Piper’s POV
“Ah, Piper. Please have a seat. I’ll put on my clothes first. Wait a minute,” he said as he grabbed a shirt and trousers from the bed, then he hurried into the bathroom.
I didn’t dare to look at him, so all I did while waiting for him to finish getting dressed was to keep my head down and my eyes on the floor.
He made my face flush red and my heart beat faster. He’s such a tease!
“Piper, why are you being so quiet? Oh, Jessie wants to come with you to watch the competition at your son’s school. Is that okay?” he asked from inside the bathroom.
Hearing him ask me something, I spontaneously looked up and stared at the bathroom door, which wasn’t closed. How could that be? Did he do it on purpose? But why would he do that?
“It’s not that I mind if Jessie comes with me, it’s just that,” I replied.
It was just that her arrival would cause a stir and there would be a lot of questions asked of me. I wasn’t ready because I still had gotten no information. However, I couldn’t refuse Jessie. If I refuse her, she will be sad. But Mom will also come with me. If she sees Jessie, I can’t imagine what will happen.
“It’s just what? Why are you silent? Until when are you going to shut up and act like everything is normal and there’s nothing weird between our kids?” he asked as he folded his sleeves up and looked at my face, which was downcast, staring at the floor.
Jay’s POV
I sat in front of her and stared at her. She was silent and unmoving. There was something she knew, but she was hiding from me.
“Piper, why are you silent? Look at my face,” I pleaded as I touched the back of her hand.
Not long after, she looked up and stared at me. “I’m sorry, maybe I should have asked you from the first day I started working in this house. But I was too scared, so I just kept quiet while determined to find out on my own with no one’s help. However, when Ken came to pick me up, I was very surprised that he would know that my son had a similar face to Jessie. But, I couldn’t control what had happened. Ken also asked me to ask for your help to investigate this oddity.”
She again paused and lowered her face. “But then again, I’m too scared to talk about this with you. Because I don’t know who Jensen’s father is. I had a lover, but Jensen is not his son. My son was born because of a one-night stand with a strange man that I don’t know and don’t remember at all. That incident ruined my life and my mother’s life.”
And her tears flowed down her cute face. I spontaneously touched the back of her hand. “So you don’t remember the face of the man you were with that night?”
She nodded. Then, I passed a tissue box in front of her. She took a few pieces and wiped her wet eyes.
“That man was me, Piper,” I muttered to myself. I wish I could say it so easily. Please be patient until I find out the truth and make amends for all the wrongs I did to you seven years ago. I promise you. Once this is all over, I won’t let you suffer anymore.
“I’m sorry,” I said spontaneously.
“Umm, why are you apologizing to me?” she asked as she pulled her hand from mine.
“Ah, it’s okay. I’m sorry that I made you tell me something painful. But your son must be proud to have a mother like you. Do you ever regret giving birth to Jensen? Did I pronounce your son’s name correctly?” I asked as I smiled at her.
She smiled as she wiped her eyes. “Yes, you pronounced his name correctly. I have never regretted giving birth to them. They are a gift from God to me.”
“Them? What do you mean?” I asked, feigning ignorance.
“I gave birth to twins, a boy, and a girl. However, a day after giving birth, my daughter,” she replied, and she went back to crying.
“Ah, you don’t have to tell me if it’s too painful for you. You can come back and tell me another time,” I said.
“No, I will tell you now because I also have some questions for you,” she replied.
“Oh, then I’m ready to listen.”
“My baby girl died one day after she was born. You must remember when I cried on my first day of work. It was because I saw Jessie’s face, which looked so much like Jensen’s. I felt like my daughter was standing in front of me. I wondered what all this meant. What exactly was going on? I clearly remembered the day I buried her body. Then whose baby did I bury that day?” she replied.
“You have the same questions and curiosity as me. When Ken told me that, I immediately asked Nick, my assistant, to look into this. He is still investigating. Will you wait patiently until all the truth is revealed?” I asked.
She nodded twice.
“Ok, I promise you that once I get all the information, I will tell you. But, please keep this a secret from anyone. And for today, please take care of Jessie. If Jensen and your mom ask, you better explain to them everything you know. After all, it would be better if they knew earlier.”
“Yes, you’re right. Then, I’d better hurry before it’s too late. I’ll see if Jessie is ready,” she said as she stood up and walked towards the door.
I didn’t know what was going through my mind at that moment, but I suddenly approached and held her back from the room. She looked at me with an astonished look. “Sir, what’s wrong?”
“Ah, it’s nothing. Sorry, please come out,” I replied.
I cursed myself for acting unreasonably.
“Ok. Goodbye and I’ll look after Jessie,” she said.
“Thank you.”
Piper’s POV
I finally asked Jay what I needed to ask. I just had to wait for the results of Nick’s investigation. Hopefully, he’d bring good news. I just want to know if Jessie is my biological daughter, and if there’s a possibility that my baby was switched back then, whose baby did I name Daisy? And how did Jessie end up in Megan’s hands? Could she have played a role in all of this?
I’ll wait patiently for the truth. Nick, I’m counting on you.
Oh, wait. There was something strange about Jay earlier. Why did he apologize to me? He’s acting weird. Ah, I’d better forget it. Maybe it’s just my feelings.
After picking up Jessie and eating breakfast together, we rushed to Jensen’s school. I was ready to explain everything to them. Mom, Jessie, and Jensen must be surprised. Hopefully, they would accept my explanation.
Finally, we arrived at the entrance of Jensen’s school. The competition hadn’t started yet. My cell phone rang, then I picked up the incoming call from Mom.
“Piper, where are you?” Mom asked.
“I’m in front of the main entrance. Where are you guys?” I asked, looking around me.
“We’re walking towards you. Who’s the girl with you?” Mom asked.
