The Pirate’s True Love

CHAPTER 77

Ch. 77 / 150 May 06, 2026

POV: Beth

Silas steps back onto his deck, giving one final, elegant bow that confirms everything and promises more. The Bone Fleet prepares to pull away, but the sea trembles before they can move. Not wind. Not cannon.

Something beneath.

Fog swirls thicker, churning like a cauldron about to boil over. The crew around me stiffens. I can feel Alaric’s presence a step behind, his breath gone uneven.

A deep groan rolls through the water—earth-shaking, ancient. The deck vibrates under my boots. Men stumble, cursing prayers into their teeth.

Then the ocean splits open.

A tentacle breaks the surface first—colossal, glistening black, lined with suction cups the size of shields. Water cascades off it like a waterfall. It rises higher… higher… towering over the mast.

Screams choke across the deck. Some pirates fall to their knees. Others scramble for weapons they know won’t matter.

My heart halts somewhere in my throat.

A second tentacle surges up—then a third—the waves thrashing violently as something impossibly massive pushes upward. The sun disappears behind its scale. Fog tears away like silk.

And then—

Its eye surfaces.

Yellow-gold, slit pupil, intelligent. Older than every kingdom I’ve ever known. Watching. Studying.

Devouring.

The Kraken.

My knees weaken. Everything in me says: run. But my feet stay planted. Frozen in fear… and something far worse:

Recognition.

That eye pivots—locks directly onto me.

The world shrinks. Breath abandons my chest. It feels as if its gaze pierces through skin, muscle, bone—digging into my blood, searching for something buried deep.

And it finds it.

A low hum vibrates through my skull, like a whispered word I don’t understand—yet feel.

Mine.

The sudden wave of terror nearly topples me, but awe roots into my bones. My fingertips tingle. The sea itself tightens around my pulse.

Behind me, I hear the faintest gasp. Alaric.

I glance back. His face is drained of all color. Not like before—not the bravado or anger. This is fear. Real. Raw. A memory reflected in shaking shoulders. A king who once lost his throne not to a man—but to this creature.

His hand hovers toward his sword, uselessly. His voice cracks silent.

He’s frozen.

The Kraken rises higher, revealing jagged scars across its flesh—old battles carved into it like runes of survival. It groans again, a sound so low my bones vibrate.

It’s too close.

Silas steps forward, eyes bright, almost triumphant. He lifts a hand—not command, not threat—just presence. The Kraken slows… and shifts its gaze back to me.

Its pupil dilates—a drowning sun.

Something in me responds instinctively—a pulse in my veins timed to ocean’s heart.

It knows me.

It recognizes me.

And it bows.

The tentacle lowers slightly, like a creature greeting royalty. My breath rips from my lungs.

Silas smirks. “Do you feel it, Beth? The sea bows for its bride.”

Bride. The word clatters around my ribs like a curse. Heat flashes under my skin, followed by cold terror.

“I’m not—” I choke, stepping back.

But the Kraken watches. Waiting. Judging.

Alaric surges forward suddenly, not toward the beast—toward me. His hand clamps around my arm, gripping so tight it hurts. His voice cracks through fear, hoarse and furious:

“Don’t look at it.”

I tear my eyes away. The Kraken growls, water surging against our hull. A warning.

Silas lifts a calming hand. “Easy. She’s simply… waking.”

Alaric snarls. “She’s nothing to you. Stay away from her.”

Silas gives him a cruel, quiet smile. “You fear she will choose her destiny over your pride.”

“Her destiny isn’t tied to a monster,” Alaric spits.

Silas steps closer, his voice just for us. “Monsters choose queens, Alaric. And the sea has chosen her.”

The fog curls like smoke around my legs. My skin prickles with magic I don’t understand—magic that answers the Kraken’s call.

I yank my arm away from Alaric. “Stop talking about me like I’m a prize.”

Silas softens—eyes gentle with something twisted into admiration. “You are more than a prize, Beth. You are prophecy.”

Alaric’s voice is quieter, but each word chips stone. “You are Beth. That’s enough.”

My throat closes—torn between two worlds.

The Kraken dips back into the depths, disappearing beneath churning waves—but its presence lingers. The ocean isn’t calm. It’s waiting.

Silas bows once more—eyes drinking in my fear, my confusion, my power. “We will speak again soon, saltblood.”

Then he turns sharply, coat whipping in wind, command ripping from his throat:

“Withdraw.”

Black sails retreat like ghosts into fog. The Bone Fleet vanishes as quietly as it appeared, leaving behind boiling silence and a crew too terrified to speak.

I stand trembling.

My heart… isn’t fully my own anymore.
