Melodic hums and enchanting vocals resonate through the air, emanating from the depths of the forest. Janie, Imogen, and I gather together, our eyes searching the surroundings in awe. 'The singing is so beautiful,' I whisper, feeling a sense of tranquillity wash over me.
Imogen looks around, her eyes squinting as she tries to locate the source of the ethereal sounds. 'Who is singing?' she asks inquisitively.
Orelious chimes in, his voice carrying a hint of wonder. 'Those are the nature nymphs,' he explains, his gaze lingering on the swaying branches.
Understanding dawns upon us, and we all respond simultaneously with a soft 'Oh.'
Janie, her curiosity piqued, scans the area with narrowed eyes. 'Why can't we see them? Some of the voices sound as though they are right before us,' she remarks with intrigue.
Xander steps forward, his tone calm and reassuring. 'They are tree-like beings but have the body of a woman and can move around anywhere within this forest. They are everywhere, surrounding us,' he reveals, his words laced with deep respect for the mystical creatures.
Concern flashes across my face as I ask, 'They aren't dangerous, are they?'
Warrick interjects. 'If we treat the forest with kindness and respect, they will treat us kindly in return. However, causing harm or disrespecting their domain can lead to consequences,' he advises, his eyes scanning the surroundings attentively.
As I stand there, deep in thought, Pixel flutters his wings and takes flight from my shoulder. A subtle sparkle, reminiscent of fairy dust, shimmers from his delicate wings—an enchanting sight I've never noticed in the daylight.
Feeling inspired, I hum a simple tune, and to my surprise, the nature nymphs respond, singing it back to me with an extravagant vocal range. The harmony of their voices is spellbinding, captivating both Janie and Imogen, who share in my astonishment. Imogen's eyes widen with delight as she exclaims, 'That was amazing! It even gave me the warm fuzzies!'
Suddenly, a chilling fog rolls in, accompanied by a swift drop in temperature. Janie swiftly arranges a small log on top of some dry leaves while Imogen gathers fuel. Imogen utters the words 'Inferno Flamo' with a flicker of magic, igniting a crackling fire that casts a warm glow upon our little campsite.
We sit in silence, basking in the mesmerising voices of the nature nymphs until their melodic chorus gradually fades away. Xander takes a moment to check on the grazing stags but notices the absence of the third. Concerned, he decides to venture further into the woods to locate it.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spot Pixel fluttering through the underbrush, his movements drawing my attention. With a sense of curiosity and the desire to protect my little pet dragon, I stand up and follow his trail.
Janie calls out with worry. 'Where are you going?'
'I'm going to see what Pixel is up to,' I reply.
'You can't wander off like that. You know Xander will be angry,' Janie warns with worry.
Warrick rises from his spot and winces, his injured ribs causing discomfort. 'I'll go with her. I wanted to show her something anyway,' he states.
Pixel perches on a nearby tree as he spots a large bug. With a burst of flames, he effortlessly roasts his dinner before devouring it with a flick of his agile tongue. I chuckle at his voracious appetite. 'You were hungry, huh?' I remark, a smile spreading across my face.
Pixel responds with a satisfied burp, releasing a plume of smoke that dissipates into the night air. I shake my head playfully at him, and he gracefully leaps from the tree, spreading his wings and circling me. The sight fills me with joy, and I spin around, laughing as he flutters through the air. As I twirl, my gaze catches Warrick leaning against a tree, silently observing me. Our lingering stares are interrupted when Pixel lands on my shoulder.
Warrick steps forward, his hand extended towards me. I glance at his outstretched hand, contemplating his offer. 'I want to show you something,' he says with anticipation.
I raise an eyebrow. 'Surely, you can show it to me without having to hold my hand?' I respond.
Warrick's smile falters slightly, and he lowers his hand. 'Okay,' he says, his eyes filled with disappointment but also understanding. 'This way,' he says, gesturing for me to follow.
I trail behind Warrick as he leads us along a path winding through the Sylvan woods. The ground is filled with magical light as we arrive at a clearing adorned with yet another abundance of glowing, transparent mushrooms in a breathtaking array of colours—reds, blues, greens, yellows, pinks, and more. Warrick comes to a halt and settles where hundreds of these colourful mushrooms surround him. He gestures for me to sit facing him. As I approach, I realise we are perched on an elevated spot, granting us a mesmerizing view of the Crystal Mines. It's the first time I've seen them at night, and their red, blue, and purple crystals tower like majestic guardians, shimmering under the moonlight.
'It's a beautiful view, isn't it?' Warrick remarks, his smile warm.
I nod, still captivated by the sight before me. 'I don't know what could be more magical than this,' I reply, my gaze fixed on the Crystal Mines.
Warrick chuckles softly. 'Well, you'll never find out if you don't sit down,' he playfully retorts.
I laugh along with him, amused, as I settle down before him. I notice that the mushroom my knee bumps into jiggles like jelly, adding a touch of whimsy to the scene.
Warrick's gaze locks with mine, his eyes filled with a tender nostalgia. 'My mother brought me here once when I was a young pup. It's one of my fondest childhood memories,' he confides. 'I was hoping to relive that moment, but with you,' he adds, with vulnerability and hope.
Curiosity piqued, I watch as Warrick plucks a glowing purple mushroom. 'Hold it gently,' he instructs. I cup it delicately as Warrick guides my touch. The mushroom's surface feels remarkably soft, reminiscent of jelly but without stickiness. Warmth spreads from his hands to mine, creating tingling sparks that dance along my skin. 'Make a wish,' he whispers, shadows playing across his face.
I glance at Pixel on my shoulder, contemplating my deepest desires as I close my eyes. 'Do I say it out loud?' I ask.
Warrick shakes his head. 'No, just think of your wish in your mind,' he replies. 'I'll think of a wish, too,' he adds, a gentle smile gracing his lips.
