The First Vampire's Heart

Chapter 8

Ch. 8 / 30 Feb 28, 2026

Several weeks pass.

Dates that start like negotiations and end with shared jokes and midnight confessions. Phone calls when the world narrows to just his voice. His apartment three nights a week, mine the rest. We build something careful, something that might survive daylight.

Somewhere in that time, Lucien vanishes from our usual streets; even his silence feels like a threat waiting offstage.

I learn the weight of Dorian’s hand at the small of my back when we cross avenues at night, the way he listens more than he talks. He learns I steal his books and return them annotated.

He laughs more than he means to.

I sleep better than I have in years. The more I see him, the more the old fantasy claws back to life: to stop aging, to walk beside a vampire king as something like his princess instead of someone’s secret.

The more I want it, the more a new fear grows—that if I fall all the way, he’ll do what Lucien did. Call me precious, then choose another girl.

Then I break. I run away. From him. From myself. I stop answering calls and let messages stack up like unanswered prayers.

Incense hangs like a memory in the dim nave, candles shivering in their red glass sleeves.

I sit alone in a back pew of the old church on the Trinity graveyard, Manhattan’s noise gone thin beyond the stone. Through warped glass I can see tilted headstones and bare trees.

Silence gathers thick as smoke. Somewhere ahead, a door sighs open. Footsteps. Unhurried. Sure. A man’s voice begins a greeting and breaks off. A hush. The softest exhale. The brief sound of weight meeting wood.

Nothing more. No scream. No spectacle. Just a life turned quietly off like a lamp.

I don’t turn. I already know who it is.

"You shouldn't be here," I say. The part of me that has been starving says finally.

"Neither should you," he answers. "Unless this is where people come to confess to having vanished."

"I needed to think."

"You needed to disappear," he snaps. The temper is new. "I woke to an empty bed and silence. I thought Lucien had taken you."

"He disappeared," I shoot back. "One day he’s everywhere, the next he’s gone and nobody admits it. Forgive me for not trusting the oldest monster in the room."

His jaw flexes. "Is that what I am to you now? Old monster?"

"You are old," I say, because cruelty is easier than panic. "Old and dangerous and bored enough to collect broken human girls until you trade us in."

His eyes flare, hurt under anger. "Says the woman who runs from my bed to a graveyard and sits here ready to beg for fangs so she can keep sleeping with monsters. Little vampire whore chasing crowns."

The words hit like a slap. I flinch, then bare my teeth. "At least I know what I want. You pretend you’re above it."

He takes a breath like he might turn away, then doesn’t. For a heartbeat he looks afraid—not of me, but of losing me.

The church seems to lean in.

"You want to be one of us," he continues. "To stop flinching at clocks. To sit at someone’s right hand and call it a throne. You want a prince and a crown and a story where nobody ever leaves."

"I want not to be left," I say. "Lucien promised forever and chose someone shinier. You could do the same. Turn me, keep me until I bore you, then find another girl to play queen."

His expression cracks. The centuries sit heavy on his shoulders. "You think eternity makes it easier to lose someone?" he asks. "It just means you have longer to replay the moment you failed. I refuse to lose you by caution or by pride."

I look at him. The rain in his hair, the blood at his cuff, the way his hands tremble once before he stills them.

"What if I love you?" I whisper. "What if I already do, and fifty years from now you wake up bored and I’m trapped as the girl you outgrew?"

He steps closer, between pews that smell of polish and dust and prayer. He still doesn't reach for me. He simply lets his voice fill the vaulted dark, as if making vows to the stones themselves.

"Nora, I love you." he says. He holds me with his eyes until even the candles seem to listen. "Walk beside me. Choose me, and I will choose you again and again, night after night, forever."

The world narrows to the ache in my chest and the impossible calm of his gaze. Seeing not the mask I wore for Lucien. Not the good girl I pretended to be for my parents. But the marrow. The woman who wants a throne and is terrified to sit on it.

I cross the last inches between us and kiss him.

"Then say yes," Dorian murmurs against my mouth, reverent and wrecked. "Say it and I will make it true."

"Yes," I breathe. "Yes."

His hand cradles the back of my neck. Anchoring rather than claiming. His mouth finds the line where pulse lives. He waits for the smallest nod. The smallest tilt.

When I give it, when I claim my choice the way I should have claimed everything years ago, his fangs pierce.

Pain and pleasure braid until they are indistinguishable.

The world blooms white. Sound gutters to a soft sea-roar.

I feel myself empty into him—heat, history, a thousand small angers I never let myself speak. He drinks like a prayer. Like a promise. Steady and controlled, drawing me toward a brink that feels like the edge of the sky.

The first drop lands on my tongue and the world tilts.

His blood is thunder and lullaby. Iron and velvet. I feel his pulse in my mouth and, miracle, I feel mine answering. Braided to his. Beating in a rhythm that is not mine alone and not his alone but ours.

The church seems to dissolve around us. Marble breathes. The air hums like a struck chord. My vision floods with memory—our memory—cities he’s walked, wars he’s survived, faces that blurred and faded while he remained.

"Stay," he whispers. Forehead resting to mine. "Stay with me."

Our hearts race. Catch. Slow together. My fingers twist in his coat. The candles seem to lean closer. What was fear becomes surrender. What was shame becomes hunger. What was loneliness becomes an unbroken chord.

And then, as if the church itself has drawn its last breath with us, the rhythm that tied us to the old world unspools. Two beats. One beat. Stillness.
