Dorian drives us upstate on a Saturday night. Three hours north to a property I didn't know he owned. The mansion sits on twenty acres of woods. Stone and ivy and windows that catch moonlight like eyes.

Inside it smells like old wood and older secrets.

He leads me to a room with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a fireplace that fills the space with amber light. From his coat pocket he produces a wooden box. Opens it to reveal a knife.

The handle is carved bone. The blade Damascus steel that ripples like water.

He holds it out to me.

"In my time, this was how we made promises. Blood and blade."

My breath catches. "Promises."

"Vows."

"Is this—" I stop. Start again. "Are you asking me to marry you?"

"I'm asking you to bind yourself to me. The way my people did before churches and paperwork." He doesn't look away. "The way that matters."

"Forever."

"Yes."

"That's a long time."

"We have a long time."

I look at the knife. At his face. At the certainty there.

"What if I say no?"

"Then we put the knife away and I ask again in a hundred years."

Despite everything, I smile. "A hundred years?"

"I'm patient."

"You're insufferable."

"Is that a yes?"

I take the knife. Feel the weight of it. The edge that could split skin with barely any pressure.

"It's a yes."

Dorian extends his palm face-up. I understand without explanation. Draw the blade across his palm. Blood wells dark and immediate.

He takes the knife from me. Steadies my hand with his free one. Cuts my palm with the same deliberate care.

We press our hands together. Blood mixing. Flowing between our fingers.

His voice is steady. Formal. Each word landing with the weight of an oath.

"I choose you in your hunger. I choose you in your wrath. I choose you in all the ways the world says you should be ashamed."

My throat tightens. I grip his hand harder. Feel our blood pulse in a matched rhythm.

"I choose you in your darkness. I choose you in your control. I choose you knowing exactly what you are."

We stand like that. Hands clasped. Blood dripping onto hardwood that's probably seen this ritual before.

He releases my hand. Brings his bloodstained palm to his mouth. Licks the wound clean. Watches me.

I do the same. Taste his blood mixed with mine. Copper and salt and something that feels like permanence.

Then he kisses me. Our blood mingles on our tongues.

We move to the bed slowly. Unwrap each other layer by layer. No urgency this time. Just inevitability.

He enters me with care. Our cut palms, slick with crimson, press together above my head. The white sheets beneath us soak it up like a canvas.

He moves with deliberate slowness, his body finding mine in a way that feels both ancient and new. There’s no rush, no frenzy—just the inevitability of two creatures bound by something deeper than hunger.

His touch is a caress, a promise, a claim. I feel him everywhere, his presence seeping into my pores, branding me from the inside out.

Our rhythm is unhurried, a dance of flesh and blood that builds not toward a peak but toward something far more profound. Each thrust is a whisper of possession, each murmur escaping his lips a hymn to my surrender.

My fangs find his shoulder, sinking in with a force that draws a low growl from his throat. I leave my mark on him, biting and licking, my tongue lapping at the faint trace of copper that lingers on his skin. He returns the favor, grazing my collarbone, his lips trailing fire down my chest.

The room echoes with the symphony of us—our breaths mingling, our skin sliding together in a slick, filthy harmony. Every inch of him is mine, every inch of me his.

The wet, sticky heat between us is a testament to our shared hunger, a hunger that goes beyond the physical. We are two halves of a single being, bound by blood and something darker, something eternal.

When he bites me again, deeper this time, I arch into him, my body trembling with the force of it. His hands grip my hips, pulling me closer, driving himself into me with a ferocity that leaves me gasping.

The pleasure builds, slow and relentless, until it consumes me entirely. I scream his name, my voice breaking as waves of ecstasy crash over me, drowning me in their intensity.

Afterward, we lie tangled together. The sheets beneath us are stained dark. The fire has burned down to embers. His hand rests on my hip, possessively, protectively, and I know, without a doubt, that I am his—forever.

Dorian’s voice breaks the quiet.

"Do you regret it? Turning?"

I don't hesitate.

"No."

He kisses my temple. My cheek. My mouth. His smile is soft and rare.

"Good. Because I'd do it again."

We stay in the mansion until Sunday night. Then drive back to the city as the skyline resolves from darkness.

Dorian parks outside The Vesper. The gathering is in full swing. Music bleeding through brick walls. The queue wrapped around the block.

We bypass the line. The bouncer nods us through.

Inside, the crowd parts without conscious decision. Vampires making space the way water makes space for stone.

Conversations falter. Heads turn.

I walk beside Dorian with blood still visible on my collar. Dried and dark against pale skin.

I don't shrink from the attention. Don't perform contrition or strength or anything except what I am. A woman who chose this. Who would choose it again. Who has stopped apologizing for teeth and hunger and the space I occupy in a world that told me to be smaller.

We reach Dorian's usual table.

He sits. I sit beside him. Not behind. Not hidden. Just there. Visible. Unapologetic.

Below us the crowd gradually returns to their drinking. Their feeding. Their games.

But the shift has been noticed. Recorded.

A fledgling who stood against Sabine and won. Who walks beside one of the oldest vampires in the city like she belongs there.

Because I do.

Dorian's hand finds mine on the table. I lace our fingers together.

The music swells. The night continues.

And for the first time in my entire existence, I am exactly where I belong.
