The Cruel Emperor’s Bride

Chapter 84

Ch. 84 / 150 Dec 05, 2025

Silence swallowed the healing chamber.

Only Kaedan’s shallow breaths — ragged, fading — broke the stillness.

Ariaxa’s heart hammered painfully as the healers’ words echoed in her mind:

A life-bond ties two souls together. If one dies… the other dies too.

Forever.

She stood frozen beside the obsidian table, staring at Kaedan’s unmoving form. His skin was cold. His lips pale. His heartbeat faint enough that her own pulse seemed louder.

She had faced armies.

She had faced Rhaelle.

She had faced death more than once.

But this—

Binding her soul to Kaedan’s?

There was no turning back.

“If you choose this,” Mirel whispered softly, “you choose him for the rest of your life.”

Ariaxa’s breath trembled.

Her gaze drifted over Kaedan’s face — strong even in stillness, scarred from battle, marked with a life of darkness and pain. A face that had stared at her with fury, hunger, devotion… and something deeper he had yet to name.

She remembered his voice on the battlefield.

If I die… rule Vharon.

She hadn’t understood then.

She did now.

He was trying to give her freedom if he didn’t survive.

But the thought of ruling alone —

Of living alone —

Of breathing in a world without him —

Her chest ached.

Her hand rose shakily to his cheek.

“You stubborn, impossible man…” she whispered, voice cracking. “Do you really think I would choose freedom over you?”

A tear slipped down her cheek, falling onto his skin.

Riven reacted before anyone else.

“No. Absolutely not.”

He stepped between her and the table, eyes wild, grief and fury battling behind them. “You are not doing this. You deserve your own life — your own choices — your own future.”

Ariaxa met his gaze, unflinching.

“Kaedan is my choice.”

Riven shook his head, voice breaking. “You don’t understand the cost. If he falls in battle — you die.”

“I know.”

“If the council rebels — you die.”

“I know.”

“If someone poisons him — you die.”

She stepped forward until she was eye to eye with him.

“And if he dies now… I die anyway. Maybe not in body. But everything else?”

Her voice turned to steel.

“Freedom means nothing if he dies.”

Riven flinched — as if the words cut him deeper than any blade.

For the first time since she met him, the commander bowed his head… defeated.

“…then at least let me protect you both,” he whispered hoarsely.

She touched his arm gently. “You already do.”

Riven swallowed, unable to speak.

He stepped aside.

Ariaxa moved back to Kaedan’s side.

Her throat tightened.

Her hands trembled.

But she didn’t hesitate.

She took the ritual blade — ancient, etched with forbidden sigils — and drew it across her palm. Golden blood pooled instantly, carrying sunlight magic within it.

The healers gasped.

“The Sunborn bloodline…” one whispered. “It’s awakening.”

Ariaxa ignored them.

She knelt beside Kaedan’s bed, pressing her bleeding palm to the rune-stone.

“I bind myself willingly,” she whispered, voice steady despite her shaking hands. “My life for his. My soul with his. My fate beside his.”

Mirel stepped forward, eyes wet with fear and awe.

She placed a trembling hand above Kaedan’s heart.

“Emperor Kaedan Draven… may the ancients forgive us.”

She carved the rune.

Directly over his heart.

Kaedan did not move.

Not even a twitch.

The moment the blade left his skin, the symbol burst into glowing red — deep, ancient, pulsing with dark royalty.

Ariaxa pressed her marked palm to the rune carved into him.

Her golden blood met his crimson.

The connection hissed like steam meeting flame.

The healers stepped back.

Riven grabbed the table, knuckles whitening.

The runes flared.

Gold and red.

Sunlight and blood.

Life and shadow.

They merged.

The air blazed with magic.

Ariaxa felt something pull at her soul — a hook, a tether, a gravity she had no words for.

Her breath hitched.

Kaedan’s chest rose sharply.

Then again.

Then—

His spine arched off the bed, his entire body lifting as if yanked upward by an invisible chain. His throat strained, his lips parted in a silent scream. The rune over his heart blazed like molten iron.

Ariaxa gasped, reaching for him, but Riven held her back.

“No,” he whispered. “The ritual has started.”

Kaedan’s body convulsed violently—as if possessed.
