The God’s Favorite

Chapter 13

Ch. 13 / 60 Apr 21, 2026

The whispers rose around me like incense smoke, feeding something dark and primal in my chest. Pitying murmurs from the merchants' wives, barely suppressed laughter from young nobles, judgment from dozens of eyes fixed on my humiliation.

Each sound, each glance, stoked the fire building in my veins.

Tia stood above me, her shadow falling across the wine pooling at my knees. She gazed down with barely concealed arrogance, triumph radiating from every line of her perfect posture.

This single moment proved everything she'd always believed—that I was beneath her, had always been beneath her, would always be nothing more than foreign blood polluting Egyptian purity.

The anger that surged through me didn't feel entirely my own. It was primitive, ancient, familiar yet utterly foreign—as if something that had slept within me since birth had suddenly opened its eyes.

The sensation was intoxicating and terrifying in equal measure, power and fury braided together like rope.

I lifted my gaze slowly, deliberately, meeting Tia's eyes from beneath my wine-soaked lashes. Something must have shown in my expression because her triumphant smile faltered.

A flash of silver-white sparked across my vision—or perhaps in it—and Tia's face shifted from victory to nervous uncertainty in the space between heartbeats. She leaned down, her voice dropping to a hiss meant only for my ears.

"What is that wild look, you dirty-blooded—"

The words died in her throat.

The entire hall fell silent with the coordinated precision of a temple ritual. Every head bowed, every knee bent, as the Pharaoh rose from his seat. I felt rather than seeing his movement, the air itself responding to his will.

His footsteps against marble echoed through the sudden quiet, each step deliberate, unhurried, inevitable as the sunrise.

He was walking directly toward me.

The energy in the room shifted, charged with something dangerous that made the hair on my arms rise despite the wine cooling on my skin. Power rolled off him in waves, not the gentle presence from yesterday's study but something far more primal—divine authority given form.

Tia immediately prostrated herself, her forehead touching the floor in absolute submission. Her voice turned honey-sweet with apology, words tumbling over each other in her haste to explain.

"Your Majesty, forgive me, it was an unfortunate accident. My dress caught on the pitcher's handle, I never intended—"

"Weren't you taught to speak only when spoken to?"

Ram's voice cut through her babbling like a blade through silk, cold and absolute with authority. The warmth I'd grown accustomed to had vanished entirely, replaced by something that made my pulse race with equal parts fear and fascination.

Tia dared a glance upward, and whatever she saw in his eyes made her face drain of all color. She pressed herself lower, her entire body trembling with genuine terror.

I'd never seen her afraid before—it was both satisfying and unsettling to witness her perfect composure shatter so completely. Ram's attention shifted to me, and his voice carried across the silent hall with deliberate authority, meant for every ear present.

"Look at me."

I'd been glaring at Tia still, my body rigid with that strange, not-quite-mine rage. Only now did I realize my mistake—I hadn't bowed. The entire court was witnessing my defiance, this foreign girl who dared remain upright in the Pharaoh's presence.

The command in his voice allowed no refusal. I dragged my gaze from Tia's prostrate form to meet Ram's eyes, and the world contracted to just the two of us. His gaze locked onto mine with an intensity that stole my breath.

Something flickered in his expression—recognition, fascination, a hunger that had nothing to do with desire and everything to do with discovery.

He saw the spark still burning in my eyes, that silver-white fire that had frightened Tia, and his own eyes seemed to brighten in response. Amber deepened, shifted, as if something within him recognized something within me.

"Will you continue to allow these plebeians to stare at your vulnerability," he asked, his voice dropping to something almost intimate despite the hundreds of witnesses, "or will you rise?"

The question hung between us, weighted with meanings the court couldn't possibly understand. I found myself physically unable to look away from him, as if his gaze had woven an invisible tether between us, binding me to him with something stronger than silk or gold.

I rose to my feet without breaking eye contact, wine still dripping from my hair, my ruined silk clinging transparently to my skin. But somehow the humiliation had transformed into something else entirely—defiance wrapped in submission.

I stood before him, exposed yet unashamed, and felt power flow between us like water finding its level.

Ram made a lazy gesture with his hand, beckoning without looking away from me. The Harem Mistress and several courtiers rushed forward instantly, bowing low as they awaited instruction.

"Take her," he commanded, his voice calm, measured, but carrying absolute authority. "Make her presentable again."

The words were somehow both dismissive and protective—acknowledging my state while refusing to let it diminish me. He was declaring, before the entire court, that I was not to be treated as entertainment or scandal, but as someone under his direct protection.

Then Ram's voice rose to address the entire hall, each word falling like a stone into still water.

"The banquet has concluded." No explanation. No ceremony. Simply the declaration that this gathering had ended because he willed it so.

Without another glance at the assembled court, at Tia still trembling against the marble, at the foreign diplomats and Egyptian nobility frozen in their positions of respect, Ram turned and walked away.

His departure was permission for the rest to breathe, to move, to slowly return to life—but the air he left behind crackled with unanswered questions and dangerous possibilities.

Servants surrounded me immediately, wrapping me in clean linen, but I barely felt their ministrations. My skin still burned where Ram’s gaze had touched it, my birthmark throbbing with heat that had nothing to do with shame and everything to do with recognition.

"Come, my lady," the Harem Mistress murmured, her tone drastically different from her usual cold efficiency. "We must get you cleaned and changed."

As they led me away, I caught a glimpse of Tia finally raising her head from the floor. Our eyes met for an instant, and what I saw there wasn't hatred or triumph.

It was fear.

She'd seen something in me tonight, something that had shaken her to her core. And Ram had seen it too—had recognized it, responded to it, protected it.

I didn't understand what was happening to me, what power stirred beneath my skin like a serpent waking from winter sleep. But I knew with absolute certainty that everything had changed in that moment of public disgrace turned into divine intervention.
