The God’s Favorite

Chapter 49

Ch. 49 / 60 Apr 21, 2026

Persenet’s POV

The knock came at midnight.

I'd been lying awake, staring at the painted ceiling, mind churning with everything that would happen at dawn. Coronation. Crown. Queen. Ram's wife in law if not yet in heart. Sleep wouldn't come—too many thoughts, too many fears, too many conflicting desires warring beneath my skin.

"Enter," I called, expecting a servant with sleeping draught or a message from Kiya.

The man who stepped through my door was neither.

He was young—perhaps twenty—with simple servant's linen and unremarkable features. Brown skin, shaved head, the build of someone who carried things for a living. But his eyes burned crimson in the lamplight, and the way he moved spoke of something ancient wearing unfamiliar skin.

"Seth." I sat up, heart hammering. "What did you—"

"Borrowed him." Seth's voice emerged from the servant's throat, deeper than such a body should produce. "He's sleeping inside his own mind. Won't remember anything." He moved closer, strain visible in his borrowed features—muscles twitching, veins at his temples. "This vessel is weak. Not built to contain a god. We don't have long."

"Long for what?"

As he spoke, the servant's face began to shift. Features rippled like water disturbed by stone—the plain brown eyes bleeding to crimson, the unremarkable jaw sharpening, the shaved head suddenly crowned with hair the color of dried blood. Within moments, the face I knew from dreams looked back at me from solid flesh. Seth's true face, worn over borrowed bones.

'I wanted you to see me,' he said, his own features now animate with expressions I'd only witnessed in sleep. 'Not some stranger's mask. Me.'"

He stopped at the edge of my bed, looking down at me with an intensity that stole my breath. "I've waited too long. Watched too long. Wanted too long." His jaw tightened.

"I know what tomorrow brings, and I cannot wait any longer." "Seth—" "Tomorrow changes nothing about what you are to me. But I couldn't let it happen without reminding you."

"Of what?"

"Of this."

He reached for me—and for the first time since his reformation, his touch was real. Solid fingers cupping my face, warm palms against my skin. The shock of actual contact after weeks of smoke and shadows made me gasp.

"I can touch you," he breathed, wonder bleeding through the possession. "Feel you. Hold you." His thumb traced my cheekbone. "Do you know how long I've wanted this? Watching you every day, unable to reach you—"

"Seth." I caught his wrists, torn between pushing him away and pulling him closer. "You can't just possess people to—"

"He volunteered. I've been watching the servants for weeks. This one dreams of adventure, of being more than a body carrying linens. I offered him memories no mortal could have otherwise." Something vulnerable crossed his borrowed features. "I made a deal so I could touch you before you belong to another man."

The raw honesty cut through my resistance. This wasn't violent possession like his imprisonment in Ram. This was desperation—a god so consumed by need that he'd bargained with a servant for borrowed flesh.

"We don't have long," Seth said again. His hands trembled—the body fighting divine presence. "An hour before this vessel burns out. I needed you to remember what we have. Before you become his."

"Remember what?"

"That I love you." The words came out rough, torn from somewhere deep. "Not in dreams. Not through smoke. I love you in whatever flesh I can find, with whatever time I can steal."

He kissed me before I could respond—really kissed me, with solid lips and warm breath. The sensation was overwhelming after so long without.

"Tell me to stop," he murmured. "If you'd rather save yourself for your king—"

I silenced him with another kiss.

"I know." He pressed his forehead against mine. "I know you have to go through with it. I'm not asking you to refuse." His borrowed hands found the ties of my sleeping shift, fingers working the knots with surprising dexterity. "I'm asking you to remember this. Remember me."

The linen pooled at my waist. Seth's breath caught—three thousand years old and still undone by the sight of me.

"Beautiful," he murmured, lowering his mouth to my collarbone, to the birthmark that pulsed hot beneath his lips. "Every time. Every vessel. Every lifetime. You'd still be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

I pulled him down onto the bed, desperate for more contact, more weight, more of him while I could have him. His borrowed body covered mine, solid and warm and achingly real after so many weeks of smoke and shadow. I ran my hands across the unfamiliar planes of this stranger's chest while Seth's familiar intensity burned behind borrowed eyes.

"Look at me," he commanded, and I did—watched crimson eyes darken with want as he settled between my thighs. "I want you to see me. Not this body. Me."

"I see you." I arched into him as he began to move, slow and deliberate. "I always see you."

What followed was slow and devastating. Seth refused to rush—savoring every gasp, every shudder, building sensation in waves that crested and retreated until I was trembling beneath him. His mouth found my throat, my breasts, the curve of my hip. His hands learned paths that made me cry out, then did them again just to hear the sound.

"Again," he demanded against my skin, voice rough with need. "Say my name again."

"Seth." It came out broken, pleading. "Please—"

"Please what?" He stilled, buried deep, and I nearly sobbed at the loss of movement. "Tell me what you need, little blessing."

"You. All of you. Harder. Now."

He gave me what I asked for—and more.

The world narrowed to sensation—his weight pressing me into silken sheets, his breath hot against my neck, the rhythm we built together that grew faster, more urgent, more desperate. I clung to shoulders that didn't belong to him, kissed lips that were borrowed, but the soul behind them was undeniably Seth. My Seth. The god who'd found me drowning and decided to keep me.

"Mine," he growled against my throat, driving deeper. "Tell me. Tell me who you belong to."

"You." I couldn't think, couldn't breathe, couldn't do anything but feel. "Yours. Always yours."

When the peak finally shattered through me, I screamed his name into the darkness and let myself fall apart completely. He followed moments later, my name torn from borrowed lips like a prayer—or a promise he intended to keep.

We lay tangled together after, his borrowed heart racing against my chest, both of us slicked with sweat and breathing hard. I traced patterns on unfamiliar skin, memorizing the sensation of actually touching him—the weight, the warmth, the solid reality I'd craved for so long.

"The vessel is failing," Seth said quietly. I could feel it—tremors running through him, muscles twitching as the servant's body strained against divine occupation. "I have to go."

"Not yet." I pulled him closer. "Just a little longer."

"I don't want to hurt him." He pulled back to look at me, crimson eyes soft in a way I'd rarely seen. "And I don't want you watching me burn out a body. That's not the last thing I want you to remember."

I hesitated for a moment, but quickly respected and appreciated the measures he was taking to not let anyone else get hurt.

"I know." I kissed him one last time—deep, slow, memorizing the taste of him. "Go. But Seth?"

"Yes?"

"Thank you. For finding a way."

His smile was the most human expression I'd ever seen on his face. "Forever, Enet. Crown or no crown. Husband or no husband. You're mine forever."

Then the crimson faded, and Amenhotep slumped unconscious in my arms.

I eased him onto cushions at the foot of my bed, checking his breathing. His face was peaceful, unmarked.

I sat alone as dawn lightened the windows, body still humming with aftershocks, skin branded everywhere he'd touched me. Between my thighs, I still ached with the memory of him.

In a few hours, I would become Ram's Queen.

But Seth had claimed me first. And I could still feel him everywhere.
