POV: Raevan
The moment Soraya rejects him, the battlefield changes shape.
Not physically. Not visibly. But something raw and ancient shifts, like the desert itself recognizes the break in fate. Zarek’s soldiers tighten their formation. Saren shields rise in a wall of bone-white and gold. And behind me, Ashra wolves begin to snarl—low, lethal, the kind of sound that comes from instinct, not orders.
But none of it matters.
Because Zarek steps forward.
And everything in me answers.
He stands across the Moonsand like a dark god, eyes gold as molten ore, smile thin as a razor. His cloak ripples in the wind. His wolf presses beneath his skin, visible in the tightening of his jaw, the twisting shadow around his shoulders.
I step toward him before I even think.
Kaide grabs my arm.
“Raevan, don’t—”
I shove him off.
This isn’t strategy. This isn’t politics. This is something older. This is blood, territory, claim. Zarek’s voice carries across the sand.
“Alpha Raevan,” he says, almost gently. “Still clinging to your delusion of strength, I see.”
My lips curl.
“You’re brave today,” I answer. “Let’s see if that survives the next few minutes.”
His smile widens.
“Then come.”
The desert wind cuts through us as we move.
I shift first.
My bones crack, stretch, reshape in a violent cascade. Black fur bursts across my skin. My claws tear into the sand. The dread wolf rises—the beast Saren tried to break in chains, the monster the desert whispers about.
Zarek shifts after, slower, controlled, smug—his wolf pale-gold fur and massive, eyes gleaming like suns, a creature bred for dominance and cruelty.
Two alphas. Two kings. Two monsters walking toward each other.
The armies step back instinctively, clearing the center of the battlefield as if pushed by invisible force.
Zarek snarls and lunges.
I meet him head-on, jaws clashing like metal. His fangs scrape my jawline. My claws rip across his ribs. Blood sprays onto the Moonsand. He snaps at my throat, but I twist aside, slashing across his flank with enough strength to send him skidding.
He recovers fast—too fast.
His wolf is well-fed, well-rested, trained for this. Mine is fueled by rage, grief, and months of wanting to tear Saren apart for what they did to Soraya.
Zarek charges again, paws pounding the ground like hammer blows. I leap over him, twisting midair, and slam down onto his back. He rolls, trying to crush me beneath his weight, but I wrench away, digging my claws into his shoulder.
His howl shakes the dunes.
He answers with a burst of power—raw, golden, blinding. It hits me like a wall and sends me flying back across the sand. I land hard, ribs cracking under the impact.
“Soraya!" Vienne screams in the distance. “He’s trying to kill him—”
Soraya’s voice answers, sharp as a blade.
“Don’t interfere!”
I rise, trembling. Golden light pulses through the battlefield as Zarek’s wolf approaches, glowing with alpha magic. He circles me, teeth bared.
“Pathetic,” he growls, voice vibrating through the mental link alphas share in battle. “You think you can stand between me and my destiny? You’re a broken thing, Raevan. A wolf who had to be beaten to learn obedience.”
I lunge, snarling.
Our bodies collide again, sending tremors up the dunes. I sink my teeth into his foreleg. He roars, twisting to bite down on the back of my neck. Pain explodes through my spine. He forces me down, trying to pin me.
“Surrender,” he growls into my fur.
Never.
I kick upward, claws raking his chest. The move catches him off guard. He stumbles back. I spin, lunging low, tackling him to the ground. My jaws clamp around his throat—but he blasts me with another surge of golden magic, powerful enough to tear me off him.
My body hits the sand again.
“Raevan!” Soraya’s voice cuts through my haze.
I look at her.
Her silver-glowing eyes meet mine. Not fear. Not panic. Faith. My wolf surges. I stand, shaking sand off my fur.
Zarek paces, bleeding more now—wounds streaking across his white-gold coat. His breath comes harsher. He flicks an ear toward Soraya.
“She will be mine,” he says in my mind. “You delaying me changes nothing.”
My snarl rips the air.
I leap—faster, harder, faster than I thought possible. Our bodies collide again, claws tearing, jaws snapping. We roll through the Moonsand in a hurricane of fur and blood. I rip into his shoulder. He bites down on my foreleg. We slam into a dune, the entire ridge collapsing around us.
The earth shakes.
A ring of magic bursts outward, scattering sand like smoke.
When the dust clears, we’re both on our feet—swaying, bleeding, barely holding our wolf forms.
Zarek tilts his head.
“You fight well, dread wolf. But I am the future of this desert.”
I bare my teeth.
“No. You’re its rot.”
His eyes flash.
We charge again, both wolves throwing everything we have left. Our bodies collide with a crack like thunder. I feel something break—his bone or mine, I don’t know. Doesn’t matter.
Because I manage to get behind him.
I slam him down.
My claws press into his throat.
The battlefield holds its breath.
Zarek snarls, struggling, golden power sparking under his skin, but he’s spent—bleeding, weakened, and I—
I am still standing.
Soraya steps forward slowly, eyes shining, expression unreadable.
“Raevan…” she whispers.
Zarek snaps upward suddenly, trying to slash my eye.
But I’m faster.
My teeth clamp into the side of his muzzle, crushing him back into the sand with a force that rattles through the dunes. I growl into his face, deep and dark, the kind of sound that makes lesser wolves drop to their bellies.
I am one snap away from killing him.
One snap from ending this war.
One snap from ending everything he ever was.
“Raevan,” Soraya says again, louder this time.
I freeze.
Her gaze meets mine—soft, pleading, furious.
“Not like this.”
My throat tightens.
Zarek struggles beneath me, wheezing.
“Kill me,” he chokes. “Go on. Prove you’re the monster they say.”
I tighten my grip.
I loosen it.
I step back.
Zarek collapses onto the sand, coughing blood.
The battlefield erupts in whispers.
Ashra stares. Zehrael watches in awe. Saren trembles. And I stand there shaking, wolf fur soaked in blood, chest heaving, eyes locked on Soraya.
Then I hear a noise behind me.
