Grace’s POV
I stand before the bedroom mirror in the black lace lingerie Cole chose, turning slowly to see myself from every angle, hardly recognizing the woman staring back.
Delicate straps cross my back in an intricate pattern that took me five minutes to figure out, cups that barely contain my breasts and seem designed more to display than support.
And panties cut high on my hips that make my legs look longer than they are. I've never worn anything this daring, not even on my honeymoon when I thought I was being adventurous with a simple silk nightgown.
"Grace?"
I spin so fast I nearly trip, my hand flying to my chest instinctively. Ryan stands in the doorway, frozen like someone pressed pause on him mid-step.
His eyes travel my body with an intensity I haven't seen since before the accident—dark, hungry, and completely alive. Not the dead stare of recent months but something raw and immediate.
"I was just trying on something new," I stammer, reaching for my robe on the bed. "I didn't expect you home yet. Your meeting…"
"Don't." His voice comes out rough, almost unrecognizable. "Don't cover up. Please."
The please stops me more than the command. Ryan hasn't said please about anything involving my body in so long, I'd forgotten what it sounded like.
He approaches slowly, like approaching a spooked animal that might bolt, each step deliberate and measured.
His hand rises toward me but hovers near my thigh, trembling slightly before finally making contact—just fingertips tracing the lace edge with reverence that makes my breath catch.
"You're beautiful," he breathes, his fingers following the line of lace up my hip. "God, Grace, you're absolutely glowing lately. There's something different about you. You seem... happier."
"I'm happy because you kissed me yesterday," I say carefully, watching his face for signs of retreat. "Because this arrangement is helping you too, right? You seem more like yourself again."
Ryan's jaw tightens, a muscle jumping beneath the skin. "When I watch Cole touch you, when I see the way he worships you like you're something precious, something happens to me I don't fully understand."
His hand slides higher, suddenly gripping my thigh with possessive force. "I want to remind you that I'm still your husband. That I can give you things in the way he'll never be able to. That you belonged to me first."
"Ryan, you don't have to prove…"
"Don't I?"
His other hand comes up to cup my breast through the delicate lace, thumb brushing over my nipple with deliberate intent.
"He bought this for you, didn't he? Picked it out, imagining you wearing it for him. But you're wearing it in our bedroom, our house. While you're still my wife."
"It's like he awakened something competitive in me," he’s backing me slowly against the wall, his body caging mine. "He doesn't even know he's playing a game, but I want to win. I need to show you that I can be what you need too."
He pushes me fully against the wall and crashes his mouth to mine with a desperation I've never felt from him.
Not his usual efficient pecks or even the tender kisses of our early years, but something consuming and almost angry.
His tongue claims my mouth like he's trying to erase the taste of Cole, like he's rewriting territory that's been ceded.
"Ryan—" I gasp when he finally lets me breathe.
"I've been watching you with him," he says against my throat, words hot and damp on my skin.
"Studying what makes you respond, what makes you cry out, what makes you forget everything except feeling good. I've been taking notes, Grace. Learning."
Without warning, he drops to his knees—something he's done maybe twice in six years of marriage, and never with this kind of intent.
His hands grip my hips, holding me against the wall as his mouth finds me through the delicate lace, tongue working the fabric until it's soaked through and I'm gasping.
"Is this what you like?" he asks, looking up at me with dark eyes. "Is this what Cole does that makes you scream his name?"
"Ryan, please…"
"Please what? Please stop? Or please don't stop?" He pulls the panties aside roughly, not removing them but shoving them out of his way. "Tell me, Grace. Tell me what you want from your husband."
Then his mouth is on me directly, using his tongue like Cole taught him by example, like he's been taking mental notes during our performance.
But there's something different in Ryan's approach—more desperate, more to prove, more possessive. He's not trying to worship me; he's trying to claim me.
"Oh god, Ryan, that's…" I can't finish the sentence because he adds his fingers, curling them inside me while his tongue circles with newfound skill.
"Better than him?" he asks against my sensitive flesh. "Tell me I'm better than him."
"Different," I gasp out honestly. "You're different."
He growls against me, doubling his efforts until my knees threaten to buckle. He stands suddenly, spinning me to face the wall, and I hear his belt buckle hit the floor.
When he enters me, hard, ready, desperately wanting, I cry out in shock at the force of it.
"You're my wife," he says against my ear, hips driving forward with raw intensity. "You've been my wife for six years. I know I failed you, I know I pulled away, but I'm still here. I'm still your husband."
"I know," I moan, pushing back against him, meeting his thrusts with equal desperation.
"I'll learn to be everything you need," one hand tangled in my hair while the other grips my hip hard enough to bruise. "I'll study, I'll practice, I'll become whatever you want. But you're mine, Grace. Even when he's inside you, you're still mine."
The possessiveness in his voice, the competitive edge mixing with genuine emotion, sends me over the edge.
I come harder than I have with him in years, maybe ever, my body clenching around him as waves of pleasure crash through me.
"That's it," he groans, following me over. "Remember this. Remember your husband can still make you come apart."
After, we stand against the wall breathing hard, his weight still pressing me forward, neither of us quite ready to separate and face what just happened.
"I love you," he says quietly, and for the first time in months, it doesn't sound like obligation.
"I love you too," I reply, and mean it, even as I know it doesn't solve anything. Love was never our problem. Everything else was.
He finally pulls away, and we both adjust our clothes in silence that feels heavy with unspoken questions. Ryan looks at the lingerie I'm still wearing, Cole's gift that became Ryan's catalyst.
"Keep it on," he says, surprising me. "Wear it to dinner. Let Cole see what he bought you, and let him wonder what we did while he was gone."
There's something dark in his smile that I've never seen before. My husband is changing, evolving, becoming someone new in response to this arrangement. I just don't know yet if that's salvation or disaster.
