“Whoa whoa,” Viktor said.
Viktor waved his hand in the space between me and Jake in an attempt to get our attention. I swiped at the angry tears that streaked down my face and the snot that beaded on my lip. I was a teary hot mess. Jake had vengeance in his eyes and I could tell from the way they flashed that he was already blaming Jade. This vendetta he has with the witches is starting to get old. I get that he doesn’t trust them and I get that she hurt me. I even understand where he would be irritated with her, pissed even for placing me here. But she is not to blame for any loss.
How could Jade have known that I was pregnant? It wasn’t even her responsibility to train me that day. Clara wasn’t there that morning and she would have done the same thing if not worse to me had she been present. She only did what she was supposed to do, which was to train me. Neither Jake nor I could be angry at the witches for this. They were not the ones who were to blame. If they were to point fingers at anyone it should be me. The fault was with me. I was the one who was to blame for all of this. Not only had I not even known that I was pregnant but I had literally been drinking just a few days ago.
“ENOUGH!” Viktor yelled. Jake and I jumped in our seats and turned our attention to a very upset Viktor. “Before we go jumping to conclusions, things get out of hand, and we do something stupid, let’s think. Let’s establish the truth first. Let’s not assume,” Viktor said. His tone was calm and I could tell he was trying to convince himself more than Jake and I. “We need to make sure that you…. I’ll link the pack doctor to come and check.”
I gulped at his words and my heartbeat quickened. His eyes glossed over and my vision blurred as frustration leaked from my eyes. My throat tightened and I fought the urge to inhale like a mad woman out of air. A warm firm hand wrapped around my own and I blinked the tears away. I locked eyes with Jake and despite the way we had left things he was here. I didn’t want to think about a baby but a small part of me hoped.
“Doc will be here as soon as possible. He said he’ll need twenty to thirty minutes,” Viktor said.
“That’s okay, we aren’t going anywhere,” Jake murmured.
“Speaking of going places,” I started, “Where did you go?” I asked.
“What?” Jake asked.
“The night that we argued. Where did you go?”
“I… I went for drinks,” Jake said. I didn’t miss the way he avoided eye contact.
“With who?” I asked.
“With the boys,” Jake said way too quickly. His eyes darted to Viktor.
“At midnight?” I asked.
“Do you think anyone would turn down the Beta?” Jake asked.
He released my hand and sat back in his seat. When I first came here I was inexperienced. I hadn’t really dated and I never had any time to go out and meet people. So having a boyfriend was never an option. Viktor was my first everything. Jake was my second. Even with my inexperience I could tell something was up. Something wasn’t right. The way that he was being dodgy was evidence of that. I may have zero experience outside of the them but I wasn’t stupid.
“Where did you go? Who were you with?” I asked.
“Some of the betas,” Jake answered.
“And Viktor?” I asked.
“What about him?” Jake asked. He turned his chin to look at Viktor, his eyes locking on him.
“He went after you that night,” I answered.
“He did?” Jake asked.
This time it was Viktor who leaned back in his seat slightly. The way he gulped audibly was almost painful as he avoided eye contact. From Jake’s reaction it was obvious that the two of them weren’t together. Not only that, it was clear that they never met up that night. All of a sudden I felt like a detective. The clues weren’t adding up and I wasn’t going to stop until I got to the bottom of this. For a moment, nobody says a word. It isn’t until Viktor looks back up and stares into my eyes before he looks at Jake.
“Yes,” I said firmly as I leaned forward in my seat, “he did.”
“I did,” Viktor said. “What am I missing?” I asked.
The two of them looked at me and no one answered. I didn’t like the silence that stretched between us. I hated feeling like once again they were leaving me in the dark. I hated that I felt lonely even thought I was sitting here with them.
“So help me Goddess, if you two don’t start talking I will kick you out of this room,” I swore.
“It’s as Jake said,” Viktor started but I didn’t let him continue. Viktor looked at Jake and he returned his gaze. Their eyes glazed and I wanted to slap them. I wanted to slap them across the face. They were linking each other without me, in front of me. I bit into my lip until I tasted blood. In this very moment, I hated them.
“Don’t you dare lie to me, Vik. Don’t you dare,” I said angrily. My voice came out in a choked whisper. The fog over their eyes cleared and they both looked at each other before they turned to me.
“It’s as I said,” Jake repeated and continued on when Viktor didn’t. “I was drinking with a few of the deltas. It got late and we passed out.”
“I never talked to Jake that night,” Viktor said. “As much as I wanted to, I didn’t get the chance.”
“So what did you do?” I asked.
“I ran,” Viktor said.
