The Pleasure You Give

Chapter 8

Ch. 8 / 30 Nov 09, 2025

Tonight, I would either triumph or shatter completely.

My fingers trembled as I adjusted the sapphire necklace at my throat.

The gown Rios had selected was magnificent—midnight blue silk that pooled around my feet like liquid starlight, with intricate silver embroidery that caught the light with every movement.

He had worked his subtle magic while I dressed, his touch along my shoulders leaving traces of ethereal radiance that made my skin luminous.

"Stand straighter." Rios's voice cut through my anxious thoughts.

He moved behind me with fluid grace, adjusting the fall of my hair over one shoulder, straightening a barely perceptible wrinkle in the silk.

"I can't do this," I whispered, watching his hands in the mirror.

He said nothing, continuing his ministrations with the same detached precision he brought to everything. Only when our eyes met in the reflection did he finally speak.

"You will make them forget every other name tonight," his voice echoed in my memory.

It was even, matter-of-fact, as if he were commenting on the weather. But something in his silver-gray eyes suggested he believed it completely.

When the ballroom doors opened before me, it was like the gates to another world.

The Grand Ball loomed before me like a battlefield draped in silk and gold. Every consort candidate would be formally presented to Crown Prince Luka and the Aurelion court tonight, a glittering spectacle designed to separate the worthy from the weak.

Nobles in sumptuous fabrics moved through the space like exotic birds, their laughter and conversation creating a symphony of sophisticated excess.

"Princess Penelope of Veridian," the herald announced, and a hush fell over the nearby conversations.

I stepped into the ballroom, my chin lifted, every lesson he'd taught me flowing through my movements. The conversations I'd practiced, the graceful turns, the art of listening while appearing utterly captivated—all of it crystallized into this moment.

"Lady Penelope of Veridia," announced the herald, and heads turned.

I moved forward with measured steps, acknowledging nods and curtseys with practiced elegance. Several nobles approached immediately.

"Your Highness, what an exquisite gown," purred Lady Celeste, her eyes calculating. "Surely Aurelion spared no expense."

"The kingdom's generosity has been overwhelming," I replied smoothly, allowing just enough warmth into my tone to seem genuine while maintaining diplomatic distance.

As I navigated through clusters of conversation, accepting compliments and deflecting probing questions about Veridia's trade policies, something caught my eye that made my carefully composed expression falter.

A Fae woman with gossamer wings pressed against a pillar, her lips locked with a human lord in a kiss that was anything but chaste. Her wing trembled with pleasure as his hands roamed her body with shameless hunger.

In the shadowed alcove near the grand staircase, a woman pressed against the marble wall, her emerald gown bunched at her waist. Behind her, a figure with translucent, shimmering wings traced patterns along her exposed shoulders with glowing fingertips.

The woman's head fell back in obvious ecstasy, completely oblivious to the dozens of nobles who glanced their way without the slightest concern.

My face burned, but I didn't look away. This was the world I had entered, a place where desire wasn't hidden behind closed doors or whispered about in scandalized tones.

It lived and breathed openly, unapologetically beautiful and terrifying.

In another corner, I glimpsed more, a nobleman with his hands tangled in a Fae man's silver hair, their bodies moving together in a rhythm that made my pulse quicken with something I didn't want to name.

This wasn't a hidden scandal or whispered transgression. This was open, shameless, public intimacy displayed as casually as serving wine.

"Fascinating, isn't it?"

I spun around to find Crown Prince Luka himself standing mere inches away. His formal attire was midnight black with silver trim that matched my gown—coincidence or calculation, I couldn't tell.

His dark hair caught the chandelier light, and his eyes held an intensity that made my pulse quicken.

"Your Highness." I managed a proper curtsey despite my burning cheeks.

"Princess Penelope," he said, extending his hand. "May I have this dance?"

I placed my gloved hand in his with no choice but to accept, feeling the warmth of his skin through the thin silk.

The moment his fingers closed around mine, electricity shot up my arm. He led me onto the dance floor with fluid confidence, his hand settling at my waist with possessive certainty.

The waltz began, and we moved together as if we'd danced a thousand times before.

"You seem distressed," he murmured, pulling me closer than propriety typically allowed. His breath ghosted across my ear. "Does our court's honesty offend your Veridian sensibilities?"

"I'm simply... unaccustomed to such openness, Your Highness."

His laugh was rich, dangerous. "Openness." He spun me expertly, then drew me back against his chest. "Is that what you call it?"

As we turned, he positioned us so I could see another couple in a passionate embrace near the garden doors. The woman's fingers clawed at her partner's jacket while the Fae Adept between them traced glowing sigils across both their skin.

"Look at them," Luka commanded softly. "Truly look."

I couldn't help but stare. The trio moved together with hypnotic grace, their pleasure unashamed and radiant.

Something deep in my core responded despite my shock, a heat that had nothing to do with embarrassment.

"They're not hiding…" I whispered, barely aware I'd spoken.

"Why should they?" His thumb traced along my jaw, turning my face back to his. "Pleasure is art here, Princess. Magnificent, honest art. We don't skulk in the shadows or whisper about desire—we celebrate it."

The music swelled, and he spun me again, this time letting his hands slide along my waist before pulling me back. The touch sent fire through the silk of my gown.

"Tell me," he continued, his voice dropping to that honey-whiskey tone that made my knees weak, "what does Veridia celebrate? Duty? Restraint? The careful burial of everything that makes us gloriously, desperately human?"

"We celebrate honor," I said, but my voice betrayed me with its breathlessness.

"Honor." He repeated the word like he was tasting wine. "And what of passion, Penelope? What of the fire I see burning behind those beautiful eyes?"

His hand moved to the small of my back, pressing me closer.

Through the thin silk, I could feel the heat of his palm, the promise in his touch. My heart hammered against my ribs—not from fear alone, but from something far more dangerous.

"You feel it," he said with certainty. "The pull. The hunger. It's written across your face like poetry."

The final notes of the waltz rang out, but Luka didn't release me. Instead, he pulled me into one last, impossibly intimate turn, his breath ghosting across my throat.

"I have not seen a more beautiful or impressive woman tonight, Penelope," he whispered against my ear. "Your fire calls to mine."

As the music died, he lifted my hand to his lips. The kiss lingered, his tongue barely grazing my knuckles in a touch that sent lightning through my entire body.

"Meet me in the Gardens of Pleasure tonight, Princess," he murmured, his dark eyes holding promises that terrified and thrilled me. "Let me show you what true freedom feels like."

His eyes locked with mine as he stepped back, dark amber orbs full of promise and something that might have been challenging. The invitation hung between us like a lit fuse, dangerous and impossible to ignore.

As he bowed and melted back into the crowd, I stood there on the dance floor, my hand still tingling from his kiss and my mind reeling from the choice he'd just placed before me.

The Gardens of Pleasure.

The words echoed in my mind like a challenge, like temptation itself given voice. And despite every lesson in duty and restraint that Veridia had taught me, I knew I would go.
