The Cruel Emperor’s Bride

Chapter 122

Ch. 122 / 150 Dec 05, 2025

The siege-beast lurched to a halt, its massive lungs heaving black vapor. Chains of shadow-fire rattled around its limbs as Rhaelle stepped down from its back with all the grace of a queen mounting a throne.

Her boots touched the cracked stone lightly.

Her illusions followed her like shards of broken light — flickering, twisting, trying to form shapes but fracturing again and again. The air around her shimmered as though reality itself struggled to contain her.

She strode forward, eyes locked on Ariaxa.

“Well, well,” Rhaelle purred. “The Sun-Eclipse Queen finally shines.”

Ariaxa didn’t step back.

Didn’t flinch.

Didn’t blink.

“I told you I’d end you,” Ariaxa said.

Rhaelle’s smirk widened. “And yet here you are. Bleeding again for a man who will do nothing but curse your existence.”

Kaedan growled low in his chest, like something animal.

Rhaelle lifted her hand.

Illusion shards swirled around her fingertips — jagged, shimmering fragments of light that twisted into thin silver blades.

“You think your bond evolution surprised us?” she cooed. “Oh, little Sunborn. We planned for it.”

The ground beneath them vibrated.

Kaedan snarled, “What did you do?”

“What we always do,” Rhaelle hissed. “Study. Predict. Weaponize.”

She flicked her fingers—

And the air exploded.

Blades became dozens.

Dozens became hundreds.

A hail of razor-sharp mirror-shards screamed through the air like a silver storm.

“ARAX—!”

Kaedan lunged, but Ariaxa was faster.

She threw herself in front of him, sunlight bursting from her palms to form a half-shield. The shards hit the barrier like rain on molten glass, ricocheting in blinding arcs.

But her shield wasn’t perfect—

Several shards pierced her arm, her side, her thigh.

Each cut burned like ice dipped in poison.

Kaedan roared — the kind of sound that made the Night Guard whip their heads around in fear.

“DON’T TOUCH HER!”

He launched himself at Rhaelle so fast the ground cracked where he’d been standing. Shadows flared from his hands, forming serrated tendrils of jagged darkness.

Rhaelle laughed.

“Yes,” she hissed. “Come break yourself.”

She stepped backward—

And the illusions surged.

Mirror after mirror flashed into existence.

Reflections of Kaedan leapt from them — dozens of him — distorted, monstrous, snarling, each image a twisted version of him as child and tyrant both.

But they didn’t attack him.

They haunted him.

One illusion showed him chained in Elyndor’s darkness, screaming as lashes carved lines into his back.

Another showed him in the harem, slaves kneeling as he snarled commands he’d been forced to copy from his father.

A third showed him kneeling beside a bed where Theralyne lay pale and dying.

Each illusion whispered in his voice.

“You failed.”

“You killed.”

“You are the curse.”

“You destroy everything you touch.”

Kaedan stumbled, breath gone, rage faltering.

Ariaxa’s blood went cold.

“No,” she whispered. “Don’t look at them.”

But he couldn’t look away.

Rhaelle’s laughter crackled through the battlefield.

“You see, Sun Queen? Every bond has a fracture. And every broken man has a breaking point.”

Kaedan’s eyes darted wildly to each illusion — pain, fury, shame, grief flashing across his gaze with raw brutality.

Riven lunged into the fray, cutting down a corrupted mage who threatened Ariaxa’s flank.

“Kaedan—FOCUS!” he yelled, slicing through one illusion only for it to reform instantly behind him.

But Kaedan wasn’t listening.

Rhaelle stepped closer, her illusions multiplying. Each mirror rippled with scenes from his past, from the horrors he’d survived, each one designed to slice through his mind like a blade.

“You hide behind your curse,” she taunted. “Pretend it holds you back from loving her. But we both know the truth.”

Kaedan’s aura flickered, his breathing ragged.

“You’re afraid,” Rhaelle whispered. “Afraid she’ll see the monster. Afraid she’ll see the boy. Afraid she’ll leave you for the light she was born to lead.”

“I said—STOP!” Ariaxa screamed, firing a beam of light at the nearest illusion.

It shattered—

But two more took its place.

Each one more vicious than the last.

One showed Kaedan kneeling in chains, begging Ariaxa not to die.

One showed him losing control, killing someone he loved.

One showed Theralyne dying all over again.

Rhaelle snapped her fingers.

Every illusion froze—

Then shifted.

Refocused.

Reformed.

Into one mirrored image.

Ariaxa’s blood turned to ash.

Because the final illusion…

showed her.

Lying on the ground.

Eyes open and lifeless.

Blood pooling beneath her crown-mark.

Kaedan kneeling over her body, screaming her name.

Kaedan’s world stopped.

Literally.

Magic stuttered.

Shadows collapsed inward.

His breath vanished.

His knees nearly buckled.

“No,” he whispered.

The illusion didn’t fade.

It sharpened.

Ariaxa tried to step toward him—

But the bond seized her ribs like a fist, choking her breath.

She reached out anyway.

“Kaedan—look at me—NOT the illusion—”

But he didn’t move.

Couldn’t.

There was nothing in his eyes.

Nothing but the terror the curse had carved into his soul:

Losing her.

“Kaedan,” Riven snarled, trying to break through the illusions as more surrounded them. “Kaedan, MOVE—”

But the Emperor didn’t hear him.

Didn’t hear anything.

His gaze was locked entirely, helplessly, on the illusion of Ariaxa dead at his feet.

And in that moment—

Rhaelle smiled.

“Now,” she whispered, lifting her hands, shadows curling around her fingers. “He breaks.”
