Davonyé
I’m distant with my family for the rest of the day. The only good thing about this situation is whatever they know that I don’t about Ariella has made mom not kill me over my decision to break up with Carisse. I tried to ask them all questions over dinner but they wouldn’t tell me shit. I still can’t believe mom knew, too.
I just wanna go the hell home. Back to her.
From what they said earlier, and a few things that witch said, I’ve realised Ariella’s parents are somehow important. I also think my sisters were in the same situation as me over their husbands. I just need answers, but Ariella still ain’t replied to my damn messages, and her cell’s still off.
I sit on the porch to smoke a blunt; I pull it hard and feel the burn in my lungs before I blow out the smoke. Carisse messaged me twenty minutes ago, but as I stare down at my cell, I still don’t know what to reply.
Please tell me what’s wrong. I hate this.
I ain’t about to break up with her over text so I need to keep shit between us bearable until we get back home. I’m gonna need to find a next place to live, too. Shit is stressful.
Just enjoy the time with your family, Carr. We good.
I hear the door and look up to see my sisters coming out, wearing only jeans and tees.
I pull my hood up. “Don’t you get cold now that you’re one of them?”
“Nah,” Clarisha replies as they sit down.
I’m surprised I even got a reply to that. I’m still pissed off with them. If they had of told me then maybe I wouldn’t have fucked shit up with Ariella. I coulda been prepared. “What do you want?” I scroll through my inbox. Still nothing.
“To see how you are. We’re sorry we didn’t tell you, Vonyé. Don’t hate us.”
“Right.”
“Seriously,” Tinashe says. “We wanted to, trust me, but we know it’s hard to accept the fact werewolves actually exist and aren’t just fantasy creatures.”
“You got that right.”
“You think you’ll let her change you?” Clarisha asks cautiously.
I look up from my cell. “What? Ariella can change me into one of you?”
“Yeah, it would be her. Unless her parents do it.”
Shit. Is that her goal? To make me one of her kind? “I ain’t really thought about it.”
“It’ll be hard to be with her now she’s a ware, Von. She’s gonna be really strong and won’t wanna risk hurting you by accident. Especially while she’s learning all her new skills.”
“What new skills?”
“Wow, she really hasn’t told you much, has she?”
“I told you, she didn’t get the chance. Clarence changed in front of me and I practically ran my ass out of there.”
“You didn’t scream, did you?” Tinashe asks with a smirk. “Cuz I’ve heard that Abriya and Clarence are massive.”
I narrow my eyes at her. “No, I fuckin’ didn’t.”
“Sorry. I know it seems unreal, but trust me, you want to be one of us. Anyone would once they realise what wares can do.”
“Tell me, then.”
“Well, first, there’s the not feelin’ the cold thing. We don’t get hot or cold anymore. We can also see the tiniest things and far in the distance, too. And all your senses are crazy good.”
“So you’re tellin’ me that you ain’t cold at all right now?”
They shake their heads.
“Alright, what else?”
“We’re really strong,” Tinashe says. “Literally, we can lift cars and all sortsa shit. We can also move fast and jump high as fuck. Seriously, when Ariella shows you, you’ll be amazed.”
I nod my head. “Did Kenyay and Marron change you two?”
“Yeah,” Clarisha replies. “A lot of the females are changed because it’s rare for them to be born.”
“Ariella was born…” Fuck… that means Harmony is probably one, too. Jesus…
“The James’ are different.”
I don’t bother askin’ why. I wanna be with her so bad, but if what they’re saying is true, I might have to seriously think about becoming one, too. “I need to talk to her.”
“Yeah, you do,” Tinashe says. “She won’t hurt you, Von, trust us. You’ve got nothing to fear from her.”
“How do you know that?”
“We just do,” Clarisha says.
I flick the blunt and sigh. “My life is such a mess. I don't feel like myself, I'm doin’ all this crazy shit, and the only peace I feel is when I'm with her.”
“Because she's your m–um, she's important to you, okay? That's all I can say. Don't fight it, baby bro. Trust me, you'll only cause yourself emotional distress if you do. We’ve been there.”
“These feelings for her came along so quick, though, I’m just worried they’ll go away just as fast.”
“They won't.”
“But why?”
“I can't say.”
I roll my eyes. “Is that why you moved to Alaska? Did you feel like that about Kenyay?”
She smiles. “I still do.”
“Ain't you out of that honeymoon stage yet?”
She smirks and shakes her head. “The honeymoon stage never goes away when you're with your mate.”
“Mate?”
“Clarisha!” Tinashe complains.
“Fuck,” Clarisha hisses. “Just talk to her, alright?” She gets up and Tinashe follows her inside.
Mate? What the fuck did she mean by that?
I open Google search, and like a crazy person, I type in ‘What is a werewolf mate?’.
‘The mythical Werewolf has one true mate in their lifetime, also known as a soulmate. Mates are werewolves’ destined partners that are spiritually linked before birth. Once a werewolf finds their mate, they will become infatuated and possessive over them.’
Shit… that sounds just like me right about now. So if me and Ariella are mates, then that means she’ll be feeling the same as I do. So why ain’t she messaged me back?
***
I wake up after a couple hours sleep and still feel tormented as hell. I swear I'm losing my fuckin’ mind. I check my cell and even make sure I’ve got reception. That woman from The Ring said Ariella would be waking up today, yet she still ain’t messaged me back.
Not a fucking word.
My phone vibrates in my hand and I feel a rush of relief when I see Ariella’s name on my notification panel.
Hey, I'm awake now and I'm good. Thanks for checking. Hope you’re having a good time with your family.
My body relaxes at knowing she's okay, but she ain't mentioned seeing me…
Shit makes me feel a kinda way.
What's it like being a werewolf, then? I reply, trying to be as casual as she’s been.
She stays online and types. I ain't changed into one again, yet. A lot of my family members are here so I ain't had a chance. Maybe tomorrow I will.
Kl. How do you feel?
Good. Different but good. How’s Ontario?
Shit. Everything is shit without you around. It’s been ok.
Just okay?
I need to see you, Ariella. Fuck it. I can’t hold it any longer. I feel my heart all up in my throat while I wait for her message to come through.
I can't see you.
What? Why the hell not?
Because you ain't mine, Davonyé.
Fuck that. I'll leave here right now if you want me to.
It’s not about what I want. Besides, it ain't safe for us. I could hurt you.
What the fuck is that supposed to mean?
I got things to learn... I could kill you easy if I ain't careful. I can't take that chance.
Fuck that. I’ll take the chance for us. This is some bullshit, shawty. I can't fuckin’ think without you. I'm losing my mind, why don’t you get that?
I’m sorry.
Sorry? I know we’re mates, Ariella. You can’t keep me away from you.
How do you know that?
She replied to that fast. Yeah, I know, beautiful.
I Googled that shit. I wanna see you. I’m coming home tomorrow and I’m gonna come over.
You can’t. Don’t come here.
I don’t reply. My mind is already made up. I’ma drive back to Montreal, end shit with Carisse, and then I’m gonna go see her. I’ll become like her if I have to, but she ain’t gonna keep me away no fuckin’ more.
