Today was just that kind of day. It was the kind of day that you felt you’d remember forever, though it wasn’t necessarily a turning point, it was just a moment, a step. It was Lucas’s last day at the office.
He had been a steady presence in my life for as long as I could remember. A good friend, someone I’d leaned on when things got tough, someone who made me laugh and kept me grounded. But today, he was leaving. The news had hit me harder than I thought it would, though I had known for a while that this day would come. Lucas had been offered a big opportunity across the country, a chance to grow in his career, and he couldn’t pass it up.
He had kept it quiet for a while, not wanting to make it awkward for anyone. But today, he had finally told everyone. As soon as the news spread, there was a flurry of goodbyes, hugs, and well-wishes. But I couldn’t shake the sadness that tugged at me as I watched him pack up his things, preparing to leave.
Later that afternoon, Lucas walked over to the office with a large bag full of food—his way of treating everyone before he left. “I didn’t want to leave without doing something,” he said with a grin, though I could see the sadness in his eyes too. “I hate goodbyes, especially with friends. But this opportunity... well, it’s something I can’t turn down.”
We all sat around in a small circle, eating the food he’d brought, laughing as if things were normal. But there was an undeniable sense of finality in the air. I watched Lucas and Tristan, noticing how the two of them had become a little more comfortable with each other. The tension that had once hung between them had faded, but today, there was something different. There was a new understanding between them.
Lucas turned to me, his expression turning serious for a moment. “Mia,” he said, his voice quieter, “I just wanted to say something before I leave. You deserve love that doesn’t hurt. You deserve someone who treats you right, someone who’s there for you no matter what.”
I felt a lump forming in my throat at his words. Lucas had always cared about me. I knew that. But hearing him say it, especially now, felt like a weight settling on my chest.
“I just want you to be happy, Mia,” he continued, his eyes filled with sincerity. “I wish you nothing but the best. And Tristan…” He glanced over at Tristan, his tone softening. “You’d better not hurt her. Mia’s one of a kind.”
I watched Tristan’s eyes flicker with something like surprise. He hadn’t expected Lucas to say that. I could see the way Lucas was looking at me, though, like he was giving me one last piece of advice, a reminder of the love and safety we’d shared.
Instead of saying anything bitter, anything that would make me question my relationship with Tristan, Lucas simply said, “You’re a good man, Tristan. Just... be patient. That’s all it takes. Mia’s worth it.”
The weight of his words hit me harder than I anticipated. He wasn’t telling me that I’d regret choosing Tristan, like I had feared he might. Instead, he was giving us both the chance to work through our issues. He believed in us, even when I didn’t. And somehow, that made me feel like I could breathe a little easier.
Lucas stood up to gather his things, and I went over to him, my heart swelling with emotion. “You’re going to be great,” I told him, my voice thick with gratitude and sadness. “I’ll miss you.”
He pulled me into a tight hug, and I didn’t fight the tears that stung my eyes. It wasn’t that I loved him—no, that wasn’t it. But Lucas had been a comfort to me. He had a sense of safety, a friend who had always been there, someone who had given me reassurance when I needed it most. And now, I was letting go of that.
“I’ll miss you, too, Mia,” he whispered, his voice soft. “Promise me you’ll visit. You deserve the world, you know that?”
I nodded, choking back the tears. “I promise.”
As we pulled apart, I noticed Tristan watching us from across the room. His expression was unreadable, but I could feel the jealousy radiating off him. It was subtle, but I saw the way his jaw clenched. He was trying to play it cool, but I could tell it bothered him. I could see it in the way he avoided looking directly at me and Lucas. It wasn’t an overwhelming jealousy, but it was enough to notice.
Lucas, always the observant one, saw it too. He chuckled lightly, glancing between me and Tristan. “Relax, man. I’m not taking her from you,” he teased, flashing a grin at Tristan. “But hey, you’ve got a good one here. Don’t mess it up.”
Tristan’s eyes flickered to Lucas, a flash of something unreadable in his gaze before he quickly masked it with a sarcastic smirk. “I’m not worried about you, Lucas,” he said, his tone light, but I could tell it was a little forced.
“Good,” Lucas said, clapping him on the back. “You shouldn’t be. She’s a tough one.”
I couldn’t help but smile at Lucas’s words. His reassurance, his final words of support, meant more to me than I could express. He had been my comfort, my safe space, but it was time for me to move on. To move forward. It wasn’t because I didn’t care about him, but because I had found something different in Tristan. Something that was harder, but also more worth it.
“I’ll visit, I promise,” I repeated, hugging him one more time before he finally made his way toward the door. “Take care of yourself, okay?”
He nodded, pulling his suitcase behind him. “You, too,” he said, and with one last wave, he was gone.
I stood there for a moment, the silence in the room settling in. And then the floodgates opened. I felt the tears spill over, not because I had lost Lucas, but because I was finally letting go of the past. He had been my safety net, my source of comfort when things were too hard, but I couldn’t keep holding onto something that wasn’t meant to be.
Tristan was standing there now, just a few feet away, watching me. I could see the jealousy still lingering in his eyes, but there was something else there too—something softer, something that said he wanted to be the one I relied on now.
I wiped my eyes quickly, trying to regain some composure, but Tristan was already moving toward me. He pulled me into his arms, his hands steady as he wrapped them around me, holding me tight.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he murmured against my hair, his voice soft. “I promise.”
I closed my eyes, letting myself lean into him. The tears were still there, but this time, they were different. They were no longer about uncertainty or fear. They were about the release of the weight I had been carrying for so long.
And Tristan—he wasn’t going anywhere. He was here, and he was finally ready to let me in.
