Grace’s POV

Late afternoon sunlight streams through the kitchen windows, stripes across the floor where Cole has me pressed against the counter, kissing me with the slow deliberation.

Ryan's doctor's appointment gives us this rare gift of privacy in our own house, no need to hide or hurry or hold back the sounds that want to escape.

"We have at least an hour," I breathe against his mouth between kisses that taste like the coffee we shared this morning. "Maybe more if traffic's bad."

"Not enough."

Cole lifts me onto the counter with easy strength, stepping between my thighs with the confidence of someone who knows exactly where he belongs.

"It's never enough, Grace. I could have you for a lifetime and still want more."

His hands slide under my shirt with possessive familiarity, palms warm against skin that responds to him like a flower turning toward sun.

I arch into his touch, letting myself feel this fully—not the usual stolen moments or guilty fumbling but real intimacy…

The kind where we can take our time, where I can moan his name without checking the volume, where we can pretend this is our real life instead of borrowed time.

"I love how you respond to me."

Cole murmurs against my throat, his stubble scraping deliciously against sensitive skin. "Like your body was made for mine. Like we were meant to find each other, even if the timing's all wrong."

"The timing's always been wrong. From the moment we met at my wedding, remember?"

My fingers tangling in his hair to hold him closer.

"You shook my hand and I felt electricity shoot straight through me, and I thought, 'This is Ryan's best friend, I can't feel this way about Ryan's best friend.'"

"I had to leave the reception early."

Cole confesses, his lips finding that spot behind my ear that makes me shiver.

"Couldn't watch you dance with him, couldn't see you smile at him like he was your whole world when I wanted—God, I wanted things I had no right to want."

The front door slams with enough force to rattle the pictures on the wall.

I jerk back so fast I nearly fall off the counter. "Ryan's home."

I try to pull away, to put appropriate distance between us, but Cole holds me firm, his hands deliberately gripping my ass with a possession that makes my pulse spike for entirely different reasons.

"Cole! Grace! Where are you?"

Ryan's voice carries from the entryway, pitched high with excitement I haven't heard in months, maybe years.

"Come to the living room. I have incredible news!"

"What are you doing?" I whisper frantically, trying to extract myself from Cole's grip as Ryan's footsteps approach the kitchen, each one counting down to disaster. "Let me go, he'll see!"

Cole's face has turned to stone, but his eyes burn with exhaustion so complete it looks like defeat—tired of hiding what we are, tired of being the secret that lives in the margins of my marriage.

He releases me at the very last possible second, stepping back just as Ryan appears in the doorway, face flushed with whatever news has him practically vibrating with joy.

"There you are! Come sit. This is important."

We follow him to the living room like condemned prisoners walking to execution, each step heavy with dread.

Ryan takes his usual chair across from the couch where Cole and I sit, careful distance between us now, the space of propriety and denial that we've perfected over months of practice.

Ryan's practically glowing, radiating happiness like a small sun. "The doctor ran tests. Comprehensive ones, more detailed than the initial assessment after the accident."

He pauses for effect, barely containing his joy, like a child with the best Christmas present. "My fertility has returned. Full viable sperm count. Complete motility. I can father children."

My lungs forget how to work, chest tight with panic. Beside me, Cole goes completely rigid, his hands slowly curling into fists against his thighs, knuckles white with the effort of not reacting.

"That's... wonderful," I manage, though my voice sounds far away to my own ears, like someone else speaking from the bottom of a well.

Inside, my mind screams: No, no, no. Not now. Not when we finally admitted we love each other. Not when we were starting to imagine a real future.

"The doctor said it happens more often than people think. Trauma, stress, then recovery."

Ryan continues, oblivious to the devastation he's causing with each word.

"The body has amazing healing capabilities. The initial infertility was likely stress-induced from the accident, and as I've healed psychologically, my body has healed physically."

He leans forward eagerly, eyes bright with possibility. "And here's the thing—he said recovery is gradual, not instant. Which means it's been building back over weeks, maybe months. Which means..."

"You think the baby's yours.” Cole's voice comes out strangled, forced through a throat that's probably closing with the same panic I feel.

"I think it could be either of ours."

Ryan's smile is radiant, completely guileless, the smile of someone who has no idea he's destroying lives with his joy.

"Isn't that incredible? We went into this thinking I could never give Grace children, and now there's a chance I already have. The arrangement worked even better than we imagined."

My hand drifts unconsciously to my stomach. To the child I've built dreams around with Cole, whispered plans in darkness about houses with yards and Sunday pancakes and a life where we don't have to hide.

"According to our contract, if any party wishes to terminate the arrangement, all relationships return to their original state immediately. So I'm invoking."

Cole makes a sound like he's been punched in the solar plexus, all air leaving him at once.

I can't even manage that much, frozen in place like if I don't move, time might stop, might reverse, might give us back the hour we had before Ryan walked through that door.

"Don't look so serious!" Ryan laughs, the sound jarring in the heavy atmosphere. "The arrangement served its purpose perfectly. Cole, you gave us exactly what we needed. You're a true friend. The best friend anyone could ask for."

Friend. The word is a knife between my ribs, twisting with surgical precision. Ryan has no idea what Cole has become to me.

"We'll do a paternity test after the baby's born, of course. But honestly? It doesn't matter to me."

Ryan says casually, like discussing weather plans.

"This child will be ours regardless of biology. And now that we know I'm capable, we can try for more—the traditional way. Build the family we always planned."

He reaches for my hand across the coffee table, and I let him take it because my body is on autopilot while my heart shatters into pieces too small to ever reassemble.

His fingers are warm, familiar, the hands that have held mine for six years, and they feel like shackles.

"Cole, you're welcome to stay until you find a place," Ryan adds magnanimously. "No rush at all. We're family, the three of us. That doesn't change just because the physical arrangement is ending."

I want to scream that everything changes, that Cole isn't just the man who "helped out," that I love him with every cell in my body, every breath in my lungs, every beat of my breaking heart.

But Ryan's face radiates such genuine happiness, such innocent belief that we've all just been playing roles in his recovery story.

"Right," Cole says, his voice hollow as an empty house. "Just helping out."

I look at Cole and see my own question reflected in his devastated eyes: Whose child is this? Why, after months of careful lies and justified deceptions, do we suddenly feel like the villains in this story?

And what are we supposed to do now?
