The God’s Favorite

Chapter 6

Ch. 6 / 60 Apr 21, 2026

Four weeks had dissolved like salt in water. Each day blurring into lessons that reshaped me from the outside in.

How to walk with liquid grace, every step a calculated prayer. How to lower my eyes just so, submission wrapped in allure. How to breathe in the presence of divinity made flesh, as if the Pharaoh's very air was too pure for common lungs.

Tomorrow, when Ra's chariot began its journey across the sky, I would be delivered to the Golden House like a tribute of grain or gold.

Tonight, beneath the vast indifference of stars, I needed to be myself one last time.

The household slept deeply when I slipped through the servants' entrance like a shadow. My handmade bow a familiar weight across my shouldery golden hair finally loose and wild without the hated wig.

The dunes welcomed me with vast silence, still warm beneath my bare feet from the day's heat.

For hours, I tracked familiar paths, following subtle signs of life that emerged when the world cooled. A hare's prints here. A fox's den there.

The language of survival written in sand.

The hair on my neck rose before any sound reached me.

I felt foreign presence like a shift in the air, that particular quality of stillness that preceded. As if the night itself held its breath in anticipation. Or warning.

"You don't learn, do you?" His voice carried across the sand, that familiar blend of amusement and something sharper. "Still wandering alone in the dark."

I lowered my bow with deliberate calm, though my pulse quickened traitorously. "There are no men to fear here."

"I am here," Ram pointed out.

He emerged from shadows with that fluid grace that made him seem more spirit than flesh, moonlight catching the sharp planes of his face.

"So you are…"

I turned back to the tracks I'd been following, refusing to let him see how his sudden appearance affected me.

The memory of our kiss by the river had haunted every lesson, every practiced smile, every sleepless night. I'd felt his mouth against mine while learning to pour wine with downcast eyes.

Tasted him while practicing the arts of seduction meant for another man.

"Why does the High Priest's daughter hunt desert hares beneath the stars?" He moved beside me, his steps making no sound on the sand. "Surely your family's table doesn't lack meat."

I considered deception, but what purpose would it serve?

After tomorrow, none of this would matter.

"I've hunted since I was twelve. There's a merchant near the foreign quarter who doesn't care about tainted blood if the meat is fresh. I saved every copper piece for..." The bitter laugh escaped before I could stop it. "For a future that no longer exists."

The weight of tomorrow pressed against my chest, making breath difficult. I pushed away the heaviness and glanced back at him, needing to shift the focus.

"And what are you doing here? Don't travelers require roads?"

"Hunting pretty girls to sell for good wine.” Ram’s smile is sharp as obsidian. “The desert traders pay handsomely for exotic beauties."

The dark irony pulled a laugh from me. "At least slavers are honest about ownership. Better than being traded for political favor while everyone pretends it's an honor."

I spotted movement ahead—a desert hare, frozen in moonlight. Drawing my bow with practiced ease, I steadied my breath, focused on the target.

Ram moved behind me.

His presence transformed the air itself, making my skin prickle with awareness of him. The heat radiating from his body, the scent of sandalwood and something darker that clung to his skin.

"You're too tense." His voice was dark honey against my ear.

His hands settled on my hips with shocking familiarity, adjusting my stance with minimal pressure that somehow rewrote every lesson about proper behavior I'd endured these past weeks.

"And you're not breathing."

"That's your fault," I managed, trying desperately to focus on the target rather than the solid heat of him pressed against my back.

Rather than the way his thumbs traced slow circles against my hipbones through thin linen.

His laugh rumbled through me, chest vibrating against my spine. "Everything's my fault with you, isn't it?"

One hand slid higher, supposedly correcting my posture, fingers splaying across my ribs just beneath the curve of my breast. My bow arm trembled.

"Tell me, little blessing..." His lips brushed my ear, and my entire body clenched with want. "Did you dream of me?"

The arrow flew wild, sailing over the hare's head. The creature bolted across moonlit sand, escaping into darkness.

I spun to face him, needing distance, needing air that didn't taste of him.

"No. I've been too occupied learning to serve in Golden House to dream of arrogant strangers who appear and vanish at will."

"Arrogant?" Ram caught my wrist as I tried to pass, his grip firm but not painful.

He pulled me closer instead of letting me retreat, until barely a breath separated us.

"You were drowning yourself over a man who chose your sister. I'd say I've earned some arrogance."

"And you're so much better?" I hated how breathless I sounded. "Playing with me like I'm your entertainment?"

"You are.” The admission should have offended me, but heat already pooled low in my belly as something flickered in his eyes—amber deepening toward crimson. “The most interesting thing to happen in a long time. Do you know how boring eternity becomes?"

"Eternity?"

The word hung between us, weighted with implications I couldn't grasp.

He released my wrist, that dangerous smile returning, changing the subject again. "Dawn approaches. I'll walk you home."

We moved through thinning darkness in charged silence. Every accidental brush of shoulders sent sparks cascading through my blood. By the time we reached my back door, I was burning with something I couldn't name.

I should have entered immediately. Should have ended this impossible connection. But my feet refused to obey, and my traitorous heart wanted one more moment.

"You're without your wig tonight."

Ram's observation made me freeze. His gaze traced the golden waves tumbling past my shoulders down to my waist, exposed and shameful in the pre-dawn light.

"How do you hide all of that beneath those temple wigs?"

Shame flooded through me. My hands flew up to gather away the ugly foreign strands, words tumbling out in mortified apology.

Of course he found it repulsive, everyone did. The hair that marked me as wrong, as dirty, as—

His hand caught mine, stilling my frantic movements.

"Don't." The command was gentle but absolute. His fingers threaded through my hair, lifting a strand to catch the growing light. "I like it exactly as it is.”

The words didn't align with any reality I knew. I stared at Ram, speechless, heat blooming across my cheeks that had nothing to do with shame. No one had ever spoken kindly about my hair. No one had ever preferred it.

No one had ever touched it with reverence instead of disgust.

The space between us seemed to compress, the air growing thick. When he stepped closer, when his hand rose to cup my face, his thumb brushing my lower lip, I knew I should stop this.

We’re impossible. There is no possible future for us and no need to torment my heart with meaningless hope.

"I leave for the harem today…" I whispered, a last desperate attempt at reason. "When the sun sets, I'll belong to the Pharaoh."

"I don't care," Ram growled.

When his mouth claimed mine, it was nothing like the desperate gentleness from the river. This was possession, conquest.

His hands tangled in my exposed hair as if he'd been starving to touch it. I dissolved into him despite every warning, despite tomorrow, despite everything. I was melting in his steady arms, barely hearing anything.

But Ram’s last words couldn’t leave me indifferent. “Believe me, I would easily defeat any ruler.”

“I…” Before I could react the dogs shattered the moment, baying from within my house—loud, insistent, announcing that someone had risen.

I tore myself away, running for the servants' entrance, but couldn't resist one final glance back.

Ram stood where I'd left him, watching me with naked hunger that made my stomach clench with want and fear in equal measure.

In the growing light, for just a heartbeat, his eyes seemed to burn.

Pure crimson followed me before I disappeared inside.
