The Lycan King's Secret Daughter

Chapter 116

Ch. 117 / 255 May 14, 2026

POV: Caelen

The sword was not for cleaning.

I had stopped pretending otherwise somewhere around the third hour. It was for holding — something to occupy the hands while the mind did what it was going to do regardless.

I heard her in the corridor before she reached the door. The bond transmitted her approach the way it transmitted everything: not as data but as presence, warm and specific and unmistakable.

She sat beside me on the floor without ceremony. The correct response. Neither of us spoke. We held the silence with the full weight of what was in it.

After a long time: “I am going to feel it happen.”

The words were precise. That was how I knew I had been sitting with them for hours.

“Yes.” Her voice was quiet.

“The third bond sealing. In the forest. With corrupted wolves on three sides.” I kept my eyes on the sword. “I am going to feel it through the war bond while I am running the formation.”

“Yes.”

“That is what I have been sitting with.” I turned the sword slowly. “Not doubt. Not opposition to the plan but the knowing of it.”

She waited. Not for a conclusion — simply present with wherever I was.

“There is a difference between understanding a thing and understanding it in the body.” I kept the sword still. “Where it becomes a physical event that demands a response from every system I have trained.”

“Tell me where you are with it.”

“I decided on it in the training yard.” The lamp burned at its late angle. “After the fourth dummy.”

“Tell me.”

“I was holding the wrong problem.” I turned the sword once more. “The wrong shape of it. Managing the healing bond as a threat to the war bond’s function instead of reading the actual architecture.”

She was quiet, but still waiting.

“On the fourth dummy I broke the post.” I set the sword down. “And then I stood in the yard and did the calculation correctly for the first time. What the bonds actually are. What you actually are. What I actually feel.”

She held her attention on me with the quality she brought to the things that mattered.

“There is a version of loving you that is large enough to include this.” I set the sword down fully. “The healing bond and the third bond and the sealing in a forest while I am running a war formation.” I paused.

“All three bonds running simultaneously in a combat situation. All three real.” I kept my voice at its working register. Precision required the same thing here that it required everywhere else.

“A smaller version of loving you would need to protect itself from what you are.” I met her eyes. “This version does not need protection. It is large enough to hold the whole of it.”

“You are the kind of man who decides things and holds them.” Her voice was steady. “Who names the version and does not require it to be smaller to survive.”

“Yes.” I looked at her. “I decided that version in the training yard, after the fourth dummy, and I have held it since.”

“I will hold it in the forest tomorrow while I feel the sealing occur. It will not break anything in me. It will be one more thing the bond carries.” I held her gaze. “The bond is large enough. And so am I.”

She held my gaze with the attention she gave to things that were significant and did not require performance.

“I felt what you were carrying all evening.” Her voice was level, unhurried. “I came because I wanted you to have the full weight of that acknowledged.”

“The bond is specific.”

“Yes. And you should not carry it without someone knowing what it is.” She paused. “You should not have to do that.”

There was nothing to answer. She had given me the thing I had not known I needed — to be accurately received.

She put her head on my shoulder. The small shift of her weight. The warmth of it. The bond adjusting to the proximity with the ease of something that had already decided this was correct.

I turned and pressed my mouth to her temple. She did not move. I stayed there for two breaths, the bond running at its full frequency, carrying everything in both directions.

The bond had always been large enough. I was the one who had needed to become large enough to agree.

I lifted my head. She stayed where she was. The three frequencies ran between us — war bond, healing bond, the resonant third. All of them present.

“Carry is the correct word.” I looked at her. “Not endure. Not manage. Carry.”

She looked up at me. “There is a difference.”

“A person carries what they have decided is worth the weight.” I held her gaze. “That is not sacrifice. That is the condition of being the kind of man you need beside you.”

“You decided that.” Her voice was even.

“Yes. The deciding was not difficult. The holding is not hard.”

“Then we are ready.” She held my gaze with the steadiness that meant she had heard everything and was holding it.

“The plan is sound. You will feel the sealing and keep the formation. And the war bond will hold through it.”

“The war bond has held through everything.” I looked at her. “This will not be the thing that breaks it.”

“We ride at first light.”

I agreed and we stayed until it was time. The lamp burned low and the grounds outside went fully quiet, and the bond ran steady between us, and she was warm against my shoulder.

I had understood it as sacrifice. It was not sacrifice. It was the condition of being the person she needed beside her, and I had decided to be that person, and the decision held, and the holding was not hard.

The morning would come. I would ride out carrying all of it — the war bond, the sealing, the three frequencies, the weight of every choice that had led here.

The carrying was the only answer worth giving. It had always been the only answer worth giving.
