Mate Me in Moonlight

Chapter 76

Ch. 76 / 150 May 06, 2026

POV: Adeline

The healing quarters had never felt so small.

Elara worked through the night, her hands steady despite her own recent wounds, power flowing from her into Aiden's broken body with the kind of focused intensity I recognized from my own desperate attempt to save her. Other healers moved around her—younger wolves with minor gifts, fetching supplies, monitoring vital signs, doing what they could to support the lead healer.

I didn't move.

I sat in the corner where they had finally allowed me to stay after I refused to leave for the fifth time. My eyes never left Aiden's face—too pale against the dark furs they had laid him on, too still beneath the blankets covering wounds I couldn't bear to look at.

The bond hummed faintly between us. That was the only thing keeping me sane. The thread was weak, wavering, but it was there. He was still there.

"The pack needs you," Luca said at some point during the long night. He stood in the doorway, his expression caught between respect and frustration. "There are decisions that need to be made. Patrols to organize. The wolves need to see—"

"No."

"Adeline—"

"I said no." I met his eyes, and whatever he saw in mine made him step back. "I am not leaving him. If the pack needs leadership, you give it. You're the Beta. That's your job."

"It's your job too. You're—"

"I'm staying with my mate." The word fell between us, heavier than I had intended. I had never claimed Aiden publicly before, never used that word where others could hear.

But I couldn't bring myself to care about propriety. Not with him lying there. Not with the bond so fragile I could feel it straining with every shallow breath he took.

Luca was quiet for a long moment. Then he nodded once and withdrew.

The hours crawled past.

Elara finished her work as the first gray light of dawn crept through the windows. She sat back, exhaustion carved into every line of her face, and turned to me with carefully measured hope.

"I've done what I can. The wounds are closed. The bleeding has stopped. But he lost so much..." She hesitated. "He needs to find his way back on his own. I can't make him want to stay."

"He'll stay." My voice came out raw, scraped hollow by hours of silent terror. "He has to."

"The bond." Elara moved to sit beside me, her hand finding my shoulder. "It's the only thing keeping him anchored right now. I can feel it—the thread connecting you. As long as that holds, he has a reason to fight back."

"What do I do?"

"Keep him anchored. Use the bond. Pour yourself through it—your presence, your will, everything that makes you you. Let him feel that someone is waiting on this side."

I nodded and turned back to Aiden.

The chair creaked as I pulled it closer to his bedside. I took his hand—carefully, so carefully, afraid of disturbing the fragile healing—and closed my eyes.

Aiden.

I reached through the bond with everything I had. Not the desperate surge of the night before, not the frantic grab for his strength. This was different. Slower. More deliberate.

I'm here. I'm not leaving. Do you hear me? I'm right here.

The bond pulsed weakly in response.

You don't get to leave me. You don't get to decide that this is where your story ends. Not after everything. Not after what we've built.

I pressed his hand against my cheek, feeling the calluses against my skin, the warmth that was still there despite everything.

I spent so long running. Running from the bond, from the possibility of love, from everything that might hurt me. And then you—you stubborn, patient, infuriating man—you made me stop running. You made me want to stay.

Tears were falling now. I couldn't stop them, didn't try.

So you don't get to run now. You don't get to slip away while I'm sitting here holding your hand. You stay. You fight. You come back to me.

The bond trembled.

I didn't fight this hard to lose you. I didn't tear through those wolves and feel my heart stop when I saw you fall just to sit here and watch you fade. You stay with me, Aiden Hale. You promised you wouldn't leave me. You promised.

Something shifted in the bond.

A stirring. A response. Faint, so faint I might have imagined it—but there.

That's right. That's right, I felt that. Keep fighting. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere.

I stayed like that through the morning, pouring myself through the bond in a constant stream of presence and love and stubborn refusal to let him go. The pack moved around the edges of my awareness—battles outside, decisions being made, wolves looking to Luca for guidance I should have been giving.

I didn't care.

Nothing mattered except the hand in mine and the thread connecting us and the desperate hope that somewhere in the darkness, he could feel me waiting.

The sun reached its peak. Began its descent.

And then—

His hand twitched.

I froze, not daring to breathe, not daring to hope.

His fingers curled. Found mine. Held.

"Aiden?" My voice cracked. "Aiden, can you hear me?"

Nothing. Then—

A squeeze. Weak. Deliberate.

The tears I had been holding back broke free. I pressed my forehead against our joined hands and sobbed with relief, with exhaustion, with the overwhelming tide of love I had been suppressing for fear of never getting to express it.

Outside, dawn was approaching again. A new day. A new chance.

He would wake. He would live.

The bond told me so.

And for the first time since the horns had first sounded, I allowed myself to believe we might survive this after all.
