The severing spell struck Ariaxa directly in the chest.
Not her body—
her bond-mark.
The place where her soul was tied to Kaedan’s.
The world went white.
Ariaxa’s back arched violently, her scream tearing from a throat that felt ripped raw. Magic exploded from her ribs like fire scorching heaven itself. The runes around her shattered. The altar cracked. The chamber convulsed like a beast in agony.
Kaedan was thrown to the floor.
But he crawled.
Even with shadow pinning his muscles, even with blood spilling from his mouth, he clawed his way to her.
“Ariaxa—ARIA—DON’T YOU—DON’T—”
The severing spell ripped through the bond.
He felt it like claws tearing at his heart.
Ariaxa convulsed, eyes rolling back, fingers clawing at the air as if reaching for him.
The bond tore—
split—
shredded—
And for one horrifying second—
Kaedan felt nothing.
No warmth.
No pulse.
No Ariaxa.
Just an empty, howling void.
His scream cracked stone.
“NO! GIVE HER BACK!”
He dragged himself to her, fighting the paralysis with sheer rage—
And then—
Something impossible happened.
The bond didn’t snap.
It reformed.
Not delicately.
Not gently.
Violently.
Sunfire and shadow slammed together.
Two souls collided like stars.
Threads of magic wove deeper, stronger, unbreakable.
A fusion.
A merging.
A choice neither made—
and yet both became.
Ariaxa’s scream rose to a pitch the human ear wasn’t meant to hear. Her hands flooded with gold so bright the mages recoiled in horror.
“No,” one whispered. “No—NO—this shouldn’t—”
Too late.
Sunfire E R U P T E D from Ariaxa’s palms.
A pillar of white-gold flame ripped through the sanctum, swallowing the mages whole. They evaporated into ash before they could even scream.
Every shadow sigil burned to cinders.
Every corrupted rune shattered.
The altar itself glowed like a newborn star.
And Ariaxa fell.
Kaedan caught her.
Her body went limp in his arms, head lolling against his chest. His hands shook as he cupped her face.
“Ariaxa—Ariaxa—look at me—please—open your eyes—”
The healers rushed in behind Riven, gasping when they saw the scene.
“Gods preserve us—she unleashed a Solar Ascension—”
“Check her vitals—quickly!”
“No, wait—look at her mark—”
Kaedan’s heartbeat hammered as he pulled her sun-scorched collar aside.
And then—
Time froze.
Because on Ariaxa’s chest, where the bond-mark had once been a simple sunburst—
a new symbol had formed.
Still glowing faintly.
A crown.
A crown of radiating sunfire.
Kaedan’s breath broke apart.
“She—she’s… changing,” one healer whispered, voice trembling.
“No,” Riven muttered. “Not changing. Becoming.”
Ariaxa stirred weakly, eyes fluttering open.
“Kaedan…” she whispered.
He cupped her face with reverent, terrified hands.
“I’m here,” he said, voice shaking so hard it barely formed words. “I’m here, love—don’t move—don’t try to speak—”
Her fingers lifted and brushed his jaw.
Warm.
Alive.
The bond pulsed between them—deep, ancient, whole.
Kaedan leaned his forehead to hers, tears burning down his cheeks.
“The bond…” he whispered. “It didn’t break.”
Ariaxa shook her head faintly.
“It went deeper.”
Kaedan swallowed hard, chest heaving.
“The bond has chosen your fate,” he whispered, voice cracking like shattered glass. “Ariaxa…”
He pulled her against him, trembling.
“You’re becoming more than my equal.”
His lips brushed her temple, breath hot and frantic.
“You’re becoming my destiny.”
