From Luna to Alpha

Chapter 20

Ch. 20 / 30 Nov 14, 2025

Five days after the scouting mission, the camp settles into normal routines. Guards rotate their shifts. Fighters train. Supplies are organized.

I'm sorting weapons when it happens.

No warning comes. Just a wet thud as the guard on the eastern perimeter drops. An arrow protrudes from his throat.

Everything freezes for one heartbeat.

Then chaos erupts.

Armed wolves pour through the eastern approach. At least twenty of them. They move with clear purpose toward the supply caves.

"They're going for our resources," Kira shouts beside me.

My mind snaps into focus. Battle instincts take over.

I scan the attack pattern. Everyone rushes to defend the supply caves. Exactly what the attackers want. Because while we're distracted, I see it. A smaller group breaking off. Flanking north.

Toward the living quarters where the elderly and injured shelter.

"Riven," I command. "Take Kira and ten fighters to hold the supply caves. Don't let them inside no matter what."

He hesitates. "What are you doing?"

"They're flanking north toward the vulnerable." My voice is steel. "I'm taking the rest to intercept them. Now go!"

"Arida—"

"Go now!"

He turns and takes Kira plus ten fighters. They race toward the supply caves.

I grab the nearest fighters. "Thorne, Dane, you're with me. Everyone else, follow me now."

We sprint through camp. My heart pounds but my mind stays clear.

We reach the northern edge just as the flanking group breaks through.

Seven of them. Armed with swords and torches.

"Form a line," I shout. "Don't let them past."

The fight erupts fast and brutal.

I meet the first attacker head on. He swings his sword. I duck and drive my claws into his side. He goes down.

Beside me, Thorne grapples with two attackers. Dane takes a hit but stays standing.

One attacker breaks through our line. He's carrying a torch. He hurls it toward the cave entrance where frightened voices echo.

I see it arc through the air.

I lunge forward. Bat it away with my arm. Pain sears my skin but I ignore it.

The torch falls short. Lands in supplies near the storage cave entrance. Dried herbs. Furs. Everything we've gathered for winter.

Flames catch and spread fast.

"The storage cave!" Dane shouts.

My mind races. The fire spreads toward our provisions. Months of work. Resources we need.

But behind me, I hear them. The elderly. The injured. Trapped with enemies between them and safety.

I can't do both. Can't save supplies and protect people.

The choice becomes instant.

"Thorne!" I shout while blocking another blade. "Get everyone out of the living quarters. Move them to the western caves."

"But the supplies—"

"Forget the supplies. Save the people. Now!"

He doesn't argue. Turns and starts evacuating.

I refocus on the fight. On keeping attackers away from the fleeing vulnerable.

An attacker comes at me with a spear. I sidestep. Grab the shaft. Twist it from his hands. Use it to knock him down.

Another tries to slip past. Dane intercepts him.

The battle feels endless. Actually, probably only minutes.

Finally, the attackers retreat. The ones still standing flee.

I turn back. The storage cave is engulfed in flames. Everything inside is lost. Herbs. Furs. Food. Months of gathering turned to ash.

But the living quarters stand empty. Everyone evacuated safely.

Hardik arrives. His face is grim as he surveys the damage.

Wolves gather. Some stare at the burning cave with anger.

"We lost everything," one loyalist says. "How are we supposed to survive winter?"

"She chose wrong," another mutters. "Should have saved the supplies."

My chest tightens. Maybe they're right.

Then an elderly female wolf steps forward. The one I helped evacuate. Her voice is strong despite her age.

"Arida's decision saved my life. Saved all our lives." She looks around. "Supplies can be regathered. We cannot be replaced."

Some wolves nod. Others look uncertain.

Hardik approaches me. His expression is unreadable.

"You made a tactical sacrifice," he says. "Traded resources for lives."

"Yes, I did."

"Some would say that's poor strategy." He pauses. "Resources win wars."

"Maybe that's true," I respond. "But I'm not willing to sacrifice innocent wolves for strategic advantage. That's Varek's way, not mine."

His expression shifts. Something like approval crosses his face.

"And that's exactly why you should be leading, not me." His voice carries across the wolves. "You saw what I missed. You made a hard choice under pressure, and you prioritized the right things. That's leadership."

Kira steps forward. "I agree with Hardik. Arida's call today was right."

Riven nods. "She split our forces perfectly. We held the supply caves. She protected the vulnerable. We didn't lose a single life."

Other wolves begin voicing agreement. Not all of them. But more than before.

"She thinks like a leader," Thorne says.

The elderly wolf speaks again. "I've lived through three Alphas. This one understands what matters."

Hardik looks around at the assembled loyalists. At the shift happening in real time.

"Then it's decided." His voice becomes formal. "Arida leads. I'll support her, advise her, but the final decisions are hers."

He turns to me. Drops to one knee.

The gesture stuns me. This powerful Alpha kneeling before me.

"I pledge my loyalty to Alpha Arida," he says.

One by one, the wolves kneel. Riven. Kira. Thorne. Dane. Even the ones who questioned my decision moments ago.

"We pledge our loyalty to Alpha Arida," they echo.

I stand there. Covered in soot and blood. My arm burned. The storage cave smoking behind me.

And all I can feel the weight of leadership settle on my shoulders.

Not crushing. Not suffocating.

It feels right.

"Stand up, all of you," I say. "We don't have time for ceremonies. We have wounded to tend and defenses to rebuild."

They rise. Look at me with something new in their eyes.

Respect. Trust. Belief.

I turn to Hardik. "I'll need your counsel. Your experience. Don't think this means you're done working."

He smiles. A real smile. "I wouldn't dream of it, Alpha."

The title settles over me like a cloak. Earned through action. Finally mine.

"Then let's get to work," I say.
