[Tessa's POV]
I enter the throne room with my spine straight and my chin high, wearing midnight blue silk that flows like water with each step. Every eye turns to me. Hundreds of them. Vampires from every major house, gathered to witness whether I'm worthy of the Nyx name.
Or to watch me fail spectacularly.
Silas sits on his throne, regal and ancient and proud. His eyes meet mine across the distance, and I see the confidence there. The belief. Sebastian stands at his right hand, silver eyes carefully neutral, and my heart clenches at the memory. Of him catching me with Soren. Of the way he looked at me—or rather, didn't look at me—when he dismissed me.
I can't think about that now. Can't let it distract me.
Soren is in the crowd, positioned near the front where witnesses are traditionally placed. His face is pale but determined. Ready to testify when called.
"Tessa of House Nyx," Lord Delacroix's voice rings out from the opposing section. "You stand before this assembly to prove your claim to Elder Silas's bloodline. Do you accept the terms of the Challenge?"
"I do," I say, and my voice carries. Steady. Strong.
"Then let us begin with testimony." He gestures toward Soren. "Lord Soren Ravencrest. You were blood-bonded to the challenger. Step forward and testify to her legitimacy."
Soren moves into the center of the room, and I watch every vampire track his movement. Judging. Calculating.
"I was married to Tessa for years," he begins, his voice formal. "During that time, I witnessed—"
"A marriage you ended publicly," a female voice cuts through. Sharp and mocking. "How convenient that you now testify in her favor."
"I witnessed her resilience," Soren continues, ignoring her. "Her intelligence. Her ability to survive in a hostile environment despite—"
"Despite being powerless?" someone calls out. Laughter follows.
"Despite being deliberately kept in ignorance of her true heritage," Soren's voice hardens. "I testify that she is legitimate. That her bloodline is—"
"You cast her aside," Delacroix interrupts smoothly. "Announced your intention to take a second wife in front of the entire nobility. Performed the blood-binding ceremony with another woman. And now you expect us to trust your word about her worth?"
Soren's jaw clenches. "My failures as a husband don't change the truth of her bloodline—"
"Your failures prove you didn't see anything worth keeping," another voice adds. "Three years, and you found her so worthless you replaced her. That's your testimony, Lord Ravencrest. That she wasn't enough."
The words hit like physical blows. I watch Soren's face flush with anger, watch him try to continue, but the damage is done. His testimony—meant to help—has become another weapon against me.
"Enough," Delacroix says, waving dismissively. "We've heard sufficient testimony. Let us move to the actual test." His smile is sharp. "Combat and Influence. The challenger must best a worthy opponent and command their will."
"I suggest Lord Marcus of House Corvus," someone calls out. "Surely no one can claim he has allegiance to House Nyx."
A vampire steps forward from the crowd—tall, scarred, with the cold eyes of someone who's survived centuries through violence. House Corvus. Neutral territory. No connection to Silas.
"An excellent choice," Delacroix agrees. "No one can claim bias here. If she defeats Marcus and commands his will, it will be through her own power. Nothing more."
Marcus draws his blade, and the crowd forms a circle around us. Eager for blood. For entertainment. For me to fail.
We begin.
He's fast. Brutal. Every strike designed to injure, not just defeat. This isn't a test—it's a punishment. A message that even if I'm legitimate, I'm not welcome here.
His blade catches my shoulder. Blood wells, and the crowd murmurs approval.
I defend. Block. Try to find an opening while reaching for his consciousness with my Influence. But he's guarded. Experienced. Centuries of mental defenses that I have to break through.
"She's struggling," a voice carries. "Against a mid-tier vampire from a minor house."
"Pathetic," another agrees. "If she can't even handle Marcus, how is she supposed to lead?"
The mocking continues, a constant chorus designed to break my concentration. To make this harder.
Marcus lunges. I dodge and finally find it—the thread of his consciousness. The weak point in his defenses where doubt lives.
I pull.
Stop.
The command slams into him with everything I have. Will over will. Power against resistance.
His eyes go unfocused. Glossy. His blade lowers.
He stops. Completely. Utterly under my control.
The throne room goes silent.
"She did it," someone breathes.
For a moment—just a moment—I think I've won. Think I've proven myself.
Then a laugh rings out. "She Influenced Marcus. How impressive. A vampire barely two centuries old. Surely that proves she's worthy of Elder status."
"My servants show more resistance," another voice adds, dripping with contempt.
"Years of marriage and she couldn't influence her own husband's affection," someone else says. "But yes, let's applaud her ability to control a nobody from House Corvus."
"Is this really what House Nyx has come to?" Delacroix's voice is smooth. Poisonous. "Claiming a foundling who can barely manage basic Influence as heir to the most powerful bloodline in existence?"
"She failed at being a wife," somebody continues. "Failed at basic vampire society. And now she thinks she can lead us?"
"The Severance nearly killed them both," another adds. "Proof she can't even end a marriage competently."
"Damaged—"
"Broken—"
"Worthless—"
"A humiliation to the Nyx name—"
The words pile on, each one a knife twisting deeper. Marcus still stands frozen under my Influence, proof I passed the test, but it doesn't matter. Nothing matters except the voices telling me what I've always feared was true.
I completed the Challenge. I did everything they asked.
And they still see me as nothing.
My hands shake. The Influence on Marcus slips, and he staggers backward, released. Free.
"She can't even maintain it," someone observes. "Weak."
"Perhaps we should just acknowledge her and be done with this farce," Delacroix says. "Let her have her title. It's not as if she'll ever actually be able to wield power with any competence."
"At least Lord Soren had the sense to cast her aside before she could embarrass him further."
The words keep coming. Keep cutting. Keep reminding me of every failure, every moment of weakness, every time I wasn't enough.
I'm nothing. I've always been nothing.
Something breaks.
Power explodes outward. Not controlled. Not focused. Just raw, ancient magic responding to emotional devastation. It slams into everyone—Delacroix, Soren, Marcus, every vampire in that throne room—knocking them backward like they weigh nothing.
The room shakes. Stone cracks beneath my feet. Ancient pillars tremble.
I hear screaming. Chaos. But I can't see any of it. Can't process anything beyond the power still pouring out of me, draining every reserve I have until there's nothing left but emptiness.
My knees buckle. The world tilts.
I'm falling.
The last thing I see before darkness takes me is Sebastian. Fighting through the crowd, running toward me despite everything. His face twisted with something that looks like panic.
His arms catch me before I hit the ground.
Then nothing.
