Stacey’s POV
I didn’t do sentimental. Not really. But when I heard Brent had been named team captain, something about it made me pause. I guess I’d seen how hard he’d been working lately, throwing himself into basketball like it was the only thing keeping him steady.
It wasn’t just about the game for him—it was about proving himself. And as much as I loved teasing him about his stubbornness, I knew this meant something to him. So here I was, setting up a tiny surprise for someone who’d probably laugh at me for it.
I waited for him at the diner we’d been to a couple of times before, a cozy spot just off campus. Nothing fancy, but it had good food and an atmosphere that didn’t scream date night, which made it perfect.
When Brent walked in, his hair damp and his gym bag slung over one shoulder, he spotted me immediately.
“What’s this?” he asked, grinning as he approached the booth.
“Sit down,” I said, sliding a cupcake toward him. A single candle flickered on top of it, its flame dancing in the low light.
Brent’s grin widened as he set his bag down and took a seat. “I didn’t think you’d care about something like this,” he said, his tone teasing as he leaned on the table.
I smirked, leaning back against the booth. “I don’t. But I care about you.”
“That’s the best thing I’ve heard all day,” he said, leaning closer.
His eyes held mine for a moment, and I could feel my smirk faltering under his gaze. He had this way of looking at me—like he saw past all the armor I put up, past the sarcasm and sharp comments.
“Make a wish,” I said quickly, breaking the moment as I nodded toward the candle.
Brent chuckled but didn’t look away. “Pretty sure I’ve already got what I want.”
I rolled my eyes, though my cheeks warmed despite myself. “Just blow out the damn candle before it drips all over the frosting.”
He did, his smile lingering as the flame disappeared. “Thanks, Stace,” he said quietly.
“Don’t make a big deal out of it,” I replied, stealing the cupcake back and taking a bite before he could stop me.
Brent laughed, shaking his head. “You’re unbelievable.”
“And you’re lucky,” I said through a mouthful of frosting.
