The Cruel Emperor’s Bride

Chapter 126

Ch. 126 / 150 Dec 05, 2025

The palace corridors were drenched in shadow.

Not darkness — shadow — oily, shifting, alive. It clung to the ceiling like a living fog, flickering with violet sparks.

Ariaxa, Kaedan, and Riven sprinted through bodies — loyal guards sprawled on the marble floors, eyes glazed, veins blackened from necromantic poison.

Kaedan hissed with a fury that vibrated the walls.

“Triarch magic,” Riven growled, kneeling over a fallen guard. “Soul drain. Instant.”

Ariaxa’s breath came too fast. “We have to keep moving. The bond chamber—”

Kaedan grabbed her hand without hesitation.

“Don’t fall behind.”

The bond pulsed with their combined terror and rage.

They burst into the final hallway—

And froze.

Because the door to the Inner Sanctum was open.

Wide open.

No guards.

The runes carved into the archway — the ones that protected the palace’s deepest magic — were cracked, burned through with symbols glowing sickly purple.

Kaedan’s voice was a snarl. “Someone opened it from inside.”

Ariaxa stepped forward—

And nearly tripped over a body.

Not a guard.

A councilor.

Councilor Maelys — the soft-spoken man who managed trade routes and grain storage. A harmless bureaucrat. A man who gifted her a book of Solar poetry when she first arrived in Vharon.

He was kneeling, shaking, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks.

And behind him—

A Triarch mage towered like a shadow given form, face hidden behind a bone mask. Dark sigils spiraled across the floor around them, carving themselves deeper into the stone with each pulse of magic.

Ariaxa felt the spell tug at her chest.

At her bond.

At her power.

Kaedan moved faster than breath.

“You traitorous—”

Ariaxa grabbed his wrist. “STOP!”

Kaedan jerked against her hold, eyes blazing with murderous intent.

Riven blocked the doorway, sword raised at the Triarch mage.

Councilor Maelys sobbed into his hands, voice cracking apart.

“I—I’m sorry—I’m so sorry—I didn’t want this—”

Kaedan’s fangs descended.

“You betrayed Vharon.”

“They have my family!” Maelys screamed. “My wife—my daughter—my grandchildren—they’re slaves on the Eastern front. They said they would free them if I—if I opened the sanctum—if I helped them—”

Kaedan lunged—

Ariaxa slammed a barrier of Sun-fire between them.

“KAEDAN!” she snapped, voice like a command from a throne she hadn’t yet claimed. “We need him alive!”

“He DAMNED us—”

“He DAMNED THEMSELVES!” Maelys sobbed. “They said if I helped them… they would let them live. If I opened the sanctum… if I led them to the bond chamber…”

Ariaxa knelt in front of him, despite Kaedan’s furious growl.

“Tell me everything,” she said softly.

The Triarch mage hissed a warning, but Riven pressed his blade to its throat, forcing silence.

Maelys shook, entire body trembling.

“The spell—” he gasped. “It’s not meant to destroy the palace. That’s what they wanted me to think. It’s… it’s meant to sever your bond.”

Ariaxa felt her blood freeze.

“Sever…” she whispered, hand moving unconsciously to her chest.

Kaedan’s shadow surged behind her like a storm.

“If you break our bond—”

“She DIES,” Riven finished, eyes widening in horror.

Maelys sobbed harder. “They want her Sun power. They want to REMOVE it. They want to TURN her into the next weapon of the Triarchy.”

Ariaxa’s breath shattered.

Kaedan’s voice was a whisper edged with the deadliest rage she had ever heard.

“Where is the core sigil? Where is the heart of the spell?”

Maelys pointed, sobbing, toward the center of the floor — where the sigil glowed brightest, pulsing like a living heart.

Ariaxa stepped forward.

The spell reached for her.

Hungry.

Cold.

Greedy.

It tugged at her chest like claws trying to rip her bond mark out of her body.

Kaedan cried out, doubling over as the bond backlashed, electricity stabbing through his ribs.

Riven steadied him. “Emperor—Kaedan—stay with her—”

Kaedan snarled through clenched teeth, “I’m not letting them take her.”

Ariaxa lifted her hands, Sun-fire blazing in her palms.

“We break it,” she said. “Together.”

She stepped toward the sigil.

The spell pulsed—

And the floor collapsed.

It didn’t crack.

It opened — like a trapdoor to another realm.

The entire inner sanctum shook violently as the ground disintegrated into a pit of swirling shadow-light.

Riven grabbed Ariaxa’s arm.

Kaedan grabbed her waist.

Maelys screamed something—lost to the roar.

The Triarch mage laughed beneath its bone mask.

“Too late,” it hissed. “The spell—has begun.”

The sigil flared—

And the sanctum floor gave way, dragging them into the void below.
