The Luna Who Defied Pack Law

Chapter 27

Ch. 27 / 30 Dec 04, 2025

Dawn broke over Grimhowl with the ceremonial horns' bronze voices, their ancient call transforming the courtyard into sacred ground where justice and cruelty intertwined with terrible purpose.

From my position on the raised platform, I watched the arena emerge from shadow—a perfect circle marked with silver dust according to laws older than memory.

And viewing platforms arranged in tiers to ensure every pack member would witness what Rheakar intended as execution rather than combat.

The iron chains weighed heavy against my wrists, each involuntary shift drawing the crowd's attention to my transformation from Luna to traitor.

Some observers lowered their eyes in discomfort at my degradation, while others watched with the particular satisfaction of those who witnessed the mighty brought low.

Across the circle, Veyra stood motionless on her matching platform, her delicate frame dwarfed by chains meant for warriors, tears she refused to acknowledge gathering in her grey eyes.

"Quite the spectacle, isn't it?"

Seraphina's voice carried from the premium viewing area where the concubines had been granted special placement.

"The fallen Luna forced to watch her lover's destruction. Rheakar certainly understands the value of theater."

Between our monuments to humiliation, Korin emerged from the preparation area stripped to the waist, his scarred torso a canvas of survival against impossible odds.

The months of torture had carved him lean, muscle and sinew without excess, yet something burned in his bearing that transcended physical limitation—a purpose that made several warriors step back despite themselves.

Rheakar appeared from the opposite side, and the contrast struck like a physical blow. Everything an Alpha should be—unmarked, magnificent, his body a testament to power that had never been truly challenged.

The morning light caught the silver threading through his dark hair, lending him an almost divine aspect that the crowd absorbed with reverent appreciation.

"He's going to destroy him," someone whispered behind me, the words carrying with casual certainty. "The Beta barely survived the dungeons. This will be over in minutes."

"Welcome, Alpha Lucien," Rheakar's voice suddenly rang across the courtyard with poisonous courtesy, and my heart seized as I saw my brother's arrival.

Lucien had come with precisely calculated force—enough wolves to demand respect without constituting invasion, his expression a masterwork of controlled fury as his eyes found mine across the distance.

The chains prevented me from reaching toward him, but I saw his jaw tighten as he absorbed the full tableau of my degradation.

"How fitting that you witness justice delivered to those who betrayed sacred trust," Rheakar continued, ensuring his voice carried to every corner of the assembly.

"After my former Beta dies today, we shall discuss the matter of my stolen heirs and the harboring of fugitives."

"If you harm her…" Lucien began, but the Elder's ancient voice rose above all else.

"The trial of fangs has been invoked according to ancient law," the weathered wolf intoned, his ceremonial robes rustling in the morning breeze.

"Combat shall proceed in wolf form only. The circle remains intact until resolution. Death or submission shall be the sole endings—and in matters of honor such as this, submission itself means death."

"Please," I called out, unable to contain myself any longer. "This doesn't have to happen. There must be another way…"

"Silence the prisoner," Rheakar commanded, and a guard's hand covered my mouth with bruising force, though my muffled protests continued.

The transformation occurred with simultaneous fluid grace, humanity dissolving into primordial purpose.

Rheakar's wolf emerged silver-touched and massive, every line speaking of generations bred for dominance. His shoulders stood nearly as tall as a man's chest, his presence making the circle seem suddenly smaller.

Korin's wolf appeared almost modest by comparison—brown and grey, bearing the lean musculature of deprivation, yet his amber eyes held something that made even hardened warriors shift uneasily.

The initial exchanges unfolded with brutal predictability. Rheakar attacked with the overwhelming force that had never failed him, a silver avalanche of fang and fury that drove Korin steadily backward.

Each impact drew gasps from the crowd as claws raked crimson lines across Korin's flank, as teeth snapped with bone-crushing force that he barely evaded.

"That's it," Rheakar snarled through his wolf throat, the words barely human but perfectly clear. "Show them how a traitor falls. Show them what happens to those who dare reach above their station."

Korin said nothing, conserving energy, focusing entirely on survival as blow after devastating blow rained down upon him. Blood began to darken the silver dust, first in drops, then in spreading pools that marked his retreating path.

"Fight back!" Veyra screamed from her platform, her composure finally shattering. "Korin, please! Don't just defend—attack!"

But defense was all he seemed capable of, each exchange leaving new wounds, each moment bringing him closer to the circle's edge where crossing would mean forfeiture and death.

When Rheakar's teeth finally found purchase on his shoulder, the resulting wound sprayed arterial crimson across the pristine circle.

The sound that escaped my throat despite the guard's hand might have been Korin's name or simple anguish.

My heart fractured with each labored breath he took, each moment that he failed to rise from the bloodied ground.

Around me, the crowd's murmur carried satisfaction—justice being served, order being restored, tradition upheld through violence.

"This is what comes of challenging your betters," Rheakar growled, circling his fallen opponent with leisurely malice. "Did you truly believe a Beta could defeat an Alpha? Did she convince you that love was stronger than breeding?"

The seventh exchange brought catastrophe. Rheakar feinted left with practiced deception before driving right with devastating precision, his full weight crashing into Korin's injured side.

The smaller wolf tumbled across the circle, and before he could recover, Rheakar was upon him—teeth seeking the throat, claws raking across his exposed belly with surgical cruelty.

Korin's desperate twist saved him from immediate death, but left him sprawled near the circle's edge, blood pooling beneath his trembling form.

He attempted to rise, his legs shaking with effort, but they refused to bear his weight. He collapsed again, his sides heaving with exhaustion and pain.

"No!" The word tore from my throat as the guard's grip momentarily loosened. "Please, stop this! I'll do anything, bear your heirs, serve without complaint, just spare him!"

"Your begging comes too late," Rheakar replied, his silver form largely unmarked save for superficial scratches, standing in terrible contrast to Korin's broken body.

His wolf eyes found mine, ensuring I watched as he positioned himself for the killing blow. "Watch carefully, my faithless Luna. Watch what happens to those you claim to love."

Time stretched impossibly thin, each heartbeat an eternity. Lucien's hands gripped the platform railing with enough force to splinter wood, his own transformation barely contained.

Veyra's soft sobs carried across the sudden silence that fell like a shroud over the assembly.

Rheakar lunged for the throat with practiced precision, and my world shattered—the sound that tore from me transcending human or wolf, becoming pure grief given voice as I watched death descend upon the father of my unborn child.
