The Cruel Emperor’s Bride

Chapter 54

Ch. 54 / 150 Dec 05, 2025

The world seeped back into Ariaxa in fragments.

Heat.

A hand.

Someone breathing too close.

Her eyelids fluttered. Everything felt thick, heavy — like she was resurfacing from a lake of molten gold. When she finally managed to focus, the first thing she saw was Kaedan.

Not standing.

Not looming.

Not furious.

But slumped in a chair beside her bed, head resting on his forearm, his hand tightly clasped around hers.

His hair had fallen loose over his brow. His eyes were closed. His jaw — usually so sharp with tension — was slack, softened by exhaustion. He looked… human.

Ariaxa’s breath hitched.

Her fingers twitched.

Kaedan jolted awake like he’d been stabbed.

“Ariaxa.” His voice cracked — the sound of a man who hadn’t slept, hadn’t breathed properly, hadn’t allowed himself to feel anything but terror. “You—” His throat closed. He swallowed hard. “You terrified me.”

The words hung between them, heavy and trembling.

Ariaxa blinked, confused, voice hoarse. “Kaedan… what—”

“You nearly died.” He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, hands braced around hers as if she were the last anchor he possessed. “You stopped breathing twice. Twice, little Sun.”

Little Sun.

He hadn’t called her that since before everything fractured.

Ariaxa exhaled shakily. “I… I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

His eyes lifted to hers.

There was no mask.

No cruelty.

No iron walls.

Only raw, devastating vulnerability.

“You did,” he whispered. “You frightened me more than any blade ever has. More than Elyndor ever did.”

Her chest tightened painfully. She had never seen him like this. Kaedan — destroyer of kingdoms — looking at her like she could shatter him with a single breath.

Slowly, she lifted her hand toward his cheek.

Kaedan caught it halfway.

Not to stop her — but because the touch seemed to burn him.

His fingers trembled as they wrapped around hers. He bowed his head, inhaling through his teeth like the contact was too much and not enough at the same time.

“Don’t,” he whispered.

She froze. “Don’t what?”

“Don’t touch me unless…” He shook his head, voice fracturing. “Unless you mean it.”

Ariaxa’s heart pounded so hard she felt it in her wound. “Maybe I do.”

His breath stopped.

Completely.

She watched realization, fear, longing, disbelief flash across his face in rapid succession — like a man trying to make sense of lightning striking his chest.

His hand tightened around hers.

He didn’t push her away.

He didn’t retreat.

Instead… he laced their fingers together.

A soft gasp escaped her. The simple interlocking of their hands felt more intimate than being stripped bare.

Kaedan leaned closer, slowly — almost painfully slow — like he was afraid to spook her, or himself.

“Ariaxa,” he murmured, voice low and rough. “Tell me to stop.”

She couldn’t speak. Couldn’t move. Her body was molten, drawn toward him by something frightening and magnetic.

He leaned closer still, his breath brushing her lips, his forehead nearly touching hers.

“Please,” he whispered, voice shaking. “If you don’t want this, tell me to stop.”

Ariaxa’s fingers curled tighter in his.

“I’m not telling you anything,” she breathed.

Kaedan inhaled sharply, the sound almost a groan.

He moved closer — so close their lips nearly touched.

Her heart hammered.

His eyes flicked from her lips to her eyes, searching, trembling, begging for permission without saying the words.

Ariaxa’s breath hitched.

Kaedan’s lips brushed hers — barely, lightly — just the ghost of a kiss.

Electric.

Shattering.

Inevitable.

Her eyes fluttered shut—

BANG.

The chamber doors flew open.

A guard stumbled in, breathless, pale, unaware he had just stepped into something he should never have seen.

“Your Majesty,” he gasped. “Forgive me — I wouldn’t interrupt, but—”

Kaedan turned his head slowly.

Very slowly.

Ariaxa had never seen someone regret their life choices so fast.

The guard swallowed. “Th-The Triarchs demand immediate audience.”

Silence.

Cold, lethal, world-ending silence.

Kaedan’s jaw clenched. The room darkened with the drop of his aura.

The guard stepped back, trembling.

Kaedan didn’t move. Didn’t release Ariaxa’s hand.

His forehead rested against hers, his breath slow and ragged, trying to hold onto the moment that had just been stolen from them.

Ariaxa whispered, voice barely a breath, “Kaedan…”

He squeezed her fingers once — a promise, a warning, a surrender.

Then he rose, every muscle tight with fury he was barely containing.

The guard flinched as Kaedan passed by him.

Just before he left the room, he cast one last look at Ariaxa — a look filled with need, fear, and the kind of determination that cracked empires in half.

And then he was gone.
