The Pleasure You Give

Chapter 2

Ch. 2 / 30 Nov 09, 2025

I was leaving behind everything I'd ever known to enter a world that would either remake me or destroy me, and I was beginning to suspect there might not be a difference.

The last thing I saw of home was my father's silhouette in the palace window, growing smaller until it disappeared entirely.

Three days had passed since our conversation in his study, and now the ornate Veridian carriage rolled steadily eastward, carrying me toward a fate I still couldn't fully comprehend.

"Oh, Princess, just imagine the gowns they'll have!" Lady Meredith's voice cut through my brooding. "I heard Aurelion silk is so fine it's practically transparent."

"And the jewels," Lady Cordelia added breathlessly. "Rubies the size of plums, diamonds that catch fire in candlelight."

I pressed my forehead against the cool glass window and watched the countryside blur past. My ladies-in-waiting had chattered incessantly since we'd crossed the border, their excitement about my impending marriage a sharp contrast to the dread coiling in my stomach.

"Crown Prince Luka is said to be devastatingly handsome," Meredith continued. "Dark hair, amber eyes, and shoulders broad enough to—"

"That's enough," I said quietly.

The carriage fell silent. I could feel their confused glances, but I couldn't bring myself to feign enthusiasm.

How could I explain that their prince's physical attributes were the least of my concerns? That every mile brought me closer to humiliation I couldn't even fully imagine?

As we entered Aurelion proper, the landscape transformed. Where Veridian was all rolling green hills and modest stone villages, this kingdom blazed with color and life.

Golden wheat fields stretched toward mountains capped with snow, while vineyards heavy with purple grapes cascaded down terraced hillsides.

"My goodness," Cordelia whispered as we approached the capital city.

The palace rose before us like something from a fever dream.

Spires of white marble reached toward the sky, their surfaces gleaming with veins of actual gold.

Even the people were different. As our carriage wound through the palace courtyard, I caught glimpses of nobles and servants alike moving with a fluid confidence that made my rigid Veridian upbringing feel suddenly provincial.

Women wore gowns that clung to their curves, laughing openly with men who touched them casually, intimately, without shame.

And then there were the Fae.

I'd heard about them, of course, but seeing them was something else entirely. They moved among the humans with ethereal grace, their single iridescent wings catching the light like stained glass.

But there was something in their eyes, a carefully banked fire that spoke of power held in check. Even bound in service, they commanded attention.

"Welcome to Aurelion, Your Highness." The palace steward who greeted us was tall and elegant, with the kind of easy smile that suggested he found the world endlessly amusing. "I am Lord Cassius, and I'll be overseeing your accommodation during your stay."

The way he said ‘accommodation’ made my skin prickle with unease.

He led me through gilded corridors to what would become my prison of silk and gold.

My chambers were a study in seductive luxury, silk hangings in deep jewel tones draped the walls like expensive curtains meant to hide secrets, while the bed—gods, the bed—was a massive affair covered in sheets that looked like spun moonlight.

But it was the view that truly unsettled me.

The balcony doors opened onto what Lord Cassius had called the Pleasure Gardens, though from my vantage point in the fading daylight, they looked innocent enough.

"Dinner will be served at your convenience, Your Highness," Cassius said, his voice smooth as honey. "Crown Prince Luka is unfortunately detained with state business tonight, but he looks forward to meeting you tomorrow."

After he left, I dismissed my ladies and tried to settle into this strange new world. But sleep wouldn't come.

The bed was too soft, the air too warm, the silence too complete.

Back home, I could always hear the sounds of the palace, guards changing shifts, servants preparing for morning, the familiar rhythm of a life I understood.

Here, there was only an expectant quiet that made my nerves sing with tension.

Unable to bear the confinement any longer, I slipped from bed and padded barefoot to the balcony doors. I stepped outside, and for a moment, I felt almost peaceful.

Then the Pleasure Gardens came alive.

Figures moved between the pavilions, couples entwined on silk cushions, groups gathered around flickering candles, bodies moving together in ways that made my cheeks burn.

The sounds reached me next.

Soft laughter, murmured words I couldn't quite catch, and then... other sounds. Gasps that weren't from pain, sighs of what could only be pleasure, music that seemed to pulse with the rhythm of intimacy itself.

My breath caught in my throat. This wasn't just rumor or gossip, it was happening right below my window.

The stories Roset had whispered, the crude speculation of the court ladies, it was all real. More real than I'd ever imagined.

A woman's cry of ecstasy drifted up from one of the pavilions, and I stumbled backward, my heart hammering against my ribs. Through the sheer curtains of a nearby gazebo, I caught a glimpse of intertwined figures, their movements unmistakably passionate.

This was my new reality. This world of sensual freedom and uninhibited pleasure was where I would learn to become... what?

What exactly did they expect of me?

I retreated into my chamber and slammed the balcony doors shut, but I could still hear it, the distant music, the soft sounds of passion, the pulse of a world I didn't understand.

Sinking onto the edge of the massive bed, I wrapped my arms around myself and tried to stop shaking. Years of preparation for marriage had taught me protocol, politics, and proper deportment.

None of it had prepared me for this.
