chapter 20

Ch. 20 / 30 Oct 07, 2025

POV Kiara

Thomen notices the change in my expression immediately. Through our mate bond, he feels my sudden tension spike like a physical blow.

"What happened?" he asks with concern, his brown eyes searching my face.

"My mother wants to meet," I state, my voice carrying the full weight of my Alpha authority.

His expression shifts to one of understanding and immediate alertness. This isn't just a family reunion. This is a potential threat to our entire pack.

"Gather a team of our strongest and best warriors to accompany us," I command, my tone brooking no argument. "Also form patrols around the pack territory while we're away. I want our borders secured."

Thomen doesn't question my orders. He nods once and immediately departs to carry them out with military precision. His footsteps disappear quickly as he goes to organize our defenses.

I use our mental connection to reach out to Aleron. His presence in my mind feels different now after our bonding.

Stronger. More intimate.

"I need details about this meeting," I tell him through our vampire bond.

"Not like this," his voice responds in my consciousness. "We need to speak one-on-one before the formal encounter."

Despite my reservations, I agree. There are too many unknowns right now, and I need information.

While Thomen organizes our warriors, I head to our familiar training spot deep in the forest. This is where Aleron first helped me cope with my vampire nature.

Where everything between us changed.

Memories of our passionate kiss flood back as I enter the clearing. The taste of his blood. The feeling of our bond snapping into place. The overwhelming satisfaction that followed.

I force myself to push those thoughts aside and focus on the urgent situation.

Aleron emerges from the shadows with his signature grace. His dark hair catches the moonlight, and his pale skin seems to glow in the darkness.

"Hello, love," he says with that sly smile that always unsettles my carefully maintained composure.

I fight against my body's automatic response to his presence. The soulmate bond makes me want to move closer to him, but I stay where I am.

"Tell me about my mother," I demand, getting straight to business.

"The French clan arrived yesterday," Aleron confirms, his expression growing more serious. "Jacqueline Moreau leads them personally. She wants to meet her long-lost daughter."

"How do you know all this with such certainty?" I ask, suspicion creeping into my voice.

His playful smile fades completely. His ancient eyes show regret for something he's about to confess.

"I've been a member of the French clan all this time," he admits quietly.

The words hit me like a physical blow. My fragile trust in him shatters completely.

"What?" I breathe.

"I was sent here to awaken your vampire nature," he continues, his voice heavy with guilt. "On Jacqueline Moreau's orders."

My emotions explode like a volcano.

The depth of manipulation surrounding our entire relationship becomes clear. Every interaction we've had was planned. Every moment between us was orchestrated.

"So this was all just part of the plan?" I scream, shoving him hard in the chest with supernatural strength. "I hate you!"

My second push is even more violent, but Aleron stands unmoved. He accepts my rage with stoic patience, letting me hit him without fighting back.

The corner of his mouth curves in a bittersweet smile as he weathers my assault.

"And I love you," he says with quiet intensity. "I always have. And that was never part of any plan. Neither was our vampire soulmate bond. That chose us, not the other way around."

Before I can respond, Thomen's furious growl echoes through the clearing. He emerges from the shadows, having heard enough to understand the betrayal.

"You are a liar!" Thomen snarls, launching himself at Aleron with lethal intent. "She is mine!" he screams, delivering vicious blows powered by werewolf strength and possessive rage.

Aleron counters with equal ferocity. His vampire abilities match Thomen's assault perfectly.

"She belongs to me as well, puppy!" he roars back.

Their supernatural healing allows them to exchange devastating attacks without permanent damage. But the violence between them is real and terrifying.

"This can never happen!" Thomen shouts as he strikes. "There can only be one of us!"

I watch my two mates battle for exclusive claim over me, and I feel torn apart by conflicting loyalties.

Thomen has always been there for me. He's supported me through everything and accepted my new hybrid nature without question. But Aleron helped me understand and control my vampire side. He shares a bond I can't deny.

Both connections amplify my feelings until I can't bear the internal conflict anymore.

"Stop!" I scream, rushing between them with Alpha authority that freezes both combatants instantly. "That's enough! We don't have time for this!"

My commanding voice cuts through their territorial rage, forcing them apart. Their supernatural healing erases evidence of their fight within moments, but the tension between them remains.

"She's getting closer," Aleron warns, his enhanced vampire senses detecting approaching threats.

Thomen immediately takes position behind me in protective formation. Our gathered werewolf warriors form a defensive semicircle, their weapons ready.

My heightened abilities pick up an unfamiliar scent carried on the wind. Something ancient and powerful. Something that makes my vampire side recognize family.

The soft sound of multiple footsteps moving with predatory grace follows. They approach through the trees with confidence that speaks of centuries of power.

A group of elegant vampires emerges from the forest darkness.

They move with fluid grace that makes them look like they're floating rather than walking. Their pale skin glows in the moonlight, and their eyes reflect centuries of experience.

At their head walks a tall, regal woman whose bearing commands immediate respect. Her dark hair is perfectly styled despite traveling through wilderness. Her clothes are expensive and tailored.

Everything about her speaks of authority and ancient power.

When she speaks, her voice carries centuries of command and unmistakable maternal warmth.

"Hello, daughter."
