In the Montero's servant's quarters, the room was filled with the smell of freshly baked bread and the sound of hushed voices. The maids assigned to Angela were gathered around the kitchen table, talking with serious expression on their faces. The table was covered with a white cloth, and a bowl of green peas sat in the centre. The maids picked at the peas, their eyes downcast. "I'm worried about Lady Angela," one of the maids said, her voice low, she had dark hair and green eyes, the youngest amongst them. "She's not eating, and she won't get out of bed. It's been two days, she just stays in her room all day, staring at the window and crying." "She just recovered and the doctor said we need to make sure she eats well and takes her drugs, but she won't stop crying." Another maid, a tall, slender woman with a head of red curls, leaned forward. "I think she's thinking about her family," she said. "I think she misses them terribly." The other maids nodded, their faces sombre. "It's hard for her, I'm sure," the first maid said. "She must feel so alone." The youngest shook her head. “Did you guys see her body.. she had bruises and marks all over her, it must be from young master.. “Hannah!”. The three others gasped. “I think you should watch your words and select them carefully, you don't just talk everything that comes in your mind”. “Servants like us have no right to talk about the young masters, or you will be forgotten soon, you are young, don't make such mistake again”. Hannah nodded fearfully. There was a moment of silence, the only sound the crackling of the fire in the hearth. Finally, the youngest maid, Hannah spoke up again. "I think we should try to cheer her up," she said, her voice hesitant. "We could make her a cake, it's our responsibility to take care of her”. The maids all looked at each other, their eyes brightening. "That's a wonderful idea Hannah, we will be the ones punished if she continues like that" the oldest maid by name Sarah replied. “So we are doing it?" Hannah asked in excitement. The others all nodded, their faces alight with excitement. "We'll need to get the ingredients," the curly-haired maid by name Judith said, standing up. "I'll get the flour, and you can get the sugar." Sarah added and turned to the youngest maid, Hannah. "You can get the eggs." The young maid jumped up, eager to help. "I'll get the very best eggs," she promised. "And we'll make it the best cake for lady Angela”. “Yeah yeah”. The three others laughed at her childish display. Minutes later. The maids set to work, gathering the ingredients for the cake preparation. The curly-haired maid, Judith set the oven to heat, while Hannah measured out the flour. “What if she doesn't like cakes?” Sarah started a conversation and added sugar to the bowl. “I thought everyone likes cakes”. Hannah shrugged and cracked the eggs. “Well we will try and see”. Judith replied. Soon, the room was filled with the aroma of baking cake. Angela's personal assistant Devia walked into the kitchen surprised as they all worked together in perfect harmony, covered in flour. “Well, what did I miss?” They all turned and found Devia. “Devia than God you are okay!” Hannah hugged her in tears. “Well I was dragged into the dark room not into a death room”. “I see no difference”. Sarah replied sadly. Devia tried to cheer them up. “So what's going on here?” “We are making a surprise cake for Lady Angela, it was my idea”. Hannah replied in excitement. “Why did she request for it?” Devia replied. “No that's why it's a surprise, we all suggested we make her a cake.. since she had not been eating and maybe a song to cheer her up”. “Young master Antonio is losing it, if we don't get her to eat something, we will all be in trouble”. Sarah added. “Ain't you all so thoughtful”. Devia smiled weakly and joined them. As the cake baked, they cleaned the kitchen, wiping down the counters and sweeping the floor. When the cake was done, they all gathered around the table, admiring their handiwork. "Now it's time to show my icing skill". Sarah replied with an icing tube in her hand. The cake was a masterpiece, a vision of sweet perfection. The maids placed it on a silver platter, and Sarah carefully drizzled a glaze of icing sugar and vanilla over the top. Devia placed a single red rose in the centre, and Sarah lit a few candles around it. Then, the four maids all stood back, looking at their creation with pride. "It's done". Devia breathed hotly. "It's perfect, nice work Sarah" Judith added. “Do you think, Lady Angela will love it?” Hannah asked lowly. “Well, we can only hope”. Sarah replied to her. Devia sighed, removing her kitchen apron. “Come on, let's go”. They all gathered up the cake, and hurried to Angela's room. They stood at Angela's door, the cake balanced carefully in Sarah's hands. Devia knocked at the door, her heart racing, the other three were anticipating too. There was no answer. She knocked again, louder this time, still, there was no reply. They looked at each other, concerned. "Maybe she's asleep," Hannah suggested in a whisper, "Should we just leave the cake outside her door?" "No, you don't do that to the Montero's food”. Sarah scolded her with brows. "We need to make sure she sees it." Devia added and knocked a third time. “Lady Angela?”. “What's going on here?” A voice asked. The maids gasped and jumped, startled. They turned and found Antonio, he was looking like he had no sleep for three days straight. Those dark circles and hair roughed. They all bowed immediately. “We …we..made a cake for Lady Angela, we hope she would eat this time but she won't answer her door." Devia's voice trembled. Antonio gazed down at the cake. “A cake..” “Yes.. yes young master”. They all answered. Antonio remembered the twins telling him that Angela loved cakes. "Give it to me". Devia was surprised at the reply, she took the cake from Sarah and gave it to Antonio with a bow. "You may leave”. “Yes.. young master”. They all replied and hurried out of the mansion. He stepped past the maids, and opened the door, his heart suddenly racing. Weird. He had promised never to come into this room again, but what the hell is he doing here, with a cake for her? He found Angela on her bed in the same spot she was before he left the room days ago, her hair dishevelled and her eyes red from crying. Angela gave him the look that shows she didn't expect him back. Antonio avoided her eye contact, his heart tight. “You are still crying?”
