My Best Friend's Dad

Can He Handle It?

Ch. 119 / 161 Apr 20, 2026

Elona’s POV

I turned on my side, flickering my eyes open, and I just watched Tristan fast asleep, his head turned away from me. He was still here with me. My heart fluttered despite the emotions that we felt last night. I decided to get up and make him coffee. I slipped on my tank top, but I still had my pajama shorts on, and then I went to the kitchen.

I found Spooky sitting at the kitchen counter, eating cereal and scrolling through his phone. “Good morning,” I said as I took a mug from the top cupboard.

“Good morning to you too,” he replied as I looked at him. He was smirking at me before he took a sip of his coffee before diving back to eating his cereal.

I gave him a shy smile. “What?” I asked.

“I believe that’s Tristan’s car out front,” he stated.

“What time did you get in?” I asked as I continued to make Tristan’s coffee.

“Not too late,” he shrugged. “Sooo...”

“Yes, Tristan spent the night here,” I placed the mug of coffee on the kitchen counter. Spooky’s smile was huge.

“I’m glad I went out then. I hope you both worked things out because I couldn’t see him... looking sad. I think the second chance will do you both good.”

“Well, we need to talk more, but we got one massive topic out of the way, and it went better than what I thought,” I sat on a bar stool across from him.

“Then I’m glad about it.”

“Good morning,” I looked over Spooky’s shoulder to see Tristan walking towards us.

“I’m glad you’re here,” Spooky replied, and then he stood up, “I have to go. Your assistant wants to meet up with me this morning,” he grabbed his backpack from the sofa, “See you later,” he said before he walked out the front door.

I looked up at Tristan, who was still standing across from me, the kitchen counter between us. He still had pain in his eyes. I moved the mug towards him, “I made you coffee. I hope you don’t mind,” I said as he took a seat.

“Thank you.”

“I hope you slept well?” I tried to make conversation, although he didn’t seem to be into the conversation, he was just staring at his coffee.

“I managed to sleep, but I struggled with everything that was going through my mind. I just found out yesterday that we had lost a baby, and that is a lot to take in,” he finally looked up at me. “I don’t know how to deal with it right now. I don’t know if I should go to work and bury myself into my company because that is what took my mind off Estelle and the baby Estelle and I lost. It’s just a lot for me at this point, and I want to be here with you because I didn’t get to be with you when you found out for the first time.”

“I want you to be here too. I’ve forgiven you, and I do want you.”

“I want you and need you. If you want to give me a second chance, I will cherish the second chance more than anything. I’m trying to work on myself so that I can handle things better,” he sucked in a breath.

“I was afraid that you would always throw things back into my face when you would explode into anger. I simply didn’t want that in my life and to feel that fear. I didn’t want to go through that again. But last night, you didn’t throw it back into my face because this is a very difficult topic and that just proved to me that you can work on yourself to become a better man. I know we are not perfect, we are all human beings, but this is a start,” I gave a reassuring smile.

“I’m trying,” he gave a small smile in return.

“I think we can take it slow. We will get through this together,” I told him.

He nodded as he reached across the counter and took my hand in his, bringing it towards his lips, and he placed a soft kiss onto the back of my hand before pulling away again.

“I promise not to screw this up again. I give you permission to call me as ass when I’m being one.”

“Okay. So, aren’t you going to work today?” I asked as I pulled my hand back from out of his gentle grasp.

“I took off from work to go and work on myself in Southampton. I ran into Moreen, and she encouraged me to come back and fight for you. I literally came back, and I was going to try and find you at the coffee shop as Eric had informed me that you were there with your father. I didn’t see you, so I assumed that I missed you, but that was when I ran into an old friend of mine, who is your current doctor. I spoke about you, and he assumed that I knew about the miscarriage, and he apologized for the loss, and that’s how I found out. It was such a difficult thing to absorb. I went straight home to process this news, and then I had to see you. So here I am,” he said with so much pain in his voice.

“I’m sorry you had to find out that way.”

“It’s okay, at least I know about it now, and I get to have a second chance with you,” he gave me a small smile.

“I do have to go to VFS today. It’s my first day, if I can say that. I’m nervous, and I’m excited, but if you need me, please call me. I don’t want you to slip into grief all by yourself,” I was concerned about him, though, especially what Cris used to tell me about how he grieved. He literally stayed out of the biggest part of his house that had memories of Aunt Estelle, and I don’t want that for him now, either.

“I’m already grieving. Please let me know how it goes. I can always get you at VFS?” he offered.

“I will be fine. I will text you if I need a lift. I have to get ready,” I stood up from the bar stool, and so did he.

“I will head home, and I will see you later,” he walked around the kitchen counter, and then he wrapped his arms around me and placed a kiss on the top of my head.

“See you later,” I said, pulling away, and then he grabbed what he needed and left.

Nothing washes this feeling I have that he was still not okay. Maybe I should text Cris or maybe Spooky, but the concern is there, and I really don’t know if he can handle this grief.
