Behind the Lies: I Was Always His

Chapter 134

Ch. 134 / 150 Apr 28, 2026

POV: Rosalind

Daniel came home early and found me packing a small overnight bag without telling him.

I heard his car in the driveway while I was folding a change of clothes. Not the timing I'd planned. I'd meant to be gone before he returned, leaving a note instead of having this conversation face-to-face. But the universe had other ideas.

His footsteps on the stairs. The bedroom door opening. Then silence as he processed what he was seeing—his wife packing a bag in the middle of the afternoon with the careful efficiency of someone who'd planned this in advance.

"Where are you going?" His voice was controlled. Careful.

"Out." I didn't stop packing. Toothbrush. Phone charger. The basics.

"Out where?"

"Somewhere else. For a few nights."

"Why?"

"Because I need space." I zipped the bag. Turned to face him. "Not explanation. Not permission. Just space."

Daniel stepped into the room. Not aggressive. Just... present. Filling the doorway with his presence and the weight of twenty-two years of decisions we'd both made that led to this moment.

"You didn't tell me you were leaving."

"I didn't think I needed to report my movements."

"That's not what this is about." He moved closer. Hands in his pockets. The posture of someone forcing himself to appear calm. "Where are you going, Rosalind?"

"Somewhere that isn't here."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting." I picked up the bag. "I'll be back in a few days. Maybe a week. I haven't decided."

"This is about trust."

"No. This is about obedience." I set the bag down. Faced him properly. "You want me to stay where you can see me. To follow patterns you've established. To be predictable so you can manage variables. That's not trust. That's control."

"It's safety." His jaw tightened. "You're safer where I can see you."

"Am I?" I stepped closer. Close enough that we were nearly touching. Close enough that our foreheads almost met. "Because from where I'm standing, visibility hasn't kept us safe so far. Marcus walked into my winery during business hours. Someone followed Luca. Your past is showing up in present tense and you're still pretending that if you just control enough details, everything will work out."

"I'm trying to protect you."

"You're trying to manage me. There's a difference." My voice was quiet but firm. "And I'm done being managed."

Daniel's hands came out of his pockets. Found my arms. Not rough. Not gentle. Just... holding. Like he was trying to anchor both of us to the moment before I walked out.

"The man from the winery," he said quietly. "Marcus. He's connected to a failed deal from years ago. One that was never supposed to reach family. Never supposed to involve anyone outside the business."

"What kind of deal?"

"The kind that required signatures on documents that shouldn't exist. That moved money through channels that couldn't be traced. That protected people who couldn't be protected through legal means."

"Did it involve violence?"

Daniel's hands tightened on my arms. His eyes held mine. And he said nothing.

The silence answered everything.

"Daniel—"

"I didn't know. Not at the time. I thought I was facilitating asset protection. Offshore accounts. Legal gray areas." His voice cracked slightly. "By the time I understood what the money was actually funding, I was already complicit. Already a witness. Already someone who could testify about connections they needed buried."

"So you buried them."

"I tried to. Closed the accounts. Ended the partnerships. Created distance." His forehead touched mine. "But witnesses don't disappear just because you stop looking at them. They wait. And now they're back because they need me to stay silent about things I saw twenty years ago."

I pulled back enough to see his face. "And if you don't stay silent?"

"Then everyone I care about becomes leverage. You. Luca. The winery. My reputation. Everything I've built." He cupped my face between his hands. "So yes, I'm trying to control details. Because details are all I have left to control."

We stood like that for a long moment. Two people who'd built a life together and were watching it compress under pressure neither of us knew how to relieve.

Then Daniel kissed me. Pulled me against him. Led me to the bed with the kind of deliberate intention that felt less like passion and more like desperation.

The sex was slower but strained. Daniel held me too tightly—hands gripping, fingers pressing into skin hard enough to leave marks. Like he was trying to imprint the shape of me into his memory. Like he knew this might be one of the last times and was trying to make it count.

Afterward, we lay tangled in sheets, his arm around me, my head on his chest. His heart beat steady against my ear. But his breathing was wrong. Too controlled. Too measured. The breathing of someone forcing calm over panic.

"Don't go," he said quietly.

"I have to."

"Why?"

"Because staying here means staying in your pattern. And your pattern is being watched." I pulled away. Sat up. Started getting dressed. "I need to be somewhere unpredictable for a while. Somewhere that breaks the surveillance model they've been building."

"Where?"

"You don't get to know that. That's the point."

I finished dressing. Picked up my bag. Moved toward the door while Daniel lay in bed watching me with something that looked like grief.

"I'll call you," I said.

"When?"

"When it's safe."

"It won't be safe."

"Then when it's safer." I paused in the doorway. "I love you, Daniel. But I can't protect you by being visible. I can only protect myself by being absent."

I left before dawn.

Packed my bag into the car while the neighborhood slept. No note this time. No explanation. Just the careful execution of an exit strategy I'd been planning for weeks.

Daniel stood in the doorway. Fully dressed despite the hour. Watching me load the trunk. Watching me check the mirrors. Watching me pull out of the driveway with the kind of still attention that suggested he was memorizing every detail.

I didn't look back.

Just drove. Varied my route. Checked for tails. Followed Theo's instructions about breaking patterns and creating uncertainty.

By the time the sun rose, I was somewhere Daniel couldn't find me.

And he was still standing in that doorway, waiting for threats he couldn't control.
