From Luna to Alpha

Chapter 23

Ch. 23 / 30 Nov 14, 2025

One week later, we stand in our new camp near the twin peaks. The relocation was successful. We moved in three groups over five days, covering our trail carefully.

Hardik has called another council to finalize the Winter Gathering strategy. Wolves file into the main cave, their faces less anxious than before.

I stand at the head of the table. Documents are spread before me, intelligence gathered from contacts inside Varek's pack. My hands rest flat on the surface.I’m prepared.

"I've spent the last week addressing concerns about the Winter Gathering strategy," I begin. "I have testimony from multiple wolves who fled Varek's rule, documenting his crimes and the pack's deteriorating morale."

I slide several documents across the table. Hardik picks up the first one. His eyebrows rise slightly.

"This is from Mira, formerly of Varek's inner circle," I continue. "She witnessed him execute three wolves for questioning his authority. She's willing to testify publicly."

"Where is she now?" one of the senior loyalists asks.

"Safe in neutral territory. Along with five other families who escaped using Gareth's caravan last week." I meet his eyes. "They're all prepared to speak at the Gathering if we need them."

Kira leans forward. "You actually got them out? All of them?"

"All of them," I confirm. "Gareth proved as reliable as Thorne promised. He'll continue running evacuations until the Gathering."

Murmurs of approval ripple through the council.

"What about support from other packs?" Hardik asks.

"I have news." I pull out another document. "Alpha Ronan of the River Stone pack has expressed interest in hearing our case."

The council falls silent. Alpha Ronan is powerful. Respected.

"What does he want in return?" The question comes from the skeptical senior loyalist.

"Access to our eastern hunting grounds," I say. "For ten years."

The cave erupts. Wolves talk over each other. Protesting.

"That's a significant concession," Hardik says, his voice cutting through the noise.

"We need this," I counter. "What good are hunting grounds if Varek hunts us down one by one?"

The protests quiet. Wolves exchange glances.

"Alpha Ronan commands respect among the other packs," I continue. "If he publicly supports our case, others will follow. His backing could mean the difference between success and failure at the Gathering."

"And if we refuse his terms?" someone asks.

"Then we go to the Gathering without his support. We present our case alone. We hope it's enough." I let that sink in. "Or we give him the hunting grounds for ten years and gain a powerful ally. The choice seems clear to me."

Riven speaks up. "Ten years is temporary. We can rebuild our resources. We can't rebuild dead wolves."

Kira nods. "Arida's right. This is about survival first. Everything else comes after."

The mood shifts. Wolves start nodding.

"I agree," Hardik says. "We need allies at the Gathering."

"There's more," I say. "I've been coordinating with contacts in three other packs. Dawn Valley, Crescent Ridge, and Iron Falls. All three have expressed concerns about Varek's rule and how it affects regional stability."

I spread out more documents. "These are statements from their representatives. They're willing to listen to our case. Some are even willing to speak in our favor if the evidence is strong enough."

Thorne picks up one of the statements. "This is from Dawn Valley's Beta. He says Varek's aggression threatens their borders."

"Exactly." I move around the table. "Varek isn't just our problem. His actions affect everyone. The more we can show how his rule destabilizes the entire region, the more support we'll gain."

"That's good work," Hardik says. "Very good work."

The senior loyalist who's opposed me from the beginning rises slowly. All eyes turn to him.

He looks at me directly. "I'll follow you."

The cave goes quiet.

"Not because Hardik says to," he continues. "But because you've proven you're worth following. You've thought through every detail. You've protected those who can't protect themselves. You've built alliances." He pauses. "This is real leadership."

The words hit harder than any praise from Hadik or Riven.

"Thank you," I say simply.

He nods and sits back down.

Hardik stands, drawing everyone's attention.

"Arida has done something I didn't think possible. In one week, she's transformed our position from desperate refugees to legitimate challengers." He looks at me. "I was right to step aside. You're the Alpha we need."

The council voices their agreement. Louder this time.

"We have two months until the Winter Gathering," I say. "And we're not just going there to accuse Varek. We're going there to win."

"What's our next step?" Kira asks.

"I'm meeting with Alpha Ronan's representative in two weeks to finalize the hunting ground agreement," I reply. "Thorne, I need you to coordinate with Gareth on the remaining evacuations. Dane, work with our contacts in the other packs. Keep building those relationships."

"What about me?" Kira asks.

"You're with me at the Ronan meeting," I say. "I need someone I trust watching my back."

She nods, a hint of a smile crossing her face.

"Any other questions?" I look around the table.

Silence. But it's a good silence. Not doubt or fear. Just wolves ready to work.

"Then let's get to it," I say.

The council disperses. Wolves file out purposefully.

Riven catches my hand as the cave empties. "You were incredible."

"I was prepared," I reply.

"You were both."

"One step at a time."

"One step," he agrees. "But you're taking them in the right direction."

Hardik approaches as the last wolves leave. "I meant what I said. You're the Alpha we need."

"I'm still learning," I admit.

"We all are." He clasps my shoulder briefly. "But you're learning fast. And more importantly, you're not afraid to make the hard calls."

After he leaves, Riven and I stand alone in the cave.

"Are you ready for this?" Riven asks quietly.

I look at the documents. Think about the wolves we've evacuated. The alliances we're building. The case we're preparing.

"I have to be," I say.

"That's not what I asked."

I meet his eyes. "Yes. I'm ready."

And for the first time, I truly believe it.
