The God’s Favorite

Chapter 21

Ch. 21 / 60 Apr 21, 2026

Afterward, we lay entwined in silk and shadows, my head on Seth’s chest where Ram’s heartbeat slightly sounded.

Seth fingers combed through my hair with surprising gentleness, the gesture tender after such intensity. The air still held the scent of frankincense and something else—power, perhaps, or the aftermath of divine possession.

Seth's eyes opened without the confusion of waking. Gods, I was learning, didn't truly sleep—they simply chose when to acknowledge the world.

Those crimson irises found mine immediately, but instead of the predatory satisfaction I expected, something almost contemplative flickered in their depths.

"Was it as I promised?" he asked, though his tone lacked its usual edge of mockery—a genuine question disguised as arrogance.

Something about his need for reassurance, this ancient god seeking validation like any mortal lover, struck me as unexpectedly endearing. A laugh escaped me, soft and surprised by my own boldness.

"You're fishing for compliments from a mortal?" I traced a finger along the sheet's edge, not quite touching him. "How terribly... human of you."

"I am never human," he said, though the corner of his mouth twitched. "I merely wondered if reality lived up to those dreams I so carefully crafted."

"Careful," I warned, finding courage in this new dynamic between us. "Your divine ego is showing. Next you'll be demanding I compose hymns to your prowess."

"Only if they're accurate." But beneath the familiar arrogance, I caught something else—a flash of genuine pleasure at our banter, as if he'd forgotten what it meant to simply talk with someone who didn't fear or worship him.

The morning felt fragile between us, a crystalline moment that might shatter if either moved too quickly. Seth seemed to sense it too, his usual theatrical dominance subdued into something more genuine.

He shifted onto his side, studying me with an intensity that felt different from his previous appraisals—less hunter examining prey, more scholar considering a complex text. When he reached out to trace my birthmark, the touch was almost gentle.

"Tell me," I said quietly, surprising myself with the request. "Tell me how you came to be... this."

Seth's hand stilled. For a moment, I thought he would deflect with sarcasm or seduction. Instead, he rolled onto his back, gaze fixed on the painted ceiling where scenes of divine glory mocked his current state.

"You know the stories," he began, his voice carrying the weight of millennia. "Seth the destroyer, the murderer of Osiris, chaos incarnate. Some of it is even true."

"But not all?"

"Truth depends on who tells it. Yes, I killed my brother—though the reasons were more complex than jealousy. Yes, I brought chaos—though Egypt needed change more than it knew. The other gods cast me out not for my crimes, but for my refusal to bow to their perfect order."

He sat up slowly, the sheet falling away to reveal the body that housed such ancient rage. In the morning light, I could see what darkness had hidden—faint lines of strain around his eyes, a tension in his shoulders that spoke of constant battle.

"I wandered the divine realm for centuries, growing stronger, angrier. Then, three hundred years ago, I saw my chance." His expression darkened with remembered fury. "Egypt had grown complacent under weak pharaohs. I would take it, reshape it, make it mine."

"What happened?"

"Hubris happened. I possessed the Pharaoh, thinking his mortal form would be a temporary vessel. But the priests were cleverer than I anticipated. They performed a binding ritual—not to cast me out, but to trap me within."

Seth rose from the bed, pacing to the window with movements that should have been graceful but carried subtle wrongness—like watching a lion forced to move as a house cat might.

"They bound my essence to the royal bloodline itself," he continued, his back to me. "Each pharaoh's death transfers me to his heir, along with another consciousness—the human soul I'm forced to share space with. Ram is the seventh I've endured."

"And the rituals?" I asked, remembering Anuket's body, the other missing girls.

"They used to help, but lately..." He turned to face me, and I saw not the god of chaos but something more complicated—a being clinging to existence by increasingly desperate means.

Seth couldn't find the strength to continue. Instead, he moved to return to the bed, to me, but mid-step his leg buckled. Falling to one knee, Seth found support on the floor with one hand as his body betrayed him.

For a moment, he stood frozen, head bowed, breathing with careful control.

"Seth?" I started to rise, concerned overriding caution.

"This is nothing." The words cracked like a whip. He straightened with visible effort, but I'd seen the tremor in his hands, the way he leaned too heavily on the furniture. "Just a minor... side effects."

But it wasn't nothing. I slid out of bed, afraid to take my eyes off Seth for too long—what if he needed urgent help at any moment?

“Are you in pain?” I ask gently. I reached out to his face, not yet realizing what exactly I was about to do, when he jerked his head away, not allowing me to touch him.

“Don’t.”

"I only meant—"

"I know what you meant." He pushed himself upright through visible effort, using the carved bedpost for leverage with movements that came in jarring segments. "Your concern is as unwanted as it is unnecessary."

The venom in his voice couldn't quite hide the underlying panic—not of dying, but of being seen like this. Vulnerable. Mortal. Less than the divine terror he proclaimed himself to be.

"Stop pretending this is nothing when you can barely stand." My voice carried more authority than I knew I possessed.

"You forget yourself, little blessing. One night in my bed doesn't grant you the right to—"

His words cut off as another wave of weakness hit. This time he caught himself against the wall, his proud shoulders bent with the effort of remaining upright.

I instinctively moved towards him, but his commanding tone pinned me to the spot.

“I TOLD YOU TO GET OUT!” Seth's voice filled the room, and his eyes glowed crimson. I couldn't say he was sane or not a threat to me. I wasn't sure of anything anymore, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't afraid.

Seth’s glance softened then, the fire in his eyes settled. "Just leave…" The word emerged strangled, forced through pride thick as blood. "If you have any... regard... for what we shared, then go. Don't make me beg."

I gathered my silks with shaking hands, wrapping them around myself with movements that felt too loud in the charged silence.

But I paused at the threshold, looking back to see him sink onto the bed's edge, head in his hands, shoulders bent with exhaustion he could no longer hide.

My heart was breaking with compassion and something completely natural, yet still vaguely familiar. Awakening feelings for the one I was destined to love. Or was this something that depended solely on me?
