Xavier smirked wickedly, "My attitude only improved because you were upset, not because of that pervy little doctor. If you make me angry, I'll buy out this broken hospital and make sure that kid loses his job!"
"You're getting more ridiculous with every word!"
His childish behavior resurfaced, but fortunately, Serena ignored him and plopped back down on the sofa, refusing to speak.
Xavier cautiously studied her, trying to figure out how to make amends, when his phone rang
Irritated, he grabbed his phone from the bedside table, briefly glanced at the screen, and impatiently asked, "What's going on? Don't you know I'm sick and in the hospital, needing rest? Why are you calling me?!"
On the other end of the line, a respectful voice came through, "Sir, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were unwell. Are you at the Blaze's exclusive clinic? I'll come to visit you right now."
"I'm not at the exclusive clinic! I'm in another hospital, so don't bother coming!"
"Not at the exclusive clinic?! Then... where are you?!" The voice on the other end was filled with concern. "Sir, the best medical team in Vernon is at the Blaze's exclusive clinic. If you're feeling unwell, that's the best place for you!"
"Stop talking nonsense! When did my affairs become your concern?!" Xavier coldly interrupted, "Do you have something important to say or not?!"
The person on the other end replied humbly, "Oh, I called to report on the company's matters."
"Company matters? I'm not interested. Just report to my dad directly."
"It was Mr. Henry's special instruction for me to report to you. He wants you to take the lead on this investment project!"
"...," Xavier clicked his tongue, casually brushing it off, "Fine, fine, I got it. I'm not feeling well right now, so I'm not in the mood to deal with the project. I'll handle it when I feel better."
"Yes, yes, of course! Please rest easy. If you need anything, just let us know."
"Stop being so long-winded!" With that, Xavier hung up the phone.
He then reported to Serena, "The head of the Blaze Investment and Development Department is named Ben. He's a spy my dad assigned to keep an eye on me."
Although Serena couldn't hear the other side of the conversation, she heard everything Xavier said.
She glanced up, casually saying, "They care so much about you. Why don't you appreciate it? I almost forgot that your family has an exclusive clinic. I heard that Uncle Blaze paid a lot to bring in the top medical team from Lystra, even inviting foreign medical authorities to make regular visits. It was my oversight bringing you to such a simple public hospital."
Xavier quickly forced a smile, "Serena, what are you saying? I like it here. It was the right choice for you to bring me here. The doctors and nurses at my family's crappy clinic are about the same, not much better than here."
"Really?" Serena gave him a sidelong glance. "Didn't you just complain about the on-duty doctor here?"
"Uh... he doesn't represent the whole hospital..."
"Stop, stop, stop!" Serena raised her hand, stopping his nonsense. "I think this small hospital can't handle you. Why don't you go back to the exclusive clinic? The nurses there are gentle and pretty, much more professional than my rookie nurse self. I'm sure you'll be cured instantly there."
Xavier laughed awkwardly, "What are you saying? Which nurse could be more beautiful than you? You're more beautiful than Angel and more ethereal than Venus! Only you can cure me, the rest would just make things worse."
Serena still wouldn't give in and turned her face away, showing she wasn't in the mood to deal with him.
Xavier frowned, pleading pitifully, "Alright, alright, Serena, I was wrong! Don't hold it against me!"
Serena glanced at him, her heart softening slightly. "So, next time, will you still act unreasonable?"
"No, no, no! I won't!"
"That's more like it!" Serena's tone softened. "Stay put. I'm going out to buy some toiletries."
"Okay!" Xavier obediently agreed, "Hurry back."
"Got it!"
...
As Serena grabbed her handbag and walked toward the convenience store, a familiar voice suddenly sounded from behind, "Mrs. Beckett?!"
She instinctively turned around, only to bump into Secretary Zayn's surprised face.
She pursed her lips and forced a smile, "Zayn, what are you doing here?"
Secretary Zayn greeted her enthusiastically, "My mom has a heart condition, and her medicine ran out, so I came to the hospital to get a prescription."
"Oh!" Serena nodded briefly and turned to leave. "Well, go ahead. I'll be on my way."
Since Secretary Zayn was Clint's trusted aide, Serena didn't want to talk to him for too long.
"Mrs. Beckett!" Secretary Zayn called after her, asking with concern, "How come you're at the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?!"
Serena reluctantly stopped and said, "Don't call me Mrs. Beckett anymore. I'm no longer married to your boss."
Secretary Zayn's eyes flickered. After a moment of hesitation, he said meekly, "Well... I'm used to calling you that. Mrs... Miss Knowles. Actually, About you and Mr. Beckett..."
Serena quickly raised her hand to stop him, "I don't want to hear about him. We're not involved anymore, and I don't care about his business."
"But... Mr. Beckett..."
"If there's anything, go talk to Poppy. She's the one handling Clint's matters, not me."
With that, Serena turned decisively and left, her steps firm and unwavering.
Secretary Zayn watched her retreating figure, hesitated for a while, then took out his phone and made a call.
After shopping around for a while, Serena bought some basic toiletries. After paying, she stepped outside when her phone in her bag rang.
She put down the things in her hands and took out her phone.
She glanced at the caller ID, and her expression darkened.
After a moment of hesitation, she gritted her teeth and answered, "Mr. Beckett, what is it?"
Clint's voice was low, emotionless, "You went to the hospital?"
"Heh, Secretary Zayn is such a good subordinate. He ran into me just now, and now you know about it," Serena sneered, "Or is it that your ability are so great, all your subordinates are so loyal to you?"
Clint didn't explain himself and just asked, "Do you feel unwell? Is it serious?"
"My business doesn't concern you! You should take care of yourself and Poppy!"
Serena checked the time. She had been out for nearly half an hour, and with Xavier's arrogant attitude, he was probably getting impatient by now.
She hurriedly said, "I have to go. I'll hang up now!"
"Serena!" Clint quickly called out to her, "If you need anything, I can come over immediately!"
