[Tessa's POV]
The ceremonial robes weigh exactly as much as I feared.
Each step down the silver path feels like moving through water. The ancient words flow from my lips in a language that tastes of blood and starlight, and I don't stumble once. At each marker, power slams into me—lightning and drowning, just like Silas promised—but I absorb it. Channel it. Let it remake me into something stronger.
The assembled nobility watches in silence. Hundreds of vampires bearing witness to a coronation that will reshape everything they know.
I reach the dais. Silas stands waiting, crown in hand. But the High Priestess steps forward first, her ancient eyes assessing me with inhuman intensity.
"The final rite," she announces, her voice carrying through the chamber. "The Witness. The heir must choose one to stand with her, to anchor her to this world as she accepts the full weight of House Nyx's power."
This is it. The moment I've been dreading.
"Choose," the High Priestess commands.
I look at Sebastian. Silver eyes steady, unwavering. He'd stand with me through anything. Has stood with me through everything.
Then at Soren. Dark eyes desperate, pleading. He'd die for me. Already almost did.
My throat closes. I can't do this. Can't choose one and destroy the other. Can't break either of them when they've both—
"I—" The word comes out broken. "I can't."
Whispers ripple through the crowd. Shock. Confusion. This isn't how coronations work. You don't refuse the Witness.
The High Priestess's expression doesn't change. "You must choose, Lady Tessa. The rite cannot be completed without—"
"I can't." My hands are shaking. The power I've absorbed thrums under my skin, demanding release, demanding completion. "I won't choose. Not like this."
Silas steps forward, concern flickering across his face. "Tessa—"
"There is... an alternative." The High Priestess's voice cuts through the rising chaos. She turns to face the assembled court. "Ancient texts speak of it. For a Queen born of prophecy, for one who will reshape our world—two Witnesses instead of one."
Silence. Absolute, devastating silence.
"It has never been done," she continues. "But it is not forbidden. The magic allows it, for those rare few powerful enough to sustain the bond with two souls instead of one."
My heart pounds. Two witnesses. Both of them.
"This is unprecedented," someone calls from the crowd.
"So is she." The High Priestess looks at me. "Will you claim your right? Will you choose both?"
I don't hesitate. "Yes."
The word echoes. Sebastian and Soren both move toward the dais simultaneously, and the symbolism isn't lost on anyone. The Queen of prophecy, bound to two men. The Enforcer and the noble lord. Power and politics intertwined.
They flank me. Sebastian on my right, Soren on my left. When their hands touch mine, power explodes.
Not painful. Transcendent.
I feel them—their strength, their determination, their complicated feelings about each other and about me. The magic binds us together in ways that make the blood bond seem like a children's game. This is soul-deep. Permanent.
"Witnesses accepted," the High Priestess declares. "Let the crowning commence."
Silas lifts the crown—ancient silver worked with symbols that hurt to look at directly. When he places it on my head, the weight is immense. But I don't buckle. Don't falter.
I stand straight, flanked by two men who would die for me, wearing the crown of House Nyx, and I feel powerful.
"Behold," Silas's voice rings with pride and something that might be tears. "Tessa Nyx, heir to House Nyx, Queen of the Blood Eclipse, Destroyer and Rebuilder. Rise and be recognized."
The court kneels. Every vampire in that chamber—nobles and servants, allies and enemies—drops to one knee.
I am Queen.
The celebration begins. Wine flows, vampires mingle, political alliances shift and reform around this new reality. I should be present for all of it, should be navigating the social waters, but I'm exhausted and overwhelmed and the crown feels heavier with each passing moment.
Then I notice. Sebastian and Soren are both gone.
I scan the crowd. Neither of them anywhere. Unease prickles down my spine.
The doors burst open.
Both men return, dragging someone between them. Lord Delacroix. His perfect composure is shattered—face bruised, clothes torn, eyes wild with fear.
The celebration stops. Every head turns.
Sebastian and Soren throw Delacroix to the floor before the dais. He lands hard, gasping.
"My Queen." Sebastian's voice carries absolute authority. "We present evidence of treason."
Soren produces documents, spreading them across the floor. "Lord Delacroix orchestrated the smear campaign against you. Hired the assassin. Worked with Houses Corvus and Blackwood to undermine your legitimacy."
"Lies!" Delacroix scrambles to his knees. "This is a conspiracy—"
"Your own correspondence." Soren drops another stack of papers. "Signed. Sealed. Confessing everything."
The court erupts. Shouts of outrage, demands for justice, the carefully maintained peace dissolving into chaos.
But I don't hear any of it.
I'm staring at Delacroix. This vampire who tried to destroy me. Who hired someone to kill me. Who would have succeeded if Soren hadn't taken that arrow.
Cold fury crystallizes in my chest.
"Silence." My voice cuts through the noise like a blade.
Instant quiet. The power of the crown, of the binding, of everything I've become—it all resonates in that single word.
I rise from my throne. Descend the steps slowly, each movement deliberate. The crown weighs heavy on my head, but I wear it like I was born to it.
Delacroix shrinks back. "Your Majesty, please—I can explain—"
"Explain what?" I stop before him. Look down at this pathetic creature who thought he could kill a Queen. "Explain how you tried to murder me? How you spread lies? How you conspired with other houses to undermine House Nyx?"
"I was protecting vampire society—"
"You were protecting yourself." My voice is ice. "From change. From progress. From a Queen who threatens your comfortable position."
He opens his mouth. Closes it. There's no defense. No excuse that will save him.
"As my first act as Queen," I say, and every vampire in this room leans forward to hear, "I pass judgment. Lord Delacroix, you are found guilty of treason against the Crown. Of attempted assassination. Of conspiracy to overthrow House Nyx."
His face goes white. "Mercy—"
"The sentence is exposure." The words come out cold. Final. "At sunrise, you will be taken to the eastern courtyard. You will be bound. And you will face the sun."
Horror ripples through the court. Execution by sunlight—one of the most brutal deaths a vampire can face. Slow. Painful. Absolute.
"No—" Delacroix's voice breaks. "Please—"
"Guards." I don't look at him. Can't look at him without seeing Soren falling, blood spreading, nearly dying because of this vampire's ambition. "Take him away."
They drag him out, his screams echoing. Begging. Pleading.
I feel nothing.
When the doors close, silence falls again. But this time it's different. This time it's not shock—it's fear.
Good.
I turn back to the assembled court. To the vampires who watched me get crowned, who saw me choose two Witnesses, who just watched me order a lord's execution without hesitation.
"Let this be understood," I say, and my voice carries to every corner of the chamber. "I am not the powerless foundling you dismissed. I am not the weak vampire you mocked. I am Tessa Nyx, Queen of the Blood Eclipse. And anyone who threatens me, threatens House Nyx, threatens those I've claimed—" My eyes find Sebastian, then Soren. "They will face the sun."
No one speaks. No one moves.
They're terrified.
Perfect.
"The celebration continues," I say, ascending back to my throne.
I sink into my throne, crown heavy, power thrumming through my veins, flanked by two men who look at me with something between awe and desire.
Tomorrow, Delacroix burns.
Tonight, I'm Queen.
And everyone knows exactly what that means.
