Chapter 29: The Next Step

Ch. 29 / 30 May 22, 2025

I had never been the type of person to admit my feelings, let alone put myself in a position where I had to. Growing up, I had learned to shut everything off. Feelings, emotions, connections—those were things I kept hidden, buried deep inside where no one could see them. But with Mia, everything felt different. I couldn't keep it inside anymore. The walls I’d built around myself had been torn down over the last few months, and now, all I could think about was her.

She was the one person who made me feel alive—not just because of how she made me feel in the moment, but because of how she had made me want to change. She had accepted me at my worst, but more than that, she had seen through the mess, through the broken parts of me, and made me believe that I could be better. I couldn’t keep pretending I wasn’t ready to move forward.

We had spent the day together. Our first day was completely free from distractions, without any weight on our shoulders. We laughed, talked, and shared memories. It felt like the beginning of something real. Something lasting. But now that the day was winding down, I knew it was time to take the next step.

As we returned to my apartment, the tension between us was different, lighter, more relaxed. But there was something unspoken hanging in the air. We were both on the same page in a way we hadn’t been before. I could feel it in the way we looked at each other. The way our hands naturally sought each other’s, as if we had always been meant to hold hands.

We walked through the door, and the space between us seemed to close. I pulled her toward me gently, and she let me. Her eyes met mine with the same quiet intensity that I had always seen in her, but now it felt like we were finally on the same wavelength, no more walls between us.

I stood there for a moment, unsure of what to say. The words felt too big to come out right, too overwhelming for my usual guarded self. But I had to say them. She deserved to hear them. She deserved to know what I was feeling, to know what I had been keeping inside all this time.

“Mia,” I said softly, my voice breaking through the quiet of the room. She looked up at me, her eyes wide with curiosity, and I could feel my chest tighten as I spoke the words that had been building up inside me. “I... I want you to be my girlfriend. Officially. I want to choose you, Mia. I don’t want to keep pretending that I don’t feel what I feel for you.”

Her breath caught, and I watched as a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. But it wasn’t just any smile, it was one that lit up her entire face, one that made my heart skip a beat. The warmth in her eyes made me feel like I had done something right. And for the first time in my life, I realized I wanted more of that. I wanted her to be happy, and I wanted to be the one who made her feel that way.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” I continued, my voice softer now, as if I were telling her a secret that only she could understand. “But I’ve never felt like this before. About anyone. I’ve pushed so many people away in my life, and I’ve always kept my distance because I was scared. But with you... with you, it’s different. You’ve made me want to be better, Mia. And I’m asking you—no, I’m begging you—to be with me. For real. Not just... not just in the way I’ve been with you before. But fully.”

I could see the depth of the emotion in her eyes now, and it made my heart ache. She stepped closer, her hands gently resting on my chest. Her touch sent a warmth through my body, and I could feel my breath hitch. I couldn’t tell if I was nervous or just overwhelmed by everything she made me feel, but I knew that I needed to hear what she thought.

“I’ve never felt like this before either,” she said softly, her voice steady, but there was a vulnerability in it that made me want to hold her even tighter. “I’ve never been able to trust someone like this. Not fully. But with you, it feels like I can. And I want to try, Tristan. I want to try with you. Because you’re not perfect, but neither am I. We’re both works in progress, but I think that’s what makes this real. What makes it worth it.”

Her words hit me in a way I hadn’t expected. They weren’t just words—they were a promise. A promise that we were both willing to put in the effort, to fight for each other, and to build something lasting. And as I looked at her, I realized something. I realized that, for the first time in my life, I didn’t want to be afraid anymore. I wanted to face whatever came next with her by my side.

I pulled her close, pressing my forehead to hers, feeling the warmth of her skin. “I want you, Mia. I want to be everything for you. I want to be your partner. I want to be there for you, no matter what. I’ll give you the space you need, but I won’t disappear. I promise.”

She smiled at me, and for a moment, the world outside of us didn’t exist. There was just the two of us—two people who had fought their own battles and somehow found their way to each other.

“I trust you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “And I promise you, I’ll never leave you. I’ll give you space when you need it, but not for too long. You’ll never be alone again. I’m here.”

At that moment, I knew we had both made the choice to be with each other. Fully. No more games, no more pretending. This was real. This was us.

We spent the next few hours together, not talking much but feeling every second of the connection we had built. We were still discovering each other in ways that felt new and exciting, but now there was an unspoken understanding. We had laid our cards on the table, and neither of us had walked away.

When the night came, everything between us felt right. There were no more walls between us, no more hesitations. We had crossed the line, made our commitment, and we were moving forward together.

Our love wasn’t perfect. We both knew that. But it was real, and it was ours.

As I lay next to Mia later that night, my thoughts were clear. I had no more doubts about us. I had no more fears about being vulnerable. She was right. We were works in progress, but together, we could face anything.

“Mia?” I whispered, my voice barely above a breath.

“Hm?” she murmured, turning to face me.

“I love you,” I said softly, the words coming easier than I had imagined. “I love you more than I ever thought I could love someone.”

She smiled, that beautiful, real smile that always made my chest tighten. “I love you, too,” she replied, her hand resting gently on my chest.

And as I closed my eyes, holding her close, I realized that everything I had been afraid of—the fear of being vulnerable, of opening myself up to someone—had disappeared. Mia had given me something I never thought I would have. And I would never take it for granted.

We were finally here. Together. And nothing else mattered.
