Chapter 20 Absence

Ch. 20 / 115 Dec 18, 2024

Lea's POV

I woke up early that day because I had to wrap up a lot of work. I would be taking the day off but that didn't mean I would slack at work.

I preferred to finish my work in advance and it impressed my employer a lot. And no, it wasn't Phill like we had previously decided.

I was already indebted to him for all his support. I could not burden him anymore.

I had landed myself a perfect job in a reputed script writing agency. The mode of the work allowed me the flexibility of working both in the office and at home.

I loved my work. And I loved the pay more. But most of all I loved to work because it kept my mind busy. It kept me from going back to thinking about Jake.

The only reason I was taking the day off was because I had an appointment at the gynecologist.

The pregnancy was complicated and I was advised to take a scan every month.

I was really anxious as I pulled on my hoodie and a pair of joggers.

As soon as I opened my door," Surprise! "

It was Phill standing at my door.

" Phill? What are you doing here? Don't you have your shift? ”

Phill looked offended because I ignored the packed of donuts that he was shoving in my face.

" Can't a doctor take a leave? Despite the Hypocritical Oath, we are still human beings! " He joked.

I laughed. I barely laughed.

" What is that supposed to mean! ” He pulled out a donut from the packet and shoved it in mouth, may be to shut me up. He clearly didn't want to answer my question.

" I am leaving, you know. Do you want to hang around? Shall I leave the keys? ” I asked as I looked at the clock.

" No! No! Absolutely not necessarily. Let me accompany you. ”

I looked at him suspiciously.

So that was the reason he was here.

We had this talk earlier and I had made it very clear that I didn't need him to accompany me everywhere.

But he insisted because it would be my first ultrasound after relocating. He didn't want me to be alone.

I was already running late to I let him drive and didn't argue about it anymore. Besides, he would better understand my current situation and I trusted him like I trusted no one else.

That only disadvantage of living in a remote location was that you had to drive around quite a lot to get from one point to the other.

We pulled up at the gas station to fill our tank.

It was quite crowded and that was unusual. We had to literally queue up.

Finally when finished filling up, Phill asked,

" Is anything up in town? "

" Yeah! Yeah! These kids are graduating. The university is throwing a lavish party. They got some celebrities to come to town. Business is going to be good today. "

He chuckled.

Phill tipped him as we left the gas station and sped towards the hospital.

There were many other pregnant women sitting before me and I waited for my name to be announced.

They were all there with their partners, holding each other's hands and it made my wound raw.

" Want some iced coffee? " Lucky that Phill came along.

" Thanks! " I grabbed the glass from his hand and involuntarily rested my head against his shoulder.

He didn't move. He slid closer to make me comfortable.

We were no doubt the youngest people in the room and all eyes were glued on us.

Finally they called my name and I walked inside. Phill didn't immediately follow me inside.

The doctor asked me all sorts of questions from my appetite to the colour of my urine and stool and my mood swings before asking me to pull my tshirt up.

Phill entered at the exact same moment.

" He is? " The doctor asked.

" He is with me! " Was all that I could answer.

" Hello! I am a doctor myself! Doctor Rodger, to be precise! Can we move ahead with the scan? ”

The gynecologist's mouth opened wide.

" Oh, the famous doctor Rodgers. So this is the patient you referred to me. I will take good care of her. ”

He put on his gloves before putting the gel on my belly. My bones were had recovered remarkably but the cracks weren't completely healed yet.

I still felt severe jolt of pain shooting across my body but it was nothing compared to what I felt in my heart.

" The baby looks healthy but a little underdeveloped. It's nothing to worry, though. Given her history, it's growth is remarkable. I would prescribe some vitamins to boost... "

The doctor went on and on but my eyes were fixed on the monitor.

A little blob of a baby. A tiny head and other indistinguishable features. It was one thing to know that you are pregnant and another to see the child moving.

The feeling was surreal and it made my heart shatter once more.

I grabbed Phill's arms.

He was listening to what the doctors had been telling very attentively.

But my touch immediately made him turn towards me.

" What's wrong, Lea? " He asked, his voice almost a whisper.

" I need to get out of here. Please! ”

Phill nodded.

" I will call you for the rest of the details! " Phill told the doctor.

" Definitely! Lea is my priority patient. I will send you all the details by tonight. " The doctor chirped , mesmerized by Phill's presence.

Once outside, I was holding onto Phill and limping. Not because I could not walk or felt pain but because I was feeling extremely weak. Jake still had such a hold on me that his absence almost crippled me.

The next moment I found Phill scooping me up effortlessly and walking towards the parking lot as the entire hospital watched.

" What are you doing? " I asked trying to make him put me down.

" You are too slow, Lea! I don't have the time to run a 'sloth-race' with you! "
