The Lycan King's Secret Daughter

Chapter 95

Ch. 96 / 255 May 14, 2026

POV: Sylra

The smell came first. Stone does not usually burn, and it was a smell I had not experienced before.

The specific acrid quality of scorched mineral, hot slate cooling back toward room temperature, pulled me out of sleep rather than working its way into a dream.

I was awake and oriented before I understood what I was smelling.

The scorch ran from the floor to approximately shoulder height along the eastern wall, wide enough to suggest it had originated from a point on the bed.

My hands, while I slept. The golden wolf's accumulation running without the architecture's management channel, because the architecture required consciousness, which sleep removes.

I stood at the edge of the scorch and read it the way I read any scene I had not witnessed: width, height, origin point, the direction the heat had traveled.

When I had the full picture I stayed with it for a moment, not because it changed what needed to happen next, but because looking away too quickly seemed wrong. This had happened in my own chamber, while I was unconscious, and I had not known until the smell woke me.

Ithara arrived while I was still pulling on my boots. She knocked once and came in without waiting, which was the register she used when she had already been informed and was operating on medical urgency.

She brought her satchel and two documents and she looked at the scorch for a long time before she looked at me.

"You were unconscious when this happened," she said.

"Yes, I was, why?" I say hurriedly.

"You did not feel it begin," she said.

"No, I didn’t," I responded.

She measured the scorch's width and height, running a cord across the marks and reading the numbers to herself without comment.

She was operating in the pure clinical register she used when the information was concerning enough to require undivided attention.

"Three sessions daily," she said. "Starting this morning."

"Three," I say, my eyes fixed on her precise moments.

"The accumulation rate adjusted upward again overnight. The third session is the management threshold that holds it at the current level." She folded the measurement cord. "The alternative is that the next event is larger."

I looked at the wall. The cold acrid smell was still fading. Caelen was in the doorway, which I registered at the same moment.

I did not hear him approach, and I did not feel him coming through the bond the way I usually felt his proximity, which told me he had been managing the approach deliberately.

He was positioned at the threshold with the quality of a person who had arrived at a scene and was reading it before deciding what to do with what he found.

His eyes went to the scorch, then to my hands, then to my face. I watched him register what this was. Not the first overflow event, not the managed pressure of the training yard sessions.

This was one that had happened while I was asleep, and he was looking at the evidence of it with the expression he wore when information carried a specific cost rather than merely a weight.

"I am still here," I say to him, never leaving his gaze.

"I know," he said almost immediately.

Ithara gathered her satchel and her documents without ceremony. She said she would send the protocol update to my study and left with the quiet efficiency she used when she understood that the room needed to be a different shape than she was currently occupying.

He was still at the threshold when the door closed, close enough that I could feel the bond's warmth at its standard working proximity.

He was looking at me with the attention he gave to information that mattered, and I could feel through the bond what the information was costing him.

I was aware, in a way I had not been in any of the previous overflow events, of how much I did not want him to leave. Not the wolf's pull and not the management logic.

The simpler, more inconvenient want: his presence, specifically, in this specific room, in the aftermath of the specific thing that had happened while I was unconscious and alone. I noted this, filed it, and did not act on it, which was its own form of discipline.

The restraint we had both been holding since the training yard was present in the space between us. Not diminished. Not resolved. Present, which was its own kind of weight, and I was not in a condition to pretend otherwise.

I felt him make a decision, and the decision moved him backward. He stepped back, not forward.

"I am going to let you sleep," He spoke calmly

"I was not going to ask you to stay."

"I know. I am going to let you sleep anyway. Because that is what you need." He held my gaze, and I could hear in the register he was using that this was the whole truth and not the tactical version of it.

"And because it is the harder choice for me, and you deserve someone who makes the harder choice."

He left, and the door closed, and I stood in front of the wall for a long time after that.

The scorch was cool to the touch. The mark was clean-edged along its upper border.

What I was holding was the knowledge of what he had just done. Not staying. Staying would have cost him less. He had named the harder choice as he made it, which meant I could not misread it as withdrawal, and which meant it landed with exactly the weight he intended.

I stood in my scorched chamber and understood that what he had just given me was more precise than comfort, and that it would cost him to have given it, and that he had given it anyway, which was the definition of what it was.

I also understood that I was going to need to find a way to give him a gesture equally precise in return, at the right moment, in the right register. I did not yet know what that was, but I knew the standard he had just set, and I knew I was going to meet it.
