The Luna Who Defied Pack Law

Chapter 24

Ch. 24 / 30 Dec 04, 2025

The moonless sky offered perfect darkness for our escape, transforming Grimhowl's familiar territory into a landscape of shadows and possibility.

Each footfall measured against the risk of discovery, we moved through the estate grounds like ghosts of ourselves.

Korin leading with the certainty of one who had mapped every guard rotation during his years as Beta, Veyra following with the particular grace learned through months of navigating hostile spaces.

My hand pressed protectively against my belly where my daughter grew, still secret, still safe.

The guilt of leaving Tavric behind gnawed at my conscience with each step toward freedom. The old healer, too frail for this desperate flight, had blessed our escape with tears in his eyes.

"Save yourselves," he'd whispered. "Let an old man's final act be ensuring Silvermoon's blood survives."

I'd sworn to myself that his freedom would follow ours, though the promise felt hollow against the immediate necessity of flight.

"The border lies just beyond the northern ridge," Korin murmured, his voice barely disturbing the night air. "Lucien's forces wait in the valley. Twenty minutes, perhaps less."

Salvation measured in the distance between heartbeats and dawn, between Rheakar's next visit to my chambers and the moment he would discover my absence.

We'd chosen this night specifically—his attention consumed by pack politics, the guards deep in their cups after celebrating some minor territorial victory.

Suddenly, torches ignited simultaneously around us, transforming comforting darkness into a cage of light. Korin immediately pushed Veyra and me behind him, listening and looking around with the speed of a true hunter.

The assembled warriors of the Grimhowl Pack surrounded us like predators.

They stood in perfect formation, weapons drawn but not yet raised, their positioning revealing careful orchestration rather than hasty response.

We'd walked directly into a trap so perfectly sprung that escape had never been possible.

"Well, well, well... what an incredible team we have assembled here."

Rheakar emerged from the shadows with deliberate theatricality, each step calculated for maximum impact.

"My wayward Luna, my traitorous former Beta, and his sweet sister. All together for one final performance."

At his right shoulder stood Seraphina, the lead concubine, her triumph barely contained behind a smile sharp as winter ice. Her silk gown seemed to glow in the torchlight, chosen specifically for this moment of vindication.

"I told you—she couldn't be trusted," Seraphina proclaimed with the particular pride of one whose suspicions had borne fruit.

"I knew they were plotting something. The way they would look at each other, the mysterious absences, Veyra's sudden illness requiring travel to distant relatives..."

"And you were absolutely right," Rheakar acknowledged, his arm claiming her waist with possessive approval. "You will certainly be rewarded for this service to your Alpha."

Marcus stood at Rheakar's left, his presence explaining with brutal clarity how thoroughly our conspiracy had been compromised.

The healer's expression carried no guilt, only the satisfaction of one who had chosen the winning side once again.

"Tell them what you discovered, Marcus," Rheakar commanded, though his eyes never left mine. "Share your fascinating observations about our Luna's condition."

Marcus stepped forward with clinical detachment, his voice carrying across the assembled warriors.

"During the examination, I detected magical fluctuations inconsistent with previous pregnancies. So I performed a more thorough assessment after Luna departed. The anomalies were... illuminating."

"So answer us, my dear Luna..." Rheakar's voice carried the dangerous calm that preceded storms. "What fetus do you carry in your womb? What have you been so desperately trying to hide?"

The silence that followed held the weight of kingdoms balanced on a blade's edge.

Korin shifted slightly, positioning himself between Rheakar and me, while Veyra's hand found mine with trembling solidarity. The truth would damn us all, yet lies had lost their power to protect.

"I carry a daughter," I said, lifting my chin with the dignity of one who has nothing left to lose. "Not the son you demanded, not the heir you expected. A girl who cannot inherit, cannot continue your bloody traditions."

"And the father?" Though his tone remained controlled, I could see the fury building behind his eyes like gathering thunder.

"The father stands beside me." The words emerged clear and unashamed. "Korin's child grows within me, not yours. I chose love over duty, chose life over the legacy of murderers."

The Alpha's composure shattered with volcanic force. "I took you back, gave you a second chance, and you dare lead me by the nose again?!"

His voice rose to a roar that echoed through the night.

"You spread your legs for my Beta while playing the reformed Luna? You carry his bastard while I waste my seed trying to breed an heir?"

His rage transcended personal betrayal, becoming something primal and absolute.

"First, I'll deal with all three of you as traitors deserve. But not quickly—no, that would be merciful. I'll take my time with the women while Korin watches, helpless to prevent what his choices have brought.”

I swallowed hard, but my chin remained high. I squeezed Veyra’s hand tighter in mine as she trembled.

"And then…"

Rheakar continued, his voice dropping to something more terrifying than shouting.

"I'll visit your precious brother. Those triplets you died to protect? They'll learn what happens to the offspring of traitors. Perhaps I'll keep one alive, properly broken, properly trained, as a reminder of what defiance costs."

"Just like you did with Silvermoon?"

The accusation tore from my throat with unexpected force.

"Another pack destroyed, another family line extinguished? Tell me, Rheakar, did you learn that from your father, or was genocide always in your nature?"

Genuine confusion crossed his features—not guilt, but bewilderment at the accusation. "Silvermoon? What does your fallen pack have to do with…"

But contemplation shattered as Korin's transformation erupted with explosive violence.

His wolf form, scarred but powerful, launched toward the Alpha with lethal intent. Rheakar's own shift met the attack, two forces of nature colliding in the space between heartbeats.

They rolled across the ground in a tangle of fangs and fury, neither able to gain clear advantage in those first chaotic moments.

Warriors on both sides stepped back, forming an instinctive circle around the combat, understanding that something greater than personal conflict was unfolding.

Through the snarling and snapping, Korin's voice emerged with the gravity of ancient law:

"We settle this according to pack tradition—trial of fangs."

The words transformed personal vengeance into sacred ritual, invoking codes that even rage could not override. Rheakar's wolf form separated from Korin's, both beasts circling now with deadly purpose.

"You dare invoke the old laws?" Rheakar's voice was barely human through his wolf throat. "You have no standing, no right…"

"I have every right," Korin snarled back.

"Beta's privilege—to challenge an Alpha who has lost his way, who brings dishonor to the pack through cruelty and corruption. I invoke the ancient code. Face me, or be branded a coward before all assembled."
