Ian’s POV
It felt as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for the battle to begin. We were in a neutral territory, a clearing deep in the forest that was between the vampire realm and the outskirts of the human world. I could tell that the place had seen conflict before, the ground stained with the blood of wars long past. Now it would see another.
I could hear the sounds of my forces assembling behind me—vampires sharpening their blades and stakes, speaking in low, tense whispers as they prepared for the fight that would start any moment from now. The weight of responsibility hung heavy on my shoulders. I had never wanted this, to be a king at war. But here I was, leading an army to stop a rebellion that threatened everything I had fought to protect.
Sophia stood at my side, her eyes scanning the area. She was pale but resolute, and I could see the fire burning in her. Even now, pregnant with our child, she refused to leave my side. I had argued, pleaded with her to stay behind, but I knew her too well. She would never let me fight this war without her.
“Ian, we need to move soon,” Jacob said, stepping up beside me. His face was grim, and I could see the weariness in his eyes. He had been fighting at my side since this all began, loyal to a fault, and now, like me, he was ready for it to end.
I nodded, my jaw tight. “Have we spotted Mike yet?”
Jacob shook his head. “Not yet, but he’s here. I can feel it.”
I glanced at Sophia. She hadn’t spoken much since we arrived, but I could feel the tension radiating off her. “Sophia…” I began, but she cut me off.
“I’m staying,” she said firmly, not even looking at me. Her eyes remained locked on the forest, as if she was expecting an attack at any moment.
I clenched my fists, the urge to protect her warring with the reality that I couldn’t force her to do anything. Not anymore. “Just stay close to me,” I said quietly. It was the only compromise I could make.
The wind shifted, and suddenly the air was thick with the scent of blood. My senses sharpened, and I felt the presence of the rogue vampires before I saw them. They were coming. I glanced at Jacob, who gave a grim nod.
The trees at the edge of the clearing rustled, and then they emerged—Mike’s forces. A horde of vampires and werewolves, their eyes glowing with the lust for power. And Mike was at the head of them, standing tall and confident.
My blood boiled at the sight of him. He had once been my closest ally, someone I trusted with my life. Now, he was leading a rebellion that threatened to tear apart everything I cared about.
“Mike!” I shouted, stepping forward. My voice echoed through the clearing. “This ends now. You’re done.”
Mike’s eyes locked on mine, a cruel smile curling at the edges of his lips. “You always did think you could control everything, didn’t you, Ian? But look around. Your reign is crumbling. The council is divided, your people are dying, and soon, you’ll lose everything.”
I gritted my teeth, stepping closer. “You’re the one who’s going to lose, Mike. You’ve betrayed your people. You’ve betrayed me.”
Mike laughed, a sound that grated on my nerves. “Betrayed you? No, Ian. I’ve liberated them. You were never fit to lead. And now, I’m going to prove it.”
I felt the surge of anger in my chest, but I forced myself to stay calm. I couldn’t let him get under my skin, not now. Not with so much at stake.
The battle began with a roar. Vampires and werewolves clashed in a flurry of movement, the sound of snarls and bodies colliding filled the air. I moved quickly, my senses heightened as I fought my way through Mike’s allies. I needed to reach him.
But even as I fought, my mind was on Sophia. I could hear her fighting beside me, her breaths coming in quick, sharp bursts as she defended herself. Every instinct in me screamed to get to her, to protect her, but I knew I had to focus. Mike was the real threat, and if I didn’t stop him, this would never end.
I sliced through a rogue vampire, his body crumpling to the ground, and then I spotted Mike again, his eyes gleaming as he cut down one of my men. I charged at him, my sword raised, and he turned just in time to block my strike.
Our blades clashed, sparks flying as we struggled for dominance. “You’ve already lost, Ian,” Mike snarled, his face twisted with rage. “Even if you kill me, there will always be others. Your kingdom is built on lies and weakness.”
I grunted, shoving him back. “My kingdom is built on justice. Something you wouldn’t understand.”
Mike lunged at me again, and we traded blows, each strike more vicious than the last. I was starting to get tired. When last had I fought so viciously like this? But I couldn’t stop. Not until this was over.
Behind me, I heard a shout—a voice I recognized all too well. Sophia.
I turned just in time to see her struggling against a rogue vampire, her face contorted in pain. Panic surged through me. “Sophia!” I shouted, moving toward her.
But before I could reach her, Mike was on me again, his sword slicing through the air. I barely managed to block the blow, but the force of it sent me stumbling back.
“You’re distracted, Ian,” Mike taunted, circling me like a predator. “You can’t protect her and win this fight. You’ll have to choose.”
His words hit me like a physical blow, and I realized with a sickening certainty that he was right. If I kept trying to protect Sophia, I wouldn’t be able to end this. But if I focused on defeating Mike, I might lose her.
For the first time in my life, I felt truly trapped. There was no right answer here, no path that didn’t lead to some kind of loss.
Sophia’s scream cut through the chaos, and my heart clenched in my chest. I could see her, fighting off another attacker, her movements slower than usual. The pregnancy was taking its toll on her, and I knew she couldn’t keep this up much longer.
“Ian!” Jacob’s voice broke through my thoughts, and I turned to see him fighting his way toward me. “We need to end this now!”
I looked back at Mike, who was watching me with a smug grin. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was forcing me to choose between my people and the woman I loved.
And in that moment, I realized I didn’t know what to do.
I could save Sophia. I could abandon the fight, focus all my energy on getting her out of here, away from the danger. But if I did that, Mike would win. He would take control of the vampire realm, and everything I had fought for would be destroyed.
Or I could stay, fight Mike, and hope that Sophia could hold her own long enough for me to defeat him. But the thought of losing her… I couldn’t bear it.
Time seemed to slow as I realized painfully. This was what he had wanted all along. My heart was pounding in my chest, my mind racing as I tried to figure out what to do.
Sophia’s life was in danger. My people’s future was in danger.
And I had to make a choice.
