is complicated.

Something passes between them—a look I can't quite interpret. Not friendship. Not quite truce. But maybe the beginning of understanding that they both want the same thing: for me to be okay.

The door opens, and The King enters. His face lights up when he sees me awake, but there's worry underneath the relief.

"Tessa." He's at my bedside in three strides. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I got trampled by a herd of something large and angry," I admit.

A smile flickers across his face, but it doesn't reach his eyes. "Accurate description of the nobility, actually."

He checks me over with a father's careful attention—taking my pulse, looking into my eyes, asking questions about pain and dizziness and whether I can feel my extremities.

"You passed," he says finally. "Officially. Unquestionably. No one can challenge your legitimacy now. You're acknowledged as my heir and a full member of the Elder Council."

"But?" I ask, because I can hear it in his voice.

Silas's expression darkens. "But the Challenge itself is a problem. It shouldn't have happened. The fact that they forced it—that they pushed you to the breaking point in front of witnesses—that's a bad sign."

"What kind of bad sign?" Soren asks, and there's an edge in his voice.

"The kind that means they're not done," Silas says grimly. "Houses Delacroix, Corvus, Blackwood—they all bet on you failing. They orchestrated that psychological warfare specifically to break you. And when you didn't break, when you proved your power instead—"

"They lost," Sebastian finishes quietly. "Publicly. Humiliatingly."

"Exactly." Silas's jaw tightens. "And vampires don't handle humiliation well. Especially not the old houses with ancient grudges and deep pockets."

A chill runs down my spine. "You think they'll retaliate."

"I know they will." Silas looks at each of us in turn. "The question isn't if, it's when and how. They can't challenge your legitimacy again—you proved that beyond doubt. But there are other ways to undermine House Nyx. Other ways to hurt you."

"Physical retaliation," Sebastian says flatly. "Assassination attempts."

The exhaustion I felt moments ago transforms into something colder. Sharper.

"So I passed the Challenge, but the real fight is just beginning," I say.

"Yes." Silas turns back to face me, and there's pride in his expression despite the worry. "But you're not facing it alone. You have House Nyx behind you. Sebastian's protection. Your own considerable power." His eyes flick to Soren. "And apparently some unexpected allies."

Soren straightens. "House Ravencrest stands with House Nyx. Publicly. Whatever comes."

"That will cost you," Sebastian observes.

"I know." Soren's voice is steady. "I don't care."

Silas nods, satisfied. "Good. Now rest, Tessa. Actually rest. We'll handle the aftermath. When you're ready, we'll start planning our next moves."

He leaves, taking the weight of leadership with him. But the heaviness in the room remains.

I passed the Challenge. I'm acknowledged. I'm powerful.

And I've never been in more danger.
