The Cruel Emperor’s Bride

Chapter 90

Ch. 90 / 150 Dec 05, 2025

The palace finally quieted.

The dead had been dragged away.

The wounded carried to safety.

The halls still echoed with smoke and memory.

But for the first time since the siege began, Ariaxa and Kaedan were alone.

Kaedan led her through the private passageways — corridors only emperors and their chosen consorts ever walked. His steps were slow, stiff with pain, but he refused to lean on guards or the wall.

He leaned only on her.

They reached the imperial balcony — a high, carved platform overlooking the battlefield, still smoldering, still scarred. The air smelled of ash, blood, and magic. Dawn crept along the horizon, soft gold fighting the dying shadows.

Ariaxa stood beside him, silent for once.

Kaedan exhaled shakily, gripping the stone railing so tightly cracks splintered beneath his fingers.

“I thought I lost you today.”

Ariaxa’s heart clenched, but she said nothing.

Kaedan’s gaze stayed on the battlefield — but his voice softened, breaking.

“I fear losing you more than death. More than war. More than the Triarchs.”

She swallowed hard.

He continued, quieter:

“You weaken me.”

Ariaxa stiffened.

“You make me hesitate. You make me rethink. You make me… feel.”

His voice nearly cracked.

“And yet—”

He turned to face her fully.

“You make me stronger than I ever was.”

Ariaxa’s breath caught.

Kaedan’s jaw flexed. His eyes glowed faintly with the bond’s gold.

“I cannot rule without you.”

A tremor ran through him.

“I cannot breathe without knowing where you are.”

“Kaedan—” she whispered.

He stepped closer, hand brushing hers.

“You said I matter.”

His voice nearly broke on the next words.

“So I will tell you the truth.”

Her heartbeat thundered.

His throat worked as he whispered — softly, hoarsely, reverently:

“I love you.”

The words hit her like a blade and a balm all at once.

Her breath shattered.

Her eyes burned.

Her knees almost buckled.

She stepped closer, laying her hand over his chest where the bond glowed faintly beneath his skin.

His breath hitched under her palm.

“Kaedan…” she whispered, “you survived torture. War. Betrayal. Yourself.”

Her fingers curled into his shirt.

“Let me help you build something worth loving.”

For a moment—

just a moment—

Kaedan Draven, feared Emperor of Vharon, looked young.

Vulnerable.

Human.

His eyes softened — truly, deeply — for the first time in years.

Slowly, almost reverently, he touched his forehead to hers.

The world stilled.

Magic hummed faintly between them.

The dawn light brushed their skin like a blessing.

Two souls bound.

Two rulers reborn.

Two futures entwined.

The horizon blazed gold.

Not from war.

From sunrise.

A new era beginning.

Then—

The balcony door creaked open.

A cloaked figure stepped inside and knelt immediately.

“Emperor. Princess.”

Kaedan snarled, “This had better be important.”

The messenger held out a sealed scroll — marked with three sigils in shadow, silver, and blood.

“The Triarchs request parley,” he said with a shaking voice.

Ariaxa frowned. “With Kaedan?”

The messenger swallowed hard.

“No… with you, Princess.”

Kaedan’s eyes snapped open, fury igniting instantly.

The messenger bowed lower.

“They demand to meet Ariaxa… alone.”
