Kacie
Jamie and Jake come out of the room and when they close the door they don’t see me. Jamie turns to Jake, “I don’t understand why he’s sending us out,” Jamie growls in frustration.
“I don’t know what he’s thinking but I don’t think leaving them alone in there is a good idea. I’ve said my piece but Alpha has sent us out. It doesn’t matter if he’s my friend, and your brother, above all else he is our Alpha and what he commands is law,” Jake says.
The turn and head down the hall and I come out of my hiding spot. Jamie steps closer to Jake, “Our Alpha, our pack has a number of enemies. The rogues could be working with anyone,” she whispers low.
Jake nods, “Yes, but the last thing we need is to make an enemy out of a witch,” he says witch with absolute disgust.
Jamie flinches at the word. “A witch… What of the destined word she used? Do you believe any of the crap she was talking about in there? Do you think she could really be his mate too?” Jamie asks. Jake shushes them before they exit the hallway.
I don’t catch his answer as they’re too far away. “Mate too?” Athena seethes.
“What the fuck,” Athena asks aloud.
“I know, I know…. this whole situation is…” I trail off.
The past couple of days have been amazing. I went to bed with him, I woke up to him, I gave myself to him. He’s my mate for Goddess sake. If I can’t trust him who can I trust?
“You can trust me, always,” Athena tells me.
“And we can trust him, he’s our mate. We just need to talk about what’s going on.” And I don’t know who she’s trying to convince.
I haven’t heard from him, maybe after we talk, we can sort all of this out. I’m out of sorts…. why did he send them out? Why is he alone in there with her? Does he…
Maybe… maybe…
I shake that thought away and head over to the door so I can continue to listen. A female voice speaks on the other side and I know it’s her, it’s Clara.
“Why do you think I’m not it?” Clara’s calm voice asks. Even her voice is beautiful, I groan. I wonder what she looks like. Is she as pretty as she sounds? Has he compared us? Has he compared our looks or our personalities?
“Don’t you feel that?” She murmurs and I can feel my stomach churn as I listen to the seduction oozing from her voice.
“I don’t know what’s going on but I think the rogue attacks have something to do with Alpha Ken, Kacie,” Athena tells me quietly even though we both know they can’t hear her.
I nod in agreeance. “I know,” I whisper.
“The first person that came to mind when they talked about someone he could have pissed off recently was Alpha,” I say and fail at hiding the fear that spreads out and suffocates me.
It took a few minutes for Jake and Jamie to get out of sight and I don’t want to miss any more of their conversation.
If they’d seen me I know I would have had to beg them not to mind link him. I just need to talk to him myself… hear for myself what’s going on in that room with just the two of them.
I still and hold my breath as my ear leans against the door.
“I—” Viktor starts but doesn’t finish.
The silence that follows on the other side of the door is deafening, suffocating. What’s going on? Why is it quiet? Why aren’t they talking?
Doubt is a fat snake circling close around me. I don’t know what’s going on, I can’t hear anything but my heart is twisted up into little knots and my imagination is running away with me.
I hate this. I didn’t think I’d have to feel this way with Viktor. I’ve never felt this way with him since the day he saved me. I don’t know what to think or feel right now.
Is he cheating on me?
Athena whimpers.
“I wanted to discuss what I’m going to do with you,” Viktor’s voice finally breaks through the silence.
“Don’t discuss, show me,” she whispers breathlessly.
And if that one sentence doesn’t rip through my last bit of hope, the next one brought tears to my eyes. Her words are a nail in my coffin.
“Show me what you want to do to me Viktor. Just for tonight, no, just for this moment, please, please. Pretend that there’s no one else, that you haven’t had someone else, that she isn’t here in your packhouse. Pretend you met me first,” the voice pleads.
But it’s his silence that drives the nail home. Athena’s pain mixes with mine, our hearts breaking slowly together. “I don’t want to be here, Kacie,” she cries, “I don’t… I don’t want to hear what’s going to happen.”
The deafening silence kills me and the floodgates have broken, my tears run down my cheeks and drip onto the floor. My heart breaks into a million pieces as I listen to the silence on the other side of the door.
She’s almost convinced me to turn around and leave when Viktor’s voice comes through the door.
“I won’t be touching you, Clara, I don’t know who you are. I may feel the mate bond with you but I have a woman. She’s warming my bed right now and I won’t betray her. I love her and her alone. She owns my body and what’s left of my soul. The Goddess gifted her to me and if she was ready I would have marked her already. Until I confirm who you really are or aren’t, I won’t be touching you. This could be a facade or a spell but what I do know is that there are no known wolves with two Goddess-given mates.”
