POV: Beth
Silas stands in the lamplight like something sculpted from the sea itself—coat dripping saltwater, black hair clinging to his jaw, eyes too calm for the chaos around us. Behind him, Kraken’s tendrils ripple just below the waves, a shadow the size of nightmares. Alaric’s ship groans under the damage, crew panting, blood on deck mixing with seawater into pink rivers. Everyone waits for me.
I feel it—the silence held by a single choice. My lungs barely move.
Silas’s voice cuts through the night, velvet wrapped around steel.
“Beth. Come with me. I’ll end this war, I’ll free your father, I will show you every answer you’ve begged the world for. You won’t have to fight, to bleed, or to be mocked by men who fear what they cannot own.”
His eyes flick briefly toward Alaric when he says that.
It burns.
Alaric stands at the opposite side of the deck—jaw locked, fingers white around his sword hilt. He’s bleeding from the Kraken attack earlier, shirt torn open along his ribs, but he refuses to show weakness. He refuses everything—vulnerability, fear, grief. Even me.
The wind snaps the sails above us with a sound like bones cracking. My heart beats against my ribs in the same rhythm.
Silas steps closer, so close I smell the ocean on his skin—deep water, storms, secrets. His presence is gravity.
“You want your father alive.” His hand almost touches mine—not forceful, just there. “All you have to do is say yes.”
My throat closes.Because he’s right.
Because he holds what I need.
Alaric spits aside, voice rough: “She isn’t some token to bargain with.”
Silas laughs softly without looking at him. “And yet you treat her like one.”
I hear the crew shift. Someone whispers—He could save Rowan.
My vision stings.
Alaric’s voice lowers, deadly quiet. “Beth. Don’t.”
Two words. Nothing more. No promise. No comfort.
Not stay, not we’ll save him together, just a command cut from cold pride.
My fingers curl. Pain rushes in my chest hard enough to make breath tremble. They are both staring at me—waiting for my decision. For once, my choice moves armies, monsters, kings.
Silas tilts his head, studying me like a storm studies coastline.
“You’ve seen what he offers you—bruises, scars, humiliation, running. I offer you power. Truth. Your bloodline is older than thrones. Come with me and I will tell you every secret the sea buried. I will help you destroy the Prince, not in fear, but with oceans bowing at your feet.”
His words strike deeper than blades. Because something inside me wants that.
Wants power. Wants to stop being prey.
Wants to stop crying over men who break me to feel strong.
Alaric’s jaw tightens—jealousy, fear, anger flicker in his eyes like lightning. His voice cracks, lower than I’ve ever heard it.
“You go with him, you won’t come back.”
It’s not cruelty. Not smug. It sounds like loss. And that scares me more.
Silas extends his hand. “Beth.”
Just my name. Soft. Dangerous.
The deck is silent except for the sea breathing below us. Everyone waits for the girl nobody cared for weeks ago. My heart bangs like a war drum.
Father. Rowan. Chains. Screams. My wedding, blood on white silk. Alaric mocking me. Alaric saving me. Nights training. Mira smiling too sweet. Silas watching like a knife wrapped in velvet. The Kraken’s eye reflecting the moon. My power roaring through water. Saltborn. Storm Bride.
All choices circle like sharks.
If I take Silas’s hand—I get answers. A path. Safety. My father.
If I stay with Alaric—I get chaos. Pain. War. And something unnamed that terrifies me more than Kraken ever could.
My voice finally breaks free. Barely a whisper.
“I… I don’t know.”
Silas steps closer still—so close I feel his breath.
“You do.” His hand brushes a curl behind my ear. “You’ve always known.”
Something inside me cracks.
For a moment, I imagine it—standing beside Silas, oceans rising at my command, the Prince on his knees. A world where I am feared, powerful, untouchable. Where no man drags my father away screaming.
And then—Alaric says quietly, voice raw like open wounds:
“You leave, Beth… and I lose you.”
The world stops.
He has never said he had me. Never said he wanted to.
But the way he says lose makes my ribs ache.
I choke on breath. Heat climbs my face. Silas watches as if he sees everything inside me splitting.
My hand rises—toward Silas. Crew gasps. Alaric’s sword lifts an inch. My fingers hover over the pirate king’s palm.
One inch. One heartbeat. My fate balancing on a breath.
Then I close my hand into a fist. Trembling. Terrified. And pull it back to my chest.
“No.”
Silas stills—so quiet the ocean itself pauses. My voice steadier now:
“I won’t be bought. Not by thrones, not by monsters, not by kings. If I win power—I’ll win it myself.”
Silas inhales slowly. Not anger—something colder. Disappointment. And behind it… satisfaction?
As if this refusal is only step one of a longer game.
He smiles—small, slow, knowing. “You will come to me one day, Storm Bride. When the sea calls you home. And when you do… the world will tremble.”
My heart jerks. Because I know he believes it.
Kraken shifts beneath the waves, ripples deep enough to rattle the hull. Crew screams. I don’t look away.
Silas leans close, voice only for me.
“I am patient. The sea is patient.”
His lips nearly brush my temple. “And you—belong to the storm.”
The deck feels like it tilts under my feet. Power hums in my veins like tides rising.
I stand stiff, breath shaking. “I chose my path.”
Silas steps back finally, slow as moonset. Not defeated. Not angry. Just waiting.
