Chapter 22: The Spark of Change

Ch. 22 / 30 May 22, 2025

It was hard not to feel excited when I saw the email pairing Tristan and me together for the new campaign. For weeks, we had been avoiding working on the same projects, a quiet distance that we’d both settled into. But now, here we were again, thrown together like we had been in the past—no more hiding behind walls or dodging each other. We were back to the same dynamic, the same old rhythm, but with a strange undercurrent of change.

It had been too long. Too long since we had worked side by side, since we had fed off each other’s ideas and energy. Too long since I’d felt that competitive spark, that feeling of needing to impress him, to show him that I was more than capable. And honestly, I had missed it. I had missed him.

The first time we met to discuss the campaign, I couldn’t help but smile when I saw Tristan walking into the conference room. He had that familiar, confident stride, but today it was different, more subdued, almost... unsure. He wasn’t the same man who had avoided me for weeks. I could see the shift in him, the change that had been brewing under the surface.

As he settled across from me, I tried to gauge what kind of Tristan I would get today. The distant, cold version? Or the one who had started to show cracks in his armor?

“Alright,” I said, my voice light and a little teasing as I glanced at the campaign brief in front of me. “Looks like we’re a team again. I’m sure you’re glad to be stuck with me, huh?”

Tristan gave me a half-smile, something real, but still a little guarded. “You’re the last person I’d be stuck with,” he replied, his voice still laced with that familiar dry humor, but I could see it in his eyes. There was something softer there now. A quiet acknowledgment.

“I’m serious though,” I pressed, “You won’t be disappointed with my ideas. I’ve been working on some concepts that will blow them away. You’ll see.”

He leaned back in his chair, his gaze flicking over me as if he were weighing something. “I know you’re brilliant, Mia,” he said, his voice steady, “I never questioned that. Just... show me what you’ve got.”

I was about to dive into the presentation when he added, unexpectedly, “I’m glad you gave me time. I’ve been thinking a lot about things. About... us. And I want you to give me a chance. A chance to change. To actually open up.”

The words hit me in a way I hadn’t expected. I had waited for this. For him to finally admit that he wanted to change. That he wasn’t content with being emotionally distant. But hearing him say it, with such quiet honesty, made my heart race. It was everything I’d been hoping for, but I wasn’t about to let my guard down too easily.

“Change?” I repeated, my voice steady, though inside, I was struggling to keep my emotions in check. “What kind of change, Tristan? You’ve been running from this for so long. I can’t keep waiting for you to finally decide you’re ready. But if you’re serious about this, if you really want to make it work, I’ll give you that chance.”

He nodded, meeting my eyes with an intensity that felt different this time. It wasn’t just about control or dominance anymore. There was something more genuine in the way he looked at me. “I’ll show you. I’ll prove it to you.”

I wasn’t sure what to say next. I wanted to believe him. I wanted to trust that this wasn’t just another attempt at deflection, another way for him to keep me hanging on. But the truth was, I wasn’t going to get anywhere if I didn’t take a leap of faith.

So, instead of saying anything more, I dove into the work. I started presenting the ideas I’d been developing, watching Tristan’s reactions closely. He didn’t interrupt me, didn’t try to take over. He let me lead. And as I talked through the concepts, I saw him listening—really listening—in a way that he hadn’t before. It wasn’t just about his ideas anymore. He was paying attention to mine.

The next few days passed in a blur of meetings and late nights, the campaign coming together quickly, with both of us contributing our best work. But there was something else that was happening between us. The more we worked together, the more we slipped into the familiar rhythm. The teasing, the bickering, it was all there. The tension we used to have, that push and pull that made everything between us so intense, was back.

But this time, it wasn’t toxic. It was... different. The insults were still there, sharp and biting, but it wasn’t about proving who had control anymore. It was about trust, about letting each other in without fear of being hurt. We were pushing each other, challenging each other, but it felt like it was moving us closer.

One afternoon, after a particularly heated discussion about which direction to take the campaign, I found myself smiling for the first time in weeks. The old Tristan, the one who had always been an asshole, but in a way that was endearing was back.

“You’re impossible,” I said with a laugh, as he crossed his arms, giving me a look that was half-amused, half-frustrated.

“You’re not exactly a walk in the park either,” he shot back, though there was a softness to his voice now that I hadn’t noticed before. “But I guess that’s what makes it fun, right?”

There it was again—the spark. The undeniable chemistry that had always existed between us. It was still there, as strong as ever, but it felt like we were finally learning how to channel it, instead of using it as a weapon.

As the campaign progressed, I could see the walls Tristan had built around himself starting to crack. He wasn’t opening up fully yet, but he was letting me in more and more. He was trusting me with his thoughts, with his opinions, and I could see how much he valued my input. He wasn’t retreating into his old habits of pushing me away, but instead, we were both leaning into this... partnership. And for the first time, it didn’t feel like a battle of control. It felt like we were equals.

Still, there was something unspoken hanging between us. A question neither of us had dared to ask yet.

But the distance between us had lessened. With every passing day, the closeness grew. The chemistry was still there—still thick and palpable. But now, instead of trying to outwit each other or fight for control, we were letting that tension be something else. Something better.

I felt a sense of hope growing inside me, something I hadn’t allowed myself to feel in a long time. Maybe Tristan wasn’t ready to open up fully. But he was trying. And that was more than I had expected.

And for the first time, I felt like we were finally on the same page.
