The Luna Who Defied Pack Law

Chapter 9

Ch. 9 / 30 Dec 04, 2025

The morning air carried the weight of two armies poised on the edge of violence, and my voice cut through it with desperate clarity. My words hung in the air like a sentence.

"You can take me, but you won't lay your hands on the Moonridge Pack and my pups."

The words rang across the divide between salvation and damnation, between the life I had built and the prison I was offering to return to.

Lucien's hand found my elbow with gentle but insistent pressure, turning me slightly so his words would reach only my ears.

"Lyanna, you cannot trust him. Whatever promise he makes now will dissolve the moment you're within Grimhowl's borders. You’ll become less than property, less than Luna."

"My status as Luna carried minimal weight even six years ago, Lucien,"

I replied, keeping my voice low enough to maintain the illusion of private conversation, though I knew werewolf hearing made true privacy impossible.

"To Rheakar, I was never truly his mate or his equal. I was a vessel for his heirs, a symbol of his authority, a tool shaped to serve his ambitions. At least now I understand the truth of it."

"But your children…" His grip tightened with brotherly concern that made my heart ache.

"How will they manage without you? They've never known a world where you weren't there to guide them, to comfort them when nightmares come."

The image of my sons' faces nearly shattered my resolve—Kai's serious devotion, Finn's gentle perception, Atlas's fierce protectiveness. But I had already made my peace with this sacrifice.

"As long as they remain under their uncle's protection, they'll grow into the men they were meant to be. You've already given them more in six years than Rheakar would have allowed in a lifetime."

"But…" Lucien's protest began to form, his expression shifting between disbelief and determination to find another way.

I silenced him with a gentle hand on his shoulder, feeling the tension coiled beneath his Alpha's composure.

"Just trust me, Lucien. I know what I'm doing. This isn't impulse or desperation speaking. Trust that twenty years in Grimhowl taught me more about survival than you might imagine."

Turning back to face Rheakar across the divide, I raised my voice to carry with absolute authority. "You heard my terms. They're not negotiable."

Rheakar's laugh was sharp as the winter wind, his expression shifting to something between amusement and disdain.

"And what made you think I want you? My legacy lies with the triplets—three strong sons who carry my blood, my strength, my right to dominance. You're merely the woman who stole them."

The words that emerged from my throat carried a certainty that surprised even me.

"Then I will bear you a new heir."

The declaration landed like a stone in still water, sending ripples through both assembled forces. Warriors shifted uneasily, murmurs spreading through the ranks like wildfire.

Even Rheakar's eyes widened with genuine shock, the first honest emotion I'd seen from him since his arrival.

"You will get exactly what you desire, Rheakar, and we will finally put an end to this madness that threatens to drown both packs in blood."

Beside me, I felt Lucien's incredulous stare burning against my profile. His whole body radiated the desire to intervene, to shake sense into me, to drag me bodily from this negotiation.

Yet he remained silent, and for that restraint, I felt profound gratitude. He was perhaps the first person in my life to truly let me speak with my own voice, to make my own choices even when they seemed incomprehensible.

Something Rheakar had never granted me in twenty years of marriage.

"Why would I wait another nine months for just a possibility?"

Rheakar's skepticism dripped from every word, though I could see calculation beginning behind his eyes.

"Then years more to raise and train a potential heir? No, absolutely not. That timeline is unreasonable, and you know it. Time is a luxury I won't grant you."

"You won't get what you want from the triplets," I pressed, seizing on his hesitation.

“And you’re so sure about that because..?”

"They've spent six formative years growing up in conditions completely antithetical to Grimhowl's ways. They know love without condition, strength without cruelty, leadership through wisdom rather than dominance.”

I continued to press, feeling my words gaining strength and meaning.

“You'll spend far more time trying to reshape them into your image—if you can manage it at all. Years of resistance, of them fighting your every lesson, of potential rebellion as they grow stronger."

"There are many other ways to get what I want." Rheakar's eyes flashed with the particular cruelty I remembered from our worst moments, promising horrors I didn't want to imagine.

"Like torture, for example?" I met his gaze without flinching, though my stomach turned at the thought. "Or perhaps you're considering all-out war between our packs?”

He squinted.

“Come now, Rheakar. I stood beside you for twenty years, watched you plan and strategize with brilliant precision. You're choosing the most difficult path when an easier one lies before you, and we both know it.”

I could see the doubt creeping beneath his skin like poison, his certainty wavering as logic battled with rage.

“I offer you the most convenient solution—you'll preserve the peace between our packs, avoid the casualties that would weaken Grimhowl's position among the territories, and still get the heir you're fighting for."

Time to press the advantage—control blow. Something to shatter his ego into pieces.

"You wouldn't allow anyone, especially your own pack, to doubt your ability to make balanced, strategic decisions, would you? The great Alpha Rheakar, reduced to emotional reactions rather than calculated choices?"

For one terrifying heartbeat, I thought I had pushed too far.

His body tensed with the particular stillness that preceded violence, and I could almost see him calculating the distance between us, imagining tearing through anyone who stood between us to rip my throat out.

The silence stretched taut as a bowstring, my heart pounding so forcefully I was certain everyone could hear it.

"So, what's your final decision?" I forced myself to ask, unable to bear the torture of uncertainty any longer.

If he refused, war would be inevitable—I would die before allowing him to take my sons, and Lucien would paint the valley crimson before letting anyone touch his sister or nephews.

The army on both sides was on standby, awaiting the final decision from Rheakar, looking at each other to not miss a surprise attack. My posture was straight, but I wanted to bend over from the pressure of uncertainty.

"Very well." The words emerged suddenly, catching me completely off-guard. "So be it. You will return to Grimhowl Pack today, immediately."

The agreement landed with the weight of shackles closing around my wrists, freedom exchanged for the hope of protecting everyone I loved.
