Spencer's attention shifted towards Nelly as the helicopter departed, causing a mixture of complicated emotions to glisten in his eyes. Nelly coincidentally met his gaze but quickly averted her eyes. Sensing something was amiss, she asked him what was wrong. Spencer hesitated before approaching her, feeling like the words he had carefully crafted had lost their authenticity and meaning in that moment.
"What is it? Just say it. I dislike when people hesitate with their words," Nelly said, scrutinizing him. However, she already had an idea of what he wanted to say.
After a moment of hesitation, he looked at her and simply said, "Thank you." "Is that all?" she raised an eyebrow, curious.
"There are so many things I want to say, but after thinking about it, nothing seems more appropriate than these words," he replied.
Nelly pondered for a moment before nodding. "Alright, I accept it." Spencer stared at her, feeling increasingly guilty as she appeared nonchalant.
"I'm serious, thank you!" He met her gaze and continued, "But don't worry, I will find a cure for you. I'm willing to give my life if I can't accomplish that, and I mean it!"
"Don't!" Nelly smiled and declined, "I accept your former idea, but let's forget about the latter. Do you not trust me?"
"Of course I do. But your life is precious, so stay alive and contribute to society. Life and death are determined by fate. I will decide what to do with my own life," Nelly said firmly.
Spencer wanted to say something else, but before he could, she added, "The reason I helped Thalia wasn't solely because of you. I had my own reasons. I'm grateful to her for accompanying Tony on this journey. Besides, the three kids still need her protection in the future. Basically, Thalia is the perfect person for this."
Spencer simply stared at her. Regardless of what she said, he remained grateful to her. Their relationship had been purely platonic before, but after that incident, his feelings for Nelly had become more complicated. The guilt and self-blame he carried would continue to haunt him for the rest of his life.
Seeing his silence, Nelly asked, "Oh, right. Based on Thalia's personality, she would definitely come to you to have her blood drawn to delay the effects of the poison. So, what did you tell her?"
"I gave her some vitamins and told her I had developed a medicine that could delay the poison's effects. Do you believe me?" Spencer nodded, feeling a mix of angel and demon within him.
Nelly chuckled, understanding his internal struggle. "She hates being lied to, you know. But for now, let's not dwell on it. Focus on researching the antidote and developing it if you can. I believe in you," she reassured him. He nodded and left.
As he walked away, Nelly withdrew her gaze and turned to the man standing behind her, who had a cold and somber expression. "What's with you? Are you upset about what happened?" she asked, concerned.
His face grew even gloomier as he replied solemnly, "Spencer's being too hard on himself. He blames himself for what happened to Thalia. But he'll redeem himself. I'll make sure of it."
Nelly reassured him with a lowly voice, her eyes filled with determination. "Don't worry, he'll be fine. We'll support him and help him through this. As long as he's alive, he can find redemption. That much is true."
The man said nothing and maintained his stoic expression, unwilling to express his worries openly. He simply nodded, and his tense face remained set in stone.
