From Luna to Alpha

Chapter 27

Ch. 27 / 30 Nov 14, 2025

The Winter Gathering grounds spread before us like a battlefield waiting to happen. Ancient trees surround the massive clearing, their bare branches reaching toward the gray sky. Multiple packs have already arrived, their camps arranged in careful sections around the central meeting area. Tension hangs in the air like smoke.

"Stay close," I tell my wolves. "No matter what happens."

Thirty-two of us walk into that clearing. Not an army. Not even close to Varek's numbers. But we walk with purpose. With unity. With something Varek's hired warriors will never have.

We have truth on our side.

Hardik flanks me on the left, Riven on the right. Kira and Thorne follow directly behind. The rest of our loyalists move as one unit, heads high despite the hundreds of eyes watching our approach.

Varek's pack occupies the largest section of the gathering grounds. At least fifty warriors surround him, positioned strategically around the perimeter. Hired mercenaries, most of them. I recognize maybe ten actual Obsidian Pines wolves among them.

He stands in the center of it all, looking every bit the confident Alpha. His gray fur is immaculate. His stance relaxed. Surrounded by power and convinced of his invincibility.

Then he sees me.

His expression shifts. Just for a moment. Shock flickers across his face before he buries it under arrogance.

"The traitor's mate dares show her face," Varek announces. His voice carries across the clearing, loud enough for every pack to hear. "How bold of you."

I keep walking. Keep my pace steady. When I reach the center of the gathering grounds, I stop ten paces from him.

"I'm not here as anyone's mate," I say. My voice doesn't shake. Doesn't waver. "I'm here as Alpha of the Obsidian Pines. And I'm here to expose the truth about how you took power."

Murmurs ripple through the assembled packs. Wolves exchange glances. Some lean forward with interest.

Alpha Ronan stands. The leader of River Stone pack is a massive wolf with silver streaking through his dark fur. His pack's warriors form a tight formation behind him.

"I'd like to hear what she has to say," Ronan says. His voice cuts through the murmurs like a blade. "Let her speak."

Other Alphas voice agreement. One by one, they stand. Dawn Valley's new Alpha. Crescent Ridge's leader. Even some of the neutral packs.

Varek's jaw clenches. Tradition binds him now. Refusing to let me speak would make him look weak in front of every Alpha present. Refusing would prove he has something to hide.

"Speak then," he says through gritted teeth. "Let's hear these accusations."

I gesture to Hardik. He moves forward, carrying the documents we've compiled. Testimony from witnesses. Records of Varek's actions. Evidence we've spent weeks gathering.

"Three months ago, Varek staged a coup," I begin. My voice carries clearly across the clearing. "He murdered my mate, Sorin, who was named Alpha alongside me by Hardik himself. Varek killed him because Sorin dared to give a female wolf equal authority. Because my mate believed strength mattered more than gender."

"That's not why," Varek interrupts. His voice is sharp. Defensive. "Your mate broke tradition. He insulted everything our ancestors built. He spat on centuries of law."

"He gave me respect," I shoot back. "He gave me what I earned through my strength and skill. Through every hunt, every victory, every battle I fought for our pack. But you couldn't allow that, could you? You needed an excuse to take power. So you wrapped your ambition in tradition and called it righteousness."

I turn to address the gathered Alphas directly.

"That same night, Varek tried to have me killed. I escaped. I survived. And while I was running for my life, I discovered something interesting." I pull out the first document. "Varek didn't stop with Obsidian Pines. Three months ago, he attacked Dawn Valley pack. Unprovoked. No warning. He murdered their Alpha and forcibly took over their territory."

The new Dawn Valley Alpha stands. A young wolf, barely in his twenties. His face is hard.

"It's true," he confirms. "Varek's warriors came in the night. They killed my father while he slept. Killed our Luna. Killed anyone who resisted. The survivors were given a choice. Submit or die."

Gasps echo through the clearing. Even the neutral packs look shocked.

"That's a lie," Varek snarls. "Dawn Valley attacked us first. We defended ourselves."

"With fifty warriors?" I ask. "Against a pack of thirty? That's defense?"

I gesture to Thorne. He steps forward with another witness. A middle-aged wolf who'd fled Varek's rule.

"Tell them what you saw," I say.

The wolf's voice shakes but holds steady. "I was there. I saw everything. Varek ordered the attack. He wanted their territory. Their resources. He didn't care about tradition or defense. He just wanted power."

More witnesses step forward. One by one, they testify. Each one tells the same story. Varek ruling through fear. Arbitrary executions for the smallest infractions. Wolves killed for speaking against him. For questioning his orders. Families torn apart because one member dared to show loyalty to the old ways.

The evidence piles up. Damning. Undeniable. Impossible to ignore.

Alpha Ronan's expression grows darker with each testimony. Other Alphas whisper among themselves. The neutral packs no longer look neutral.

"This is enough," Ronan finally says. "Varek, I'm calling for an investigation by the Alpha council. You will submit to questioning. You will answer for these accusations."

"I submit to no one!" Varek roars.

The council goes silent.

Every Alpha stares at him. Even his own warriors look uncertain.

Varek's face twists with rage. His carefully constructed image cracks. "I built this pack. I restored order. I did what needed to be done. And I answer to no one. Not you. Not the council. No one."

He's just declared himself above the law. In front of every witness. In front of every Alpha in the region.

Ronan's voice is ice. "Then you've just proven everything she said is true."

Varek's hand moves. A signal to his warriors.

"Kill them all."
