185 Another day

Ch. 185 / 206 Jan 27, 2026

Kacie

“What about her?” I asked.

Even as I asked the question all of my fears came together and piece by piece it was clear. Still I hoped that Clara would have something to say, to refute my fears. I knew though, as I stared into her eery light blue eyes filled with worry, that my fears had come true.

“She left in the middle of the night and never came back. At the time I told myself that she was probably at a guys house or playing around…” Clara said.

“What does that….”

Clara ran her fingers through her hair and her earrings swayed left and right. She looked at

“But now?” I whispered.

“But now…” Clara whispered.

“Where is she?” Viktor asked.

“I don’t know… but wherever she is I know she can handle herself,” Clara said. She looked to me. “I’ll fight with you.”

“And Nyx?” I asked.

“I know she will too,” Clara said.

As if she had been summoned, Nyx appeared in the doorway behind Clara. Her red hair was a wild fury of a mess, her gold bangles firmly in place despite looking like she’d just woken up. Her milky eyes looked back and forth between Viktor and I. Her power would be helpful in the event that we lost. I didn’t think it would happen but it felt reassuring knowing Nyx was on our side.

“Give us five,” Nyx said.

“I can give you two. Our people are dying by the second,” Viktor said.

Nyx looked at him, she studied his expression, and bowed her head before she turned from the door. Clara closed the door and Viktor and I stared at each other while we waited. He took a deep breath and grabbed my hand.

“I need for you not to fight me on this,” Viktor said.

“You ask too much of me. You can’t expect me to sit on my ass, my love. I can’t-I won’t. I’m not being stubborn but I’m not backing down on this. Either we march into battle together or I’ll come by myself. You already know what I can do. I’ll be an asset and less lives will be lost. We don’t know how long it will take but every minute, every warrior counts. Me included,” I said.

Viktor’s grip on my hand tightened but I kept my chin raised. My mate sighed and released my hand. He took three steps away from me and I stayed where I stood, staring after him. He needed a few minutes and I would give him that. He needed to understand that I was going to battle whether he liked it or not. The only thing he got to decide is whether I went with him or alone.

“You’ve always been good to me, Vik, and I love that about you. But I’m not someone beneath you that you need to take care of twenty-four-seven. I am your mate, your partner, and your Luna. I don’t need you to coddle me,” I said.

“But—”

“I know. I’m carrying, but that doesn’t mean I’m weak. I’ll protect our child. I won’t let anyone get close. Please don’t fight me on this,” I said.

“I can see it in your eyes,” Viktor sighed.

“What?” I asked.

“That you’ve made up your mind and there’s nothing I can do to convince you otherwise. Goddess, you’re frustrating sometimes, you know that, right?” Viktor asked.

I smiled.

“I love you,” I breathed.

“I love you too,” Viktor said.

“I’ll feel better knowing that I’ll have your back,” I said.

“I don’t need anyone watching my back. I’ve got that covered. It’s you that I have to worry about,” Viktor grumbled.

“You don’t need to worry about me. I control fire, remember? I dare anyone to try and touch me,” I said.

“What if she is working for them?” Viktor asked.

“Who? Jade?” I asked. Viktor nodded. “If doesn’t matter.”

“She defeated you,” Viktor said.

“We have Clara and Jade. She won’t win again them. Jade was the next level after Clara. The strongest of the three isn’t Jade… it’s Nyx. If it comes down to Jade… Nyx will be our only hope,” I whispered.

“Goddess… this is what I mean,” Viktor said in annoyance.

The door creaked open, interrupting our conversation. I turned to find Clara and Nyx had changed and were ready for war. They must have tried to match with me. I wore a long-sleeve black thigh-length t-shirt over black shorts and black shoes. Clara wore a black dress that hugged at her curves and her earrings glowed yellow and orange like flames. Nyx wore a black sweetheart neck velvet dress with loose flounce sleeves. The dress fell mid-thigh and her red hair had been tied up in two puffs atop her head. She matched the ensemble with black boot.

“Let’s go,” I said.

“I’ve been needing an outlet,” Clara said.

I nodded as she passed by me. The elders couldn’t have chosen a worse time to attack. Nyx stopped by me and I looked up at her as her hand dropped on my shoulder. She squeezed it and I nodded at her. Her hand dropped and she continued forward. Viktor stared at me and I quickly caught up to him.

Stay close.

Yes, my love.

The three of us followed Viktor toward the north border. The sun was high in the sky, the dark shadows Viktor and I had passed on our way to the witches quarters were long gone, and the world had awakened. Together, the four of us, headed toward where the elders wrecked havoc on our people. We would face them head on, we would rid our lands of the plague that visited us in the form of our elders, we would kill our enemy. We would be able to move on from this day, this fight, this war together. I would right my wrongs when victory was ours. As a warm breeze blew against me I promised I wouldn’t let any of the enemy live to see another day.
